Inquest details how Jay Slater died after month search
Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was visiting the Spanish island of Tenerife and had been to the NRG music festival with friends at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas on 16 June last year when he went missing.
After the event, he had gone with two men to an Airbnb in Masca, a village in the mountains miles from his holiday apartment in Los Cristianos, before deciding that he wanted to go home.
The 19-year-old had later told his friends he was 'in the middle of the mountains' and in need of a drink, as he attempted a 14-hour walk home the morning after taking drugs and alcohol on a night out, Preston Coroner's Court has heard.
The teenager made contact with his friends several times on his phone before it ran out of battery, but failed to identify where he was in the mountains.
What ensued after Mr Slater failed to return to Los Cristianos was a nearly month-long search for the teenager. It would take 29 days to find his body.
On 15 July, his body was found above a dry stream bed. After his bag was found with his passport some 15 to 20 metres above him, it was presumed he had fallen.
The Spanish authorities said they believed Mr Slater could have veered off the road and into the dangerous ravine after seeing the sea and believing he could reach a beach to get help.
Concluding a two-day inquest into his death, Dr James Adeley, senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen, said: 'Jay fell at a particularly dangerous area in difficult terrain.
'He fell approximately 20 to 25 metres, suffering skull fractures and brain trauma from which he would have died instantaneously. Jay Dean Slater died an accidental death.
'This is a tragic death of a young man.'
Dr Adeley said the evidence showed there was no one else involved in the death and no evidence to suggest Mr Slater had been threatened, assaulted, was under duress or in fear for his safety.
The coroner told Mr Slater's family sat in court that he hoped the 'examination of facts rather than conjecture' during the hearing had been some consolation to them.
Mr Slater's tearful mother, Debbie Duncan, had earlier given a tribute to her son at the hearing on Friday.
'He was very loved and our hearts are broken,' Ms Duncan said: 'Our lives will never be the same without Jay in it.'

As they swam, the siblings were reportedly swept by the current and separated by a hundred metres, Civil Protection sources told DiariTots21. Their dad reportedly made a desperate attempt to save them and had to be rescued himself after nearly drowning. Three local cops had heroically jumped into the sea to rescue the family, with Chief Inspector Jose Luis Gargallo telling reporters that the sea was rough and a yellow flag had been raised. One of the officers, identified only by his first name and the initial of his surname as Younes A, said: 'A hotel worker was trying to get one of the three out of the sea when we arrived. 'We were told when we helped get that person out that another two people were in the sea who could be minors. 'We tried to locate them, saw bits of clothes and seconds later were able to locate and get a young girl out of the water and began resuscitation and another police force was the one responsible for getting the other child out of the sea. 'When the emergency services arrived they took over the efforts to save them until they said they couldn't do anything more. 'We don't know the circumstances leading up to them getting into difficulties. 'I leapt into the water with two other colleagues to get the father to safety first before going back to rescue one of the children.' "We did everything possible, we put the father in a safe area, we also took the minor and performed resuscitation on him, but without success." He added that CPR continued to be performed until emergency services arrived. Gargallo explained how the couple had five children, and while the dad and two of the children were out swimming, the mum stayed at the hotel with the other three. Salou Town Hall carried out a minute's silence just before midday local time today following the tragedy. Authorities said the deaths marked the 15th and 16th fatalities on Catalan beaches since June 15. The number "already exceeds by five those registered in the same period last summer". THIS is the moment a road rage row erupts after a furious motorist denies hitting a car in an alleged crash. James, the owner of the black BMW, proceeds to claim that the damage on his motor matches with the mark left on the Nissan. He points toward the black paint on the Nissan arguing: "That's consistent with the damage on my car". Shocked locals watched as both drivers started shouting at each other in the middle of the road. The footage then switches to James alleging that "this gentleman here has just threatened to kill me". The driver of the Nissan then goads James, continuing to deny that any damage had been caused. His wife can be seen in the passenger saying she's on the phone to the police. The Nissan driver continues to argue that James cut him up before pointing and shouting "That's your f***ing problem". James argues he wasn't at fault replying: "It's not a problem mate, it happens." He claims the other driver left the scene of an accident which is why he followed him. "He came right up in my face and was punching his fist into his hand, then goading me trying to get me to hit him," James told the Mail. "I stood calmly and said I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction - from the word go his was lit, so aggressive." James added that when he asked the driver for his insurance details, he refused saying "I don't see why I should". More people started to appear on the street to see what happened before the "aggressor" left the scene. James claims he notified the police online but they said they weren't going to attend because nobody was injured. "I posted a link of the video on the Nextdoor app to see if anyone local knew of him and a woman called Caroline mentioned she had run in with him previously," James added. The Sun has contacted Sussex Police for comment.
