Landscape supervisor turned hero: Man helps over 2 dozen people, pets escape apartment fire
The Landscape supervisor was visiting his family at Riverbank Apartments on Wednesday, June 4, when he quickly realized something was wrong.
'I looked to the left and see fire, flames shooting out the building,' said Rainey. 'That's when I went and helped everyone out of their apartment.'

Around 4:45 pm Wednesday, JFRD responded to a fire at Riverbank apartments in Hyde Park.
JFRD said the fire originated in a bedroom inside one of the apartments. The fire quickly spread to the attic, and as a result of that, JFRD told me they told JEA to cut the power off for the entire building. The state fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Without hesitating, Rainey said he ran inside the burning building and began banging on residents' doors, telling them it was time to go.
'I was trying to kick people's doors in, burglary style, but it wasn't flying open,' said Rainey. 'And the doors that I didn't get opened, kicked in, it was people actually in those apartments, too.'

Rainey tells me he helped get 15 people and 3 dogs out of the burning building, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
'I was knocking on their door. It wouldn't open; I opened the door. She was sitting in the living room. Her husband was trying to get her out. And I just grabbed him. I said 'Move, man. I got her, I got her,' said Rainey. 'I grabbed her and rolled her out. And that's how she got out there.'
I asked Rainey why he decided to run into that building. He said it was instinct.
'I just care about people. I was just helping everybody. I couldn't leave them in there. The building was shooting fire, like real big flames,' said Rainey.
Rainey told me everyone he helped was extremely grateful to him, and he was just happy that everyone was safe. The Red Cross said it assisted a total of 34 individuals displaced by this fire. In addition, there are also other people displaced.

'I had never been in a place with a fire before,' said Riverbank apartment resident Ekira Jackson.
Jackson was on her way back home from work on Wednesday when she got a call telling her apartment building was on fire and she needed to evacuate.
'When I walked up, I just see this black apartment complex,' said Jackson. 'I just moved in literally I haven't been here for not even a month yet. And everything I work hard for is ruined.'
I spoke with Riverbank Apartment's Property Manager about what they are doing to help residents during this time.
They told me everyone who was impacted by the fire can access their units, but they need to obtain an access pass through the city, which they have available if residents contact them.

WNBA issues statement about arena safety in regards to sex toys being thrown during games
The WNBA issued a statement Friday about the sex toys have been thrown in arenas and onto the court at games over the past two weeks. 'The safety of everyone in our arenas remains a top priority," a WNBA spokesperson said in a statement. One made it to the court and play had to be stopped. A second individual was also arrested for one of the incidents at a different WNBA game. The Crypto group spokesperson stated that the two individuals arrested were not part of the group. Terri Jackson, the executive director of the WNBAPA, also released a statement on behalf of the players' union regarding the situation. 'Upon our request for an update, the league advised the players' union that it was investigating claims that individuals were being incentivized to carry out these unsafe stunts,' Jackson said.

51 attorneys general launch effort to crack down on robocalls
Fifty-one attorneys general have joined a multistate effort called Operation Robocall Roundup, led by the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force. The task force aims to end illegal robocalls, which are automated telephone calls that deliver a pre-recorded message. This practice has come under scrutiny as robocalls are increasingly frequent, especially in small cities. 'These telecom companies are knowingly allowing scam robocalls to be routed through their networks,' said Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes in a statement. 'They've ignored basic federal requirements, and by doing so, they are enabling fraudsters to reach Arizonans' phones. That stops now. My office will not tolerate companies that profit off robocalls while putting our residents at risk.' The 51 attorneys general sent warning letters to 37 different voice providers directing them to comply with federal law and stop illegal robocalls from being routed through their networks. According to the statement, the voice providers failed to respond to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) traceback requests, register in the FCC's Robocall Mitigation Database or submit a legally required mitigation plan to combat robocalls. The letters warn that the attorneys general are authorized to enact federal law and state law enforcement actions. Thus, the providers must respond within 21 days with a plan on how to comply with the laws. 'North Carolinians are getting bombarded with millions of invasive robocalls every day, and these communication companies are not following the rules to protect us,' said North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson in a statement. 'We are giving these companies three weeks to start following the rules so we can shield people from these annoying and illegal robocalls.' The Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force was created in 2022 and is led by Attorney General Jackson, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. According to Jackson, North Carolina has received, on average, 149.8 robocalls per person in 2025. The attorney generals are also notifying 99 companies that 'carry traffic on behalf of those 37 providers.' Furthermore, in a separate statement on August 6, the FCC removed '185 non-compliant voice service providers from the Robocall Mitigation Database,' which will ensure that other voice providers cannot route calls from their networks.

Texans' Jimmie Ward behind bars for second time in months due to bail violation
Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward is behind bars again after he reportedly violated a condition of his $30,000 bond, which stems from his felony assault arrest in June. Ward, 34, was arrested again on Thursday and booked into the Montgomery County Jail, according to online records. It marks his second time behind bars in nearly two months. The NFL player's attorney, Steve Jackson, told KPRC that he was booked after testing positive for alcohol – a violation of his bail conditions. "It's a condition of bond, and there are certain conditions like you can't drink," the attorney explained. "Jimmie believed it was for not getting intoxicated, like he could have a drink. There was no contact with the complainant. The court has a zero tolerance policy for drinking while on bond, unbeknownst to him." Jackson clarified that there were no new allegations leveled against Ward and the no contact order has not been violated. Ward was arrested in Texas on June 12 and charged with assault on a family member by impeding breathing or circulation, which is a third-degree felony. The Texans said in a statement at the time that they are aware of the reports surrounding Ward's arrest and would not comment further as they "gather more information." Jackson previously told People that he believes Ward will be "vindicated" as they continue to investigate the allegations made against him. "We have been aware of the complaining witness for some time and her actions towards Jimmie Ward as well as another high profile sports figure," Jackson told the outlet. "It is sad that professional athletes and public figures have to endure things like this, but has seemingly become commonplace. But we will continue to thoroughly investigate this woman and her history, and believe that Jimmie will be vindicated." Ward spent the majority of his career playing for the San Francisco 49ers. In nine seasons with the organization, he registered seven interceptions and 451 tackles across 106 games. He entered the 2023 offseason as a free agent before signing a two-year, $13 million deal. Ward signed a one-year contract extension worth $10.5 million before the start of last season. In two seasons with the Texans, Ward appeared in 20 games and registered three interceptions and 98 tackles.
