
Bradford healthy diet courses focus on South Asian communities
"Our South Asian diet is a high-carb diet and actually high sugar as well," says Shanaz Begum."People struggle to eat healthily and to know what healthy eating is."That chapati, how much sugar has it got? You wouldn't think it's got that much sugar in it, but it actually has."Ms Begum is a former NHS employee who gives up some of her free time to volunteer at sessions on healthy eating and weight management in Bradford.She helps to run a free 12-week course, funded by Bradford Council, focusing on South Asian communities.Course organisers say those communities face particular challenges when it comes to their health, diet and lifestyle.
At today's session, those attending sit and chat enthusiastically as they discuss the merits - or otherwise - of various cooking oils.Participants learn about the nutritional values of a range of foods, from South Asian staples to traditional breakfast cereals, as well as sharing recipes and cooking ideas.Each session ends with 10 minutes of exercise.Sampada Maheshwari, project lead, says: "South Asians tend to gather their fat around the visceral organs, around the waist, so their BMI [Body Mass Index] is slightly different."The festivals, eating patterns, cooking styles and traditional foods are different, so it is very important to focus on that population."
BMI is used by the NHS to assess whether people are a healthy weight and is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in metres.For white people, a BMI of 25 or higher is classed as overweight, but for people from black or Asian backgrounds, this figure is 23.That means people of the same height and weight can be classed as "healthy" if they are white, but they can be considered "overweight" if they are black or Asian.According to the NHS, this is because "people from an Asian, Black African, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern ethnic background have a higher chance of developing health problems at a lower BMI".Dietician Nusrat Kausar, based in Bradford, says her home city provides its own challenges when it comes to staying healthy."In Bradford, there are a lot of takeaways," she says, with a rueful smile."We have a lot of food shops, streets and streets of desserts, fried food."So, a lot of the environment doesn't make it easy to eat healthily."
Bimla Devi, who has recently started attending the sessions in Bradford along with her daughter and a friend, says there were good reasons for getting involved."In the past, I was pre-diabetic," she explains."I've gained weight again and had to go to the doctors. That's how I found out about this."Ms Devi says she thought the free sessions in Bradford were "new and different" compared to other weight-loss programmes."So, I thought I'd give it a go and, hopefully, it'll help my health and help my daughter and my friend as well."
Meanwhile, fellow participant Gurdev Kaur says the course will "definitely" make her and her family healthier."It makes you more aware," she says."You look at the labels, you talk about exercise, you talk about well-being and you just learn from each other so much. "As a Sikh, your life journey is to learn things every day."Ms Begum says the courses taking place in Bradford are all about "sharing"."People are sharing their journeys, their recipes, what changes they're making and people are adapting it to their lifestyles as well. That is really powerful."This kind of group, it motivates people. I've seen the difference, I've learned from others, which has been brilliant, actually."

Common prescription drug prevents heart attack and stroke WITHOUT deadly risk, scientists discover
A COMMON prescription drug has been linked to lower rates of heart attack and stroke - with no increased risk of major bleeding, say scientists. Low-dose aspirin is recommended by the NHS to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who are at high risk of them. 1 Because aspirin helps to stop your blood from clotting, it can sometimes make you bleed more easily. For example, you may get nosebleeds and bruise more easily, and if you cut yourself, the bleeding may take longer than normal to stop. Now, a study published by The BMJ supports the use of P2Y12 therapy instead of aspirin for long term prevention. Giving the anti-clotting drug to patients with coronary artery disease was associated with lower rates of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke compared with traditional aspirin, with no increased risk of major bleeding. P2Y12 inhibitors are usually given to patients alongside aspirin after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) - a procedure to widen or unblock a coronary artery to help prevent cardiovascular events. After several months, patients are usually switched from dual therapy (both drugs) to lifelong aspirin, but some trials have suggested a P2Y12 inhibitor may be more effective for long term prevention than aspirin. So in the new study, researchers analysed individual patient data from five randomised clinical trials involving 16,117 patients who were assigned to either a P2Y12 inhibitor or aspirin after completing dual therapy. When they were followed up four years later, P2Y12 inhibitor therapy was associated with a 23 per cent lower risk of an outcome that combined cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke, compared with aspirin - with no significance different in major bleeding. When considering outcomes individually, P2Y12 inhibitor therapy reduced heart attacks and stroke compared with aspirin. The researchers said: "Overall, this study supports preferential P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy prescription over aspirin due to reductions in major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events without increasing major bleeding in the medium term." Women vs. Men Heart Attack Symptoms But, they note "medium term efficacy does not necessarily extend lifelong, which is the duration we advise patients to continue these medications". To prevent heart attacks and strokes in patients with coronary artery disease, it's crucial to make lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a balanced diet. Smoking significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, so quitting is recommended. People should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week and choose a diet low in saturated and trans fats, high in fibre, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in salt. If you drink alcohol, you should do so in moderation. And practice relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or yoga, and find healthy ways to copy with stress. Seeing your doctor regularly for screenings and to monitor your heart health. And making sure you get enough sleep (seven to nine hours per night) is important. Various symptoms and warning signs can indicate heart disease, and being aware of them can help in early detection and treatment...

There were a few tears – Wales forward David Brooks expecting first child
David Brooks cried tears of joy after being told he is to become a dad – something the Wales forward feared might not happen following his 2021 cancer diagnosis. Brooks, who was diagnosed with stage-two Hodgkin lymphoma nearly four years ago, and wife Flora are expecting their first child on November 1. The 27-year-old Bournemouth player announced he was cancer-free in May 2022, but the long-term effects of the disease in terms of fathering children were unclear. 'Obviously when I was diagnosed you have those conversations and there were never any guarantees that I would be able to have children in the future,' said Brooks, who has linked up with the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifying double header against Liechtenstein and Belgium. 'There was a chance it wouldn't have been possible and I was really lucky that it came naturally. After my treatment things went back to normal so, of course, I was really happy. 'We were trying so it wasn't a massive shock, but there were a few tears. 'We always wanted kids at some point, but the situation kind of took it out of hands a little bit. 'So it's obviously very nice for everything to come naturally and progress into being a family. 'We're really looking forward to it, even though she is going through everything that comes with being pregnant.' Brooks was the Wales hero in their last World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia in March. His equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time secured a precious 1-1 draw, making it four points from the opening two qualifiers and extending Craig Bellamy's unbeaten start as Dragons manager to eight games. 'I think it instils a little bit of fear into who we are playing,' said Brooks. 'They know we are not going to give up, even if it's the 96th minute. It's a massive positive. 'If felt like a big goal in North Macedonia and it makes the table looks a lot better for us. I feel like we are on a good journey.' Brooks says he is now in the 'old box' at 27 with the Wales squad having changed so much in recent years.
