Russians pay last respects to ballet maestro Grigorovich

Russians paid their last respects to dance legend Yuri Grigorovich on Friday at the Bolshoi Theatre where he reigned for decades as artistic director of one of the world's most famous ballet companies. Grigorovich, considered one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century, died on Monday at the age of 98. Leading figures from the Russian arts world gathered inside the gilded auditorium of the Bolshoi to pay tribute to him. Grigorovich's coffin was placed in front of the stage, where a giant photograph of the puckish, white-haired ballet master was displayed. Hundreds of Muscovites, many carrying flowers, were waiting outside the theatre in central Moscow. They applauded as his casket was carried down the steps, accompanied by a portrait of Grigorovich and three huge floral wreaths. Participants of a memorial ceremony carry a portrait of Russian ballet choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, who died at the age of 98, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, May 23, 2025. REUTERS/Evgenia Novozhenina "I really loved him. He was a genius... so I could not miss this farewell," said pensioner Alexandra Tretyakova. Grigorovich was famed for productions of Spartacus, Ivan the Terrible, Romeo and Juliet and many other ballets that were staged in Russia and around the world. He was especially noted for male roles requiring extraordinary strength and technique. Ballerina Lyubov Filippova told Reuters that the late choreographer was a "colossus" and an idol. "This person will always remain with us, in our hearts, in our lives. And we should continue to learn from his ballets," she said. —Reuters

Mission: Impossible

A daring finale that divides Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt returns for one last mission in 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' delivering a spectacle brimming with adrenaline-pumping stunts and high-stakes action. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this installment aims to conclude the franchise with grandeur, featuring Cruise performing audacious feats like hanging from an airplane and leaping off an aircraft carrier. Early reactions highlight the film's exhilarating action sequences, with some scenes that are indeed exhilarating adrenaline rush. However, the film's sprawling narrative and extended runtime have drawn criticism for pacing issues and a convoluted plot. The editing is crisp though at times the action scenes look monotonous. 'The Final Reckoning' is one of the easiest 'Mission Impossible' films in terms of plot (and somewhat action). But sadly, little predictable, the eighth part sees Ethan Hunt on the chase for the drowned Russian submarine, Sevastopol, which contains the source code for a dangerous the Artificial Intelligence programme known as the Entity. If Hunt and his team do not get the source code and destroy it, Entity will cause a nuclear war and end mankind. Complicating matters is Gabriel (Esai Morales), a former acolyte of the Entity who wants the source code to control the programme. And thus, the dashing agent, as usual is out there alone, with his trusted team, saving the world yet again. While the MI films have never been ensembles and always had a Hunt-centric plot, this time, the script does rob some of the supporting players of a chance to shine. The ensemble cast, including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg, adds depth and camaraderie, reflecting the franchise's emphasis on teamwork. Yet, some viewers feel the film's ambition overshadows character development, leaving emotional arcs underexplored. 'The Final Reckoning' offers a thrilling conclusion with its high-octane action and Cruise's unwavering commitment to performing his own stunts. While it may not satisfy all narrative expectations, it stands as a testament to the franchise's legacy of pushing cinematic boundaries. Rating – ***Genre- Triller Starring – Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames

Russian ballet master Yuri Grigorovich dies

MOSCOW: Russian ballet maestro Yuri Grigorovich, considered one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century, has died at the age of 98, the Bolshoi Theatre said on Monday. Grigorovich, artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow from 1964-1995, was famed for productions of Spartacus, Ivan the Terrible, Romeo and Juliet and many other ballets. Valery Gergiev, head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, told Izvestia newspaper he was "a legendary figure who will continue to command respect and admiration for decades to come". The Bolshoi said in a statement that it would "faithfully cherish his memory and protect his priceless legacy". Grigorovich was born in 1927, a decade after the Bolshevik Revolution, and performed as a soloist with Leningrad's Kirov ballet before becoming a choreographer. During his long tenure at the Bolshoi, it staged frequent international tours and enhanced its reputation as one of the world's great ballet companies. But the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union brought uncertainty, financial worries, internal rows and a flight of talent abroad. In 1995, Grigorovich resigned after months of conflict with management over performers' contracts, triggering the first dancers' strike at the Bolshoi in its more than 200-year history. As the lights dimmed at the start of a scheduled performance, a dancer stepped through the curtain to tell the stunned audience there would be no show that night. Grigorovich created a new ballet company in Krasnodar, southern Russia, although he eventually returned to the Bolshoi in 2008 to work again as a choreographer and ballet master. — Reuters
