BBC 'regrets' not pulling live coverage of Bob Vylan's Glastonbury controversial set

Yahoo8 hours ago

BBC representatives have expressed regret over failing to pull the livestream of Bob Vylan's controversial Glastonbury performance.
The punk-rap duo sparked controversy on Saturday afternoon when they led the crowd at the West Holts stage in chanting "death, death to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces)".
BBC, the broadcast partner of Glastonbury, aired the performance live, and executives for the corporation admitted on Monday that they should have pulled the livestream over the "deeply offensive" remarks.
"The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence," they said in a statement. "The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves.
"The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.
"In light of this weekend, we will look at our guidance around live events so we can be sure teams are clear on when it is acceptable to keep output on air."
At the time, BBC staff issued an on-screen warning during the performance and didn't make the set available on demand.
Their statement echoes sentiments made by Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis, who said that Bob Vylan's chants "very much crossed a line" and there was "no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence".
The duo's lead singer, Bobby Vylan, defended his on-stage remarks on Instagram on Sunday alongside the caption, "I said what I said."
"Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place," he wrote. "Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organizing online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered."
According to Variety and Deadline, the band has been dropped by its agency, UTA, over the scandal.

Prince William cuts ties with donor allegedly selling royal access

The UK's Prince William has reportedly dropped a donor to his annual charity polo match who was allegedly peddling access to him and his wife, Princess of Wales Kate Middleton. The Royal Charity Polo Cup tournament cut ties with millionaire Minerva Mondejar Steiner after The Times of London reported Sunday that the art gallery owner was soliciting thousands of dollars in donations for her own philanthropic foundation, allegedly using an audience with the Prince and Princess of Wales as bait. By Monday, Mondejar Steiner's name was excised from the invitation-only, millionaire guest list for next month's match in Windsor, People reported, and the Mondejar Gallery was no longer a sponsor. Tournament organizers were unaware of the foundation and had no ties to it, People said. The annual polo event raises money for causes close to the royal couple's hearts from attendees' typically generous donations as they watch the prince play polo. Mondejar Steiner, originally on the guest list, allegedly added a side hustle to that with a 'strictly private and confidential' invitation to wealthy people belonging to the luxury concierge service A Small World, The Times reported. She told them donations to her own philanthropic foundation would get them into the polo event and a possible meeting with William. One patron could join for 6,000 pounds, or a little over $8,000, according to an email obtained by The Times. A 20,000-pound gift to the Mondejar Foundation would net said donor 'full access plus a private audience with Prince William and Princess Catherine,' according to a screenshot the newspaper posted. Separately, her team also dangled a William meeting before potential advertisers willing to pay 50,000 pounds, or nearly $69,000, for a two-page spread in a magazine that would be given out at the tournament. That price also included two 'VVIP tickets' to the event and 'access to the royals,' The Times reported. Event details are normally kept under wraps until it is over, with Kensington Palace reporting the prince's participation after the fact, along with the amounts raised and the charities supported. Last year's event, the 13th time William has played, raised 13 million pounds, or nearly $18 million, for 11 charities, the palace said in July 2024. _____

Trump admin revokes visas for punk duo that chanted 'death to IDF' at Glastonbury Festival

English rap-punk duo Bob Vylan's U.S. tour appears to be over before it even started. On Monday, the Trump administration announced it had revoked visas for the group's members, following a controversial performance at the Glastonbury Festival in England over the weekend. In a statement posted to X, State Department Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau said lead singer Bobby Vylan and drummer Bobbie Vylan, both of whom perform under pseudonyms, had been banned from entering the U.S. due to 'their hateful tirade at Glastonbury.' 'Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,' Landau added. The State Department's decision came after the group's appearance at the popular music festival on Saturday sparked intense backlash. During their performance, which was livestreamed on the BBC, Bobby Vylan led the crowds in chants of 'free, free Palestine' and 'death, death to the IDF,' referring to the Israel Defense Forces. Behind the duo, a screen displayed the messages 'Free Palestine" and 'United Nations have called it a genocide. The BBC calls it a 'conflict,'' referring to Israel's ongoing war in Gaza. The BBC has since said it should have cut away from the broadcast, writing in a statement issued on Monday: 'The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.' In statement on Instagram, organizers of Glastonbury — England's largest festival — said they were 'appalled' by the duo's performance: 'Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.' According to the group's website, Bob Vylan was scheduled to kick off the 'grandson North America Tour' in October, with almost 20 shows already planned in cities across the U.S. But without visas, that tour will likely be canceled. On Sunday, Bobby Vylan addressed the controversy in a lengthy post on Instagram saying, 'I said what I said.' The artist wrote that he had been 'inundated with messages of both support and hatred.' 'Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place,' he wrote. 'As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us.'
