British & Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been handed a four-match suspension, which can be reduced to three by completing a coaching intervention, for a foul on Australia first-five Tom Lynagh in the third Test in Sydney, World Rugby said on Monday.
Sheehan is set to be ruled out of his club Leinster's pre-season game with Cardiff and their United Rugby Championship matches against Stormers and Sharks in September and October.
He will also miss the game against Munster on 18 October if he fails to successfully complete the coaching intervention.
Lynagh had failed a head injury assessment and was unable to continue after an apparent hit from Sheehan's elbow, as the Lions suffered their only loss of the nine-match tour of Australia on Saturday.
Sheehan, who had initially denied any foul play, has accepted the suspension given to him by an independent foul play review committee, World Rugby said in a statement.
"In determining foul play, the committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. The committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied," World Rugby added.

Ex-Arsenal player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault

Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old sat in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court dressed in black during the brief hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said that two of the charges Partey faces relate to him allegedly anally raping one complainant during consensual sex on separate occasions. Three further charges relate to a second woman whom Partey is accused of raping on three occasions, twice in Britain and once in Spain. He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on 2 September. His lawyer previously said in a statement that Partey denied the charges and welcomed the opportunity to clear his name. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for Є50 million (NZ$98m) in 2020 and became a key member of the English side's first team, making 52 appearances in all competitions last season. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. His contract with the Premier League club expired last month. British media have reported Partey is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during Wednesday's hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain. - Reuters

New South Wales state politician Gareth Ward was last month found guilty of sexually abusing two young men, aged 18 and 24, between 2013 and 2015. The 44-year-old right-leaning politician has refused to stand down from state parliament, despite sitting in prison while awaiting sentencing for his crimes. State Premier Chris Minns said Ward had "no shame", pledging to move a motion that would expel him from parliament. But Ward has so far stymied these efforts, obtaining a temporary injunction late on Monday that prevented the Labor government from removing him. Leader of the House Ron Hoenig said the government would seek an urgent hearing this week to have the injunction lifted. "The issue is, as you would appreciate, of considerable significance," Hoenig told reporters on Tuesday. "The house needs to be able to make its judgement to protect itself. And we will be seeking a review of the judge's decision." Photo: ABC / Che Chorley Convicted Snowtown murderer James Vlassakis has been granted parole after serving 26 years in jail. Vlassakis was the youngest of the four perpetrators involved in South Australia's (SA) "bodies-in-the-barrels" serial killings between 1992 and 1999. He was also the key prosecution witness against killers John Bunting and Robert Wagner, who are serving life sentences without the prospect of parole. The South Australian Parole Board announced its decision on Tuesday afternoon, but Vlassakis won't be immediately released into the community. Parole Board chair Frances Nelson KC said there is a 60-day period during which the SA Attorney-General, the Commissioner for Victims' Rights and Police Commissioner could appeal. "He would then go to the pre-release centre for up to 12 months," she said. "We've had a look at the legislative criteria and, in our view, he meets the criteria. "We have to look at whether or not he presents a risk to the community and in our assessment he does not. His institutional behaviour has been excellent." SA Parole Board Chair Frances Nelson KC said she thinks Vlassakis is 'genuinely remorseful' and that his 'institutional behaviour has been excellent'. Photo: ABC News Ms Nelson said she believed Vlassakis was "genuinely remorseful". "Don't forget he has done it hard in prison, because he gave evidence against Bunting and Wagner," she said. She said while she understood while families and victims opposed his release, it was not the role of the parole board to decide on punishment. "Many victims have the view that someone hasn't really got a long enough sentence and they shouldn't be released, but that isn't a matter that should even feature for the parole board - it would usurp the function of the courts," she said. "The court does not have to set out a non-parole period but they did in his case, and they set a much reduced non-parole period for reasons which are set out in the sentencing remarks." Ms Nelson outlined strict restrictions which Vlassakis would be required to adhere to. "There will be some geographic exclusion zones which the victims have requested, there would be condition that he's not to contact any of the victims - not that I think for a moment that he would, but that does give them some reassurance," she said. "He would [also] have to obey the rules of the pre-release centre which includes a curfew." In May 1999, SA Police discovered the decomposing remains of several victims in six plastic barrels hidden in an old bank vault at Snowtown. Nearly all the murder victims were friends or family of the perpetrators. Vlassakis, whose image remains suppressed and who is now aged in his mid-40s, was 19 when he committed the crimes and was found guilty of being involved in four of the murders. He was jailed for life, but because he had helped authorities, he was given a 26-year non-parole period. Co-accused Bunting and Wagner were jailed for 11 and 10 murders respectively, as well as accomplice Mark Ray Haydon, who was released into the community last year after serving a 25-year sentence. Nelson said last year that neither Bunting nor Wagner had shown any contrition for their crimes, and she added that they were "obviously very unpleasant people".
