Russia starts restricting some calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, Interfax says
Meta and Telegram did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
President Vladimir Putin last month signed a law authorising the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Russia strives to reduce its dependence on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
Russia has long sought to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services. Its push to replace foreign tech platforms became more urgent as some Western companies pulled out of the Russian market after Moscow launched full-scale war in Ukraine.
"In order to counteract criminals... measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messengers," Interfax quoted Roskomnadzor as saying. "No other restrictions have been imposed on their functionality."
Roskomnadzor said that the owners of both Telegram and WhatsApp had ignored repeated requests to take measures to stop their platforms being used for activities such as extortion and terrorism. - REUTERS

Trump says he thinks Putin will make a deal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump said on Thursday he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a deal and that threats of sanctions against Russia probably played a role in Moscow seeking a meeting. Trump in an interview on Fox News radio also said he has three locations in mind for a follow-up meeting with Putin and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Business couple pleads not guilty to RM3.6 million false claim charges

KOTA KINABALU: A husband-and-wife business duo have claimed trial to charges of abetting a company director in submitting false claims amounting to more than RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR). Anita Mohamed, 54, and Ang Ka Fat @ Kenny, 57, pleaded not guilty to their respective charges when brought before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga on Thursday. Both face two separate charges each, as well as one joint charge, over the alleged offences. The charges were framed under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 18 of the same Act, and punishable under Section 24(2). Upon conviction, the provision carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine of at least five times the value of the false particulars, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The documents were allegedly submitted to an administrative assistant at the DIDR office between 2022 and 2023.
