Mohamed Salah reveals Liverpool fear and what 'drives him crazy' - 'I'm not lying'

Yahoo17-05-2025

Mohamed Salah feared there was only a 10% chance of extending his Liverpool contract - as he joked the Reds have a place for Kevin De Bruyne in their squad. Salah ended months of speculation in April when he agreed a new two-year contract having been set to leave on a free transfer in the summer.
The Egyptian hadn't expected the Reds to be open to a new deal given the long-standing trend under owners Fenway Sports Group not to give lucrative contracts to players in their 30s.
However, Salah, who will be 33 this summer, and Virgil van Dijk, who turns 34 before the start of the new campaign, have both thrashed out extensions to their Anfield careers.

And when asked what percentage he thought there was of a new deal 12 months ago, Salah said: "Based on club history, 10%.
"Because we know how the club - I'm not attacking them - just I know how they deal with players over 30 in the past, and I know how the situation will be, so I'd never expect that the club was going to be like 'okay, two years with the money, and all of us are happy'. So I didn't expect that I'm going to stay.
"It's in my head, based on club philosophy, (that) I will not stay. I know how the club works, it's not something that is bad, it's just we see how they deal with a situation like this in the past. So, based on experience, you saw in the past, you just judge a situation."
Salah added: "I think it took like six months for negotiations to start going really quick, and I think from January it's like, okay, now things are getting better and better. So it took a while.
"I think the club was testing me to see if I can still provide or not! I didn't want more that (two years)."
Salah has enjoyed an outstanding season in helping Liverpool become champions, scoring 33 goals and providing 23 assists in all competitions. He was last week named Footballer of the Year, is a front-runner for the PFA Player of the Year award is expected to win the Premier League Golden Boot.
The Egyptian is also among the favourites for the Ballon d'Or having previously never before finished higher than fifth despite racking up the records and trophies while with Liverpool.
"It used to drive me crazy before, but some stuff is not in your hands, so you give up in that direction," said Salah. "But when you go to work, it's in your mind a little bit what you want to achieve this season. So it also drives you to work hard.
"I would love to win it one day, I'm not lying to you. I'm not giving up on it, I would love to win it. If it doesn't happen, I'm don't know what I can do.
"I'm not sure why I haven't won it. But I'm sure there's a good chance of winning it this year."
Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah was also given the opportunity to pay tribute to Kevin De Bruyne, who will leave Manchester City at the end of the season after 10 years among the best players in the Premier League.
"I want to tell him congratulations for your career here, he has done phenomenal at City and was great for the league," he said. "I really wish him the best - and we have a space for him!"

Liverpool deal moves closer as forward offered at OUTRAGEOUS discount

Liverpool's transfer focus is currently on Florian Wirtz. The club are locked in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over the Germany playmaker. Leverkusen are seeking £126m for Wirtz, but Liverpool's efforts are currently some way short of that total. Recent reports suggest the Reds are willing to pay £100m up front and another £13m for the No10 in add-ons, and the fee remains a sticking point. Once Wirtz and Kerkez are safely on board, Liverpool could well move for other targets. The club want a No9 and given the number of alterations expected on the wings we could see a wide man arrive in time. Luis Diaz, Ben Doak and Federico Chiesa could all LEAVE in the summer window, opening a gap for a winger to arrive. Kubo wants to leave Real Sociedad And according to the latest reports, one long-term Liverpool target is about to have his asking price slashed. Advertisement Takefusa Kubo has been on the Reds' radar over several windows. Indeed last summer it was reported that the club were preparing to trigger the forward's €60m Real Sociedad release clause. No deal came to fruition, however, with the 24-year-old and his club going on to have an indifferent season. Imanol Alguacil left his position as head coach, sparking reports that Kubo was among the players to hand in a transfer request. Then it was suggested that the Japan international was of interest to both Liverpool and Arsenal but neither side were prepared to meet his €60m asking price. But now Florian Plettenberg is reporting that Kubo could be available for an OUTRAGEOUS discount in the summer market - and that could bring Liverpool back to the table. Kubo offered at HUGE discount 'Takefusa Kubo is one to watch in the summer transfer window, as he's currently leaning towards a move to the Premier League,' the German transfer reporter stated on X. Advertisement 'The 24y/o winger has already received multiple enquiries. Price valuation: €30-40m. He remains under contract at Real Sociedad until 2029. 7G/4A.' A price of €60m was too rich for Richard Hughes but if Kubo can be acquired for half that, then it would represent strong business. The left-footed right-winger only scored five goals in LaLiga last season but has very good underlying numbers on FOTMOB for chances created, successful dribbles and touches in the opposition box. He is also a willing worker off the ball, earning high marks in the duels won, interceptions, recoveries and possessions won in the final third categories. Kubo is also among the most-fouled players in the Spanish top flight - winning 73 fouls across the season.

Report: Liverpool weigh £30m sale as Brentford and others show interest

Ben Doak and Liverpool's £30m Opportunity: Smart Business or Short-Sighted Sale? Transfer Turbulence Around Young Talent Liverpool's summer activity has been relentless, with deals flowing in and out of the club in rapid succession. The latest transfer spotlight, however, is fixed on 19-year-old Ben Doak, a name that barely registered with the casual fan last summer but now finds himself a £30m-rated target for a trio of Premier League clubs. Advertisement Per the Hounslow Herald, Brentford are keen to add Doak to a growing collection of ex-Liverpool talent, having already secured the signatures of Caoimhin Kelleher, Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho over the past two summers. But they're not alone. Crystal Palace and Brighton have reportedly entered the fray, a development that significantly strengthens Liverpool's hand. Sale May Fund Big-Name Targets Liverpool's motivation is clear. While they've already welcomed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and bid farewell to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kelleher, bigger targets are on the radar. Chief among them is Florian Wirtz. Liverpool to recoup funds to help fund Wirtz and more. With the club still engaged in talks over Milos Kerkez and potentially a striker, Doak's sale could serve a broader strategic purpose. His potential may be considerable, but in a summer of reshaping, even promising youth might be considered expendable to fund marquee arrivals. Market Value and Timing Work in Liverpool's Favour Doak's value, and the timing of this interest, place Liverpool in an advantageous position. Ipswich Town had tried in January, but the Reds didn't want to sell. The mood seems to have shifted, and rightly so. The competition between Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace all but guarantees a fee close to the full £30m. Photo IMAGO Given that Doak's 2024/25 campaign was hampered by injury after a strong loan stint at Middlesbrough, it's a bold valuation—but not unrealistic. There's enough performance data, promise and Premier League readiness to justify it, particularly in a summer when even mid-table clubs have serious money to spend. Development Versus Immediate Value Selling Doak would be another sign that Liverpool are prioritising short-term gains and proven quality over longer-term squad depth and player development. That may be a calculated risk worth taking, but it will only pay off if their reinvestments—particularly in the Wirtz deal—yield immediate returns. Advertisement It's a recurring theme under Fenway Sports Group: buy low, develop smart, and sell high. In this case, it might be more about selling smart and buying elite. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis There's no doubt Ben Doak has something about him. Pacey, direct, and fearless—he looks every inch a player suited to Arne Slot's dynamic football. His performances at Middlesbrough hinted at serious potential, and despite injury setbacks, most Liverpool fans would have liked to see him get a proper run in the first team before decisions are made. That said, £30m is no small change for a player who's still largely unproven at Premier League level. If that money helps secure someone like Florian Wirtz, a generational talent who could redefine Liverpool's attacking play, then it becomes more palatable. But it always stings to see homegrown or carefully scouted youth sold on just before they might explode. Advertisement Brentford, Brighton and Palace are all clubs with smart recruitment and solid coaching. If any of them land Doak, he'll probably thrive. The worry then is hindsight. If he becomes a star elsewhere, fans will question why we didn't show more patience. Still, given the bigger picture and financial pragmatism required to stay competitive in the modern game, this looks like a sale Liverpool can afford to make—but only if they get the rest of their summer business absolutely right.
