The University of Baghdad in Iraq will establish a college dedicated to artificial intelligence, according to a ministerial order issued on Monday. It comes as countries throughout the Middle East seek to become major players in the booming AI sector, which is at the centre of unprecedented investment and interest. Naeem Al Aboudi, Iraq's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said the decision to have a specific college at the University of Baghdad dedicated to AI was part of a larger 'strategic vision to develop the Iraqi academic system and keep pace with global digital and knowledge transformations'. According to the news release, the AI-focused portion of the University will begin in the upcoming academic year, and will focus on AI as it applies to 'engineering, biomedical applications and big data'. Estimates indicate that between 60,000 and 70,000 students are enrolled in the University of Baghdad. In common with other countries in the Middle East, Iraq sees AI as an opportunity to diversify its economy away from oil. Experts warn, however, that AI could disrupt labour in the short term. Emphasising AI in universities is seen as a way to blunt the impact of labour disruption, helping to prepare students for a new economy. The University of Baghdad is not alone in its endeavour to formally incorporate AI into higher education. In 2019, before AI was dominating headlines, the UAE announced plans to establish of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world's first higher learning institution dedicated to AI. MBZUAI opened the following year. AI projects and programmes throughout the Middle East have helped to place a greater emphasis on the inclusion of Arabic and other cultural aspects that might have otherwise been left out of the technology development, which initially focused on English and Western data.

UAE announces academic calendar for universities with more flexible end-of-term holidays
The UAE has announced the new academic calendar for all public and private higher education institutions for the academic year 2025-2026 on Wednesday, July 23. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) introduced key changes to end-of-term holidays to create a more flexible and consistent academic calendar across UAE-based universities. The announcement comes after the UAE Ministry of Education released a new structure for the academic calendar for schools starting from 2025–2026. Under the new structure, the university academic year will start on August 25, 2025, with major holidays aligning with the school calendar. These include a four-week winter break from December 8, 2025, to January 4, 2026, with classes resuming on January 5, 2026, as well as a two-week spring break from March 16 to 29, 2026, with classes resuming on March 30, 2026. The academic year will end on July 3, 2025, offering a clearer and more balanced schedule that supports students' learning and wellbeing. All UAE-based higher education institutions have been mandated to follow a unified academic year start and end date, with exceptions for international universities aligned with their home calendars. The mandate also allows flexibility in determining the start date of the academic year in line with the requirements of academic programmes and specialisations at higher education institutions, as well as flexibility in setting the end date of the academic year based on the timing of the summer semesters. This also allows for flexibility to adjust the holiday dates by up to one week before or after the specified dates, provided the holiday duration remains unchanged. Aligned with the 'Year of Community' objectives, the structure aims to foster family cohesion and support students through a balanced distribution of study and break periods.

Russian scientists develop first 3D-printed laryngeal implant to accelerate cancer recovery
Russian scientists from the National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) have developed a method for the production of individual thyroid cartilage implants of the larynx. They are printed on a 3D bioprinter, taking into account the anatomical features of the patient, in order to surgically replace the lost area of the throat. Scientists already have a prototype of the product. According to the research team, the proposed technology is economically feasible and allows for the mass production of a medical product. Hyaline cartilage, which provides smooth sliding of the articular surfaces of the larynx, serves crucial protective and structural functions, supporting surrounding organs, preventing airway collapse, and acting as an anchor point for muscles and ligaments. However, in case of damage, it does not recover well due to the absence of blood vessels and the slow division of regenerative cells. Cancer patients often face this problem in the treatment of cancer, especially in the third or fourth stages, when the tumour grows into the larynx and the thyroid cartilage is removed. Laryngeal cancer is one of the most common cancers of the head and neck area. To address this, the scientists suggested printing a thermoplastic polyurethane mesh with subsequent thermoforming for a specific patient. To allow cells to attach to the surface of the mesh, scientists suggest coating it with collagen or applying a biocompatible polyelectrolyte complex of chitosan and polyglutamic acid, widely used in regenerative medicine.
