Family mourns loss of beloved father in fiery Hollywood crash
The family of a beloved dad and barber is heartbroken after he was killed in a fiery crash on Mother's Day in Hollywood.
Relatives describe Douglas Freeman, 49, father of four, as a man who always found a way to make others smile.
Victim remembered as joyful and loving
"People came to know and love him. It was good knowing him—he was going to make a joke, he was going to make you laugh. He was gonna do anything in his power to put a smile on your face," said Gwendolyn Wright, the victim's niece.
That is how Wright describes her uncle, Douglas Freeman, who died Sunday shortly after 5:30 PM at the intersection of Sheridan Street and North 40th Avenue in Hollywood.
Police said Freeman and another driver crashed and his car burst into flames.
"Immediately it was a shock throughout the family," said Wright.
Wright shared that Freeman, who would've turned 50 in August, was like a brother to her.
His family is devastated by the sudden loss.
"Just to be going through this, it angers me. It's just an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone," said Wright.
Loved for his laughter, dancing and barbering skills
As the investigation into the deadly crash continues, Freeman's family and friends are remembering the vibrant man they said loved to dance and had a passion for cutting hair.
"He was a good person, outgoing, a lot of fun -- never a dull moment with Doug, that's for sure," said Mike Stephens, his former boss.
"It's just sad to know that he is not here," Wright added.
Fiery crash shuts down busy intersection
A video captured by a passing driver showed one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke rising into the air.
A nearby resident said she was in her backyard when she heard the commotion and rushed to see what had happened.
"I was one of the first people to call 911—no one got out of the car," she said. "I heard the fire start. I was like, 'Oh, another crash.' And then I saw a huge fire. There was a tree there. The tree fell down after the fire stopped. There was another car over there, flipped upside down too."
The woman said she frequently sees serious accidents in the neighborhood and hopes the tragedy serves as a wake-up call.
"I just love to see Hollywood become a safer area for people to drive in, because it's very triggering to see," she said.
Investigation ongoing
The Hollywood Police Department's Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is leading the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the crash.

Anti-Abortion Assassin Wore Creepy Latex Mask to Murder Dem
The FBI has released new images of Vance Boelter, the man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband and shooting another, that show the mask he used as part of his ruse. Authorities had previously revealed that Boelter impersonated a police officer during his spree, but new images shared by the FBI on Boelter's wanted poster show that he also wore a latex mask. The images appear to be taken from doorbell or security camera footage. A manhunt is currently underway for Boelter, who is suspected of killing Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. He is also believed to have shot State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. Boelter fled on foot following a shootout with police at the Hortman home. In his abandoned vehicle, authorities found a list of nearly 70 potential targets, including Governor Tim Walz and Rep. Ilhan Omar, as well as abortion providers and advocates. Like Walz and Ohmar, both Hortman and Hoffman are Democrats. Boelter most recently worked as a director of security patrols for Praetorian Guard Security Services, a company that offers 'residential security patrols' by armed and uniformed guards. Boelter's bio on the company's website states that he has been involved in 'security situations' across the world, including in the West Bank, Southern Lebanon, and Gaza. The 57-year-old's bio also states that, 'He brings a great security aspect forged by both many on-the-ground experiences combined with training by both private security firms and by people in the U.S. military.' In 2019, Boelter was appointed to Minnesota's Governor's Workforce Development Board, which advises the governor on the state's workforce, by Walz. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information that could lead to Boelter's arrest and conviction.

Los Angeles curfew to continue for 'couple more days': mayor
A nightly curfew in Los Angeles will continue for "a couple more days," Mayor Karen Bass said Sunday, the ninth day of protests that have seen US President Donald Trump launch a military-backed crackdown. Demonstrators began protesting on June 6 against immigration raids launched by the Trump administration to round up undocumented migrants in the heavily Latino city in Democrat-led California. The rallies have been mostly peaceful and confined to a small area of Downtown Los Angeles, but marred by sporadic and eye-catching violence which Republican Trump has used as a pretext to send in 4,000 National Guard and 700 Marines. The extraordinary deployment came over the protests of local officials who have insisted that the situation was under control. Bass issued an overnight curfew on June 10 on the downtown area at the heart of the protests to stop incidents of vandalism and looting. On Sunday she said she is hoping that the number of people behind the violent incidents "will taper off". "So I know the curfew will be on for at least a couple more days," she said in a televised interview with local news channel KTLA, adding that she cannot predict how many more days exactly. "We don't know how many raids are going to happen, we don't know what the character of the raids will be, and every time that happens it really generates a lot of anger in the city," she said. Trump, seeminly unfazed by the protests, on Sunday directed federal authorities to ramp up their deportation efforts, including in Los Angeles. Bass noted the anger and fear that the raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency have generated in Los Angeles. "People are afraid to leave their homes," she said, adding that raids have at times felt "indiscriminate." "This is the United States. You are not supposed to have to show your papers if you go out in public," she said. "It's hard for me to believe it's targeted." Trump said on social media that ICE agents had been subjected to "violence, harassment and even threats" and ordered them to "do all in their power" to effect mass deportations. Los Angeles was mostly calm on Sunday after a massive rally and march a day earlier -- part of the "No Kings" series of anti-Trump protests across the country -- saw thousands of people turn out to condemn the raids and the military crackdown. A small group of demonstrators marched around City Hall during the sunny afternoon under the watchful eye of law enforcement, including several woman clad in bikinis carrying signs with slogans including "Hot Girl Summer Melt ICE". bur-st/dhw
