Fake Labubu dolls seized after Trading Standards warning

Glasgow Timesa day ago
The viral plush toys – quirky fang-toothed 'monster elf' figures made popular by Chinese toymaker Pop Mart – have become a global collector's craze. This popularity has fuelled a surge in fakes, many being sold by third-party sellers via online marketplaces and local shops that are breaking the law.
Trading Standards teams have seized thousands of unsafe counterfeit Labubu dolls in recent weeks. In just one month, over 2,000 were confiscated from 13 retailers in North Tyneside, with further seizures in Greater Manchester, Humberside, North Somerset, and Scotland. Many of these items were discovered after tip-offs from concerned parents.
Counterfeit or fake Labubu dolls are poorly made and unsafe. Many contain small, detachable parts such as eyes, hands, and feet, which present a serious choking hazard to young children. Loose stitching and exposed stuffing further increase the risk of suffocation.
These fakes often breach the UK's Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, lacking CE or UKCA safety markings, importer details, and required safety warnings. Without proper safety checks, they may also contain toxic substances such as lead, harmful dyes, or banned plasticisers.
How to spot a fake Labubu
Genuine Pop Mart Labubu dolls have a distinctive elf-like design and include authenticity features such as a holographic POP MART sticker, a scannable QR code linking to the official Pop Mart website, and - on newer editions - a subtle UV stamp on one foot.
Signs of a fake include overly vibrant colours and an incorrect teeth count, with authentic Labubus having nine. These markers are commonly missing or poorly replicated on counterfeit versions.
Kerry Nicol, External Affairs Manager at The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), says: 'These dolls are fast becoming the latest must have craze, which is being amplified by social media influencers promoting and showcasing 'unboxing' of the products on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Supply and demand means that legitimate Labubu dolls are almost impossible to find.
'Parents understandably want to be able to get their hands on these toys for their children and rightly expect the toys they buy to be safe, but dangerous counterfeits are finding their way into the market, often being sold by third-party sellers on online marketplaces and from shops on the high street that have no regard for the safety of their customers.
'These fake products bypass the rigorous safety checks and compliance requirements the law demands, meaning they could contain choking hazards, toxic materials, or faulty components that put children at serious risk.
"Everyone involved in the supply chain – from manufacturers and fulfilment houses to sellers and marketplaces should have a role to play in ensuring unsafe toys never reach the hands of children.'

What to do if you think you have bought a fake Labubu
Inspect packaging carefully – check for a UKCA or CE mark, and make sure the product lists a UK-based importer or manufacturer. Warnings and usage instructions should be present. Look for authenticity markers – genuine Pop Mart Labubu dolls feature a holographic sticker, a scannable QR code linking to the official Pop Mart website, and (on newer editions) a UV stamp on one foot. Check the product's appearance – overly vibrant colours, poor stitching, or the wrong number of teeth (authentic Labubus have nine) are signs of a fake. Be cautious of 'bargains' – counterfeit toys are often cheaper but may carry serious safety risks, including choking hazards and toxic materials. Buy from reputable retailers and avoid unfamiliar online vendors or third-party sellers on online marketplaces listings.

Christine Heemskerk, CTSI Lead Officer for Product Safety, says: "Fake dolls are poorly made in unsafe manufacturing premises.. Counterfeiters do not follow safety standards and are unlikely to have good factory controls in place.
"A fake Labubu doll might contain hazardous chemicals in the plastic which can cause lifetime damage to a child's organs. Small parts such as eyes could easily detach.posing a serious choking hazard for small children. Beware of putting your child at risk by buying cheap unsafe fakes."
Jerry Burnie, Head of Toy Safety at British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA), adds: 'Counterfeit toys are a significant risk as they are unlikely to meet the strict toy safety standards required of the legitimate toy maker.
"When shopping for branded items we would always recommend researching the toy brand and try to buy from the company directly or through a reputable retailer who you can easily return the product to.
"If you are buying online, particularly through an online marketplace, then include the name of the toy company in the search and compare the listing against the toy company's own website.'
The risk for shops and online sellers selling fake Labubus
With the Labubu craze showing no signs of slowing, businesses and collectors alike must stay informed and protected.
Laura Court-Jones, Small Business editor at Bionic, says: 'The rise in counterfeit Labubu figures doesn't just affect collectors, it's a serious risk to businesses as well.
'Stocking or selling fakes, even unintentionally, can damage customer trust and hurt your brand reputation. That's why it's crucial to source responsibly and consider insurance to help protect against damage or theft due to insured events."
How to insure your Labubu amid a rise in theft cases
With Labubu figures flying off shelves and becoming increasingly rare, a rise in theft has followed.
Originally designed as quirky handbag accessories, they've now become so coveted that a TikTok trend jokes about people handing over their entire bag to a thief, but keeping the Labubu.

Children's video game branded ‘perfect place for paedophiles'

A video game played by millions of children in the UK is the 'perfect place for paedophiles' and 'fails to implement basic safety controls', a US state lawsuit has claimed. Roblox has become a 'breeding ground for sex predators' where child abusers 'thrive, unite, hunt and victimise our kids', according to Liz Murrill, the Republican attorney general of Louisiana. The lawsuit alleged that 'far from creating a safe place for children' Roblox, which has an age rating of seven in the UK, had 'provided a perfect place for paedophiles' that 'lacks safety features to protect children from predators and lacks warnings for parents and child users'. The video game, which is played by an estimated 61pc of British children aged between eight and 14, allows children to build virtual worlds and customised games that they can share with others. It has more than 380 million players globally and is one of the world's most popular video games among children, allowing children under the age of 13. It has almost 5 million players in the UK alone. However Roblox – which can be played on consoles, PCs and smartphones – has long faced claims that abusers have targeted the game to attempt to contact children. According to the lawsuit, for many years most of Roblox's parental controls within the game were off by default, even when the account was linked to a child. Child users could easily chat to others with no parental oversight and potentially be directed away from the game onto other messaging apps. Its settings allowed adults to 'easily communicate with children ... creating a virtual world where predators can freely target and groom children', the lawsuit claimed. Children were also able to access games with adult themes, according to a report by an investment firm last year. These included user-generated games such as 'Escape to Epstein Island'. Roblox, which was founded in 2004 and is now valued at more than $80bn (£59bn), tightened up many of its parental settings in November last year after a series of reports detailed instances of predators targeting children in the game. Children under the age of 13 now need parental permission to access most of its messaging features and parents can add screen time limits or monitor friend lists. The Louisiana lawsuit alleged that, in July, a man suspected of possessing child-abuse material was arrested while 'actively using' Roblox and a 'voice-alerting technology designed to mimic the voice of a young female'. A Roblox spokesman said: 'We can't comment on pending litigation. But we dedicate substantial resources, including advanced technology and 24/7 human moderation, to help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behaviour, including attempts to direct users off platform, where safety standards and moderation may be less stringent than ours. 'While no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented rigorous technology and enforcement safeguards, including restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing. The safety of our community is a top priority.' In July, Roblox added additional age verification checks in the UK in response to the Online Safety Act. These require users to undergo an age estimation check to access additional online chat features.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers baffling 'censorship' update stops you killing bosses

A strange update has been released for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers which stops players from killing historical figures, sparking a wave of negative reviews on Steam. Between Black Myth: Wukong and the upcoming Phantom Blade Zero, there's an ungoing wave of Chinese-developed Soulslike games at the moment, all mimicking FromSoftware's single-player formula. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, developed by Leenzee, is the most recent example. Set during China's Ming dynasty, the action role-player blends its historical setting with supernatural elements, as protagonist Bai Wuchang contends with a mysterious disease turning people into monsters. In a bizarre turn of events, the historical aspects of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers have become a controversial sticking point, after an update made alterations to the story and stopped certain historical characters from being killed. In the game's version 1.5 update, the developers delivered a comprehensive list of bug updates and alterations. While it all seemed relatively innocuous on the surface, one line raised some alarm bells. 'Added dialogs for some NPCs to complete some plots,' read the patch notes. 'We will further optimise the exhaustion animations in the future to improve the plot performance.' While 'plot performance' sounds like an awkward translation hiccup, players who downloaded the update discovered that this line actually refers to a dramatic change whereby you no longer 'kill' certain bosses and other enemies who are based on historical figures. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. LOL WUCHANG patch notes say they "optimized the exhaustion animation for certain NPCs" and what they mean is they made it so you can no longer kill any historically significant bosses or NPCs, and instead they just get "exhausted" and relax after the fight and talk to you LMAO — Lance McDonald (@manfightdragon) August 13, 2025 One of the most difficult and epic boss fights now ends with the boss no longer dying but instead saying 'it was all just a trial! And actually the path you are on is good! Hahaha!' Holy wow — Lance McDonald (@manfightdragon) August 13, 2025 As highlighted by Lance McDonald on X, certain bosses no longer die after you've defeated them but now collapse in exhaustion. These bosses, like Ming General Liu Cheng'en, have altered dialogue too. 'I won't stop you going forward but the people ahead will attack you like a monster,' the boss now says in his 'exhausted' state. The fight with Zhao Yun has similarly been altered, with players reporting that you no longer fight the actual person but his spirit instead. Before the update, when defeated, Yun dies and says: 'The mortal dream fades, my tale concludes, I understand now, all is as it should be.' However, now his dialogue has been altered to something more trivial: 'Ha, still set on this path? Good! That was the trial's purpose all along! Hahaha!' These changes have impacted other enemies. It's claimed the game's fourth chapter has now become 'insanely easy because 50% of the enemies are now non-hostile to the player and you can't attack them during the rebellion outbreak'. As for the reason behind these changes, McDonald claims this 'censored' update is due to 'pressure from Chinese players who were upset about being able to kill historically significant characters from the end of the Ming Dynasty'. The Ming General no longer dies and now just sits near the shrine and says "I wont stop you going forward but the people ahead will attack you like a monster" — Lance McDonald (@manfightdragon) August 14, 2025 Other players have left a wave of negative reviews on Steam following the update, noting how the alterations go against the plot of the game, as the crux of the story is based around coming to terms with death. More Trending 'Dev single-handed butchered the whole theme of the story by changing plotlines and catering to the idiotic nationalist, who would never touch the game,' one Steam review reads. 'Would not recommend until dev fix this or give global players a way to revert this themselves.' It seems Reddit posts from players complaining about the changes have been deleted from the game's official subreddit too, with one user sharing a screenshot of their deleted post on the 'Soulslike' subreddit. While it's unclear if these changes have been motivated by certain Chinese players or government pressure, the update is clearly something the developers are trying to gloss over.
