Cabinet yet to receive official memo on US ambassador pick, says Fahmi
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said that in such matters, it is standard procedure for the Cabinet to receive a formal memorandum from the Foreign Ministry on any new ambassadorial or diplomatic appointment to Malaysia.
"As of now, the matter has not been brought to the Cabinet's attention. It may be presented once we receive further updates, but at this point, it has yet to reach the Cabinet,' he told reporters after presenting appointment letters to the founding board members of the Malaysian Media Council on Tuesday (July 15).
Asked whether Malaysia has the right to reject Adams' appointment, Fahmi pointed to diplomatic norms.
"In diplomacy, there is a concept known as 'agrément', where the host country must first accept the nominee. The same applies in reverse - when Malaysia appoints its envoys abroad, approval from the host nation is also required,' he explained.
International media previously reported that US President Donald Trump had nominated Nick Adams, an Australian-born conservative political commentator who is now a US citizen, to serve as US Ambassador to Malaysia.
The nomination has sparked debate, with former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin stating that Malaysia has every right to reject Adams' appointment, citing Article 4 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which stipulates that a receiving state may refuse any diplomatic envoy without having to justify.
Under diplomatic protocol, no country may send an ambassador without the host nation's prior consent, which is a key principle in international relations.- Bernama

Malaysia reaffirms diplomatic approach to maritime border dispute with Indonesia
JAKARTA: Malaysia has consistently pursued a diplomatic and legal approach in addressing maritime border disputes with Indonesia, particularly in the Sulawesi Sea, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Speaking at a dialogue with the Association of Malaysian Indonesian Journalists (ISWAMI) and Indonesian media editors, Anwar emphasised Malaysia's adherence to international law and peaceful negotiations. 'We follow the legal path. We do not take an aggressive stance. Both sides must avoid encroaching into each other's territory,' he said. Anwar is currently in Indonesia on a working visit, accompanied by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to facilitate discussions on East Malaysian matters. The Sulawesi Sea dispute, involving overlapping claims between East Kalimantan (Indonesia) and southeastern Sabah (Malaysia), dates back to 1979 when Malaysia published its maritime boundaries map. Tensions escalated in 2005, leading to the formation of ISWAMI, a bilateral media initiative aimed at fostering constructive dialogue on sensitive issues. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry maintains that the ND6 and ND7 oil exploration blocks in the Sulawesi Sea fall within its sovereign territory under international law. This stance is supported by the 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on related territorial disputes. – Bernama

JENDELA Phase 2 starts September with hybrid telecom approach
KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of Malaysia's National Digital Network (JENDELA) will start in September, adopting a hybrid approach to speed up nationwide connectivity, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. Nearly 3,000 sites will be upgraded under Phase 2, moving away from traditional tower construction. 'We are considering hybrid solutions, like 30-metre monopoles, instead of full-sized towers where feasible. This will accelerate deployment,' Fahmi said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The minister was responding to Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng, who raised concerns over poor 4G and 5G coverage in rural schools. Fahmi confirmed that 4G coverage in Julau's populated areas has reached 58.28 per cent, with 43 new telecom towers and 44 upgraded transmitter stations completed as of June 30. Fibre-optic access has also been extended to 1,391 premises. However, 5G rollout in Julau is still under review, with priority given to urban and industrial zones. 'Rural areas, including Julau, will receive 5G in stages based on infrastructure readiness,' he added. Sarawak's SMART 600 initiative is complementing federal efforts, with 29 new towers already operational and 15 under construction. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has partnered with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to boost connectivity in the state. Additionally, 12 Point of Presence (PoP) broadband hubs in Julau now offer high-speed internet, with 1,225 subscription ports supporting speeds up to 1Gbps. – Bernama
