KREDL floats tender for BESS in Pavagada Solar Park

The Hindu31-05-2025
The Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) is planning to set up a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 250 megawatt (MW)/1100 MwH capacity along with a solar photovoltaic project of 250 MW capacity in Ryapte in Tumakuru district in the vicinity of Pavagada Solar Park.
This is the first BESS being set up in the solar park spread over 13,000 acres. It is being set up to supply peak power and optimise grid utilisation. This new project will come up in 1,000 acres in Annadanapura and Reddivarahalli villages in Tumakuru.
KREDL, which has called for the tender, will provide the land on lease to the developer for setting up the plant. The entire project will be developed under Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding on Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis.
'The BESS is being set up as we want to utilise the energy generated during solar hours in non-solar hours and thereby optimise grid utilisation,' said Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department. He further said that BESS, which is fairly a new concept, is being set up in different capacities at different projects.
The developer will also need to set up a transmission network with the primary objective of supplying Solar and BESS power to electricity supply companies (escoms). The projects need to be designed for interconnection with the Karnataka Solar Power Development Corporation Limited (KSPDCL) 220 kV lines.
'The BESS needs to be utilised for storing the energy generation from Solar PV during the grid constraint period, which may occur anytime during the solar generation hours, and it is mostly expected between the time blocks of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on a daily basis. Further, the grid constraint period would differ on a month-to-month basis or seasonally (not necessarily between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on daily basis),' the tender document specifies.
The energy generated from the solar project which would not be evacuated from the plant on account of grid constraint (partial or full) shall be stored into the BESS. During partial evacuation of energy, it shall be injected into both the grid and the BESS parallely. In a year, at least 80% of gross generation of the solar plant should be stored in the BESS.
Earlier this year, Energy Minister K.J. George had said that while work is on to increase the generation capacity of the Pavagada Solar Park by another 2,000 MW, BESS of around 2,000 MW also will be set up for proper utilisation of solar power.

Solar stocks set to shine from policy tailwinds, says Nuvama; Waaree Energies top pick

The June quarter performance (Q1FY26) of solar module manufacturers Waaree Energies and Premier Energies, indicated that both companies experienced significant growth with a favourable outlook for the future, said Nuvama Institutional Equities, in their analysis. The EBITDA of Waaree Energies and Premier Energies jumped by 81% and 53% year-over-year, driven by strong demand and improved operational efficiencies; the EBITDA margins increased by 633 basis points and 849 basis points year-over-year, according to Nuvama. According to the brokerage, Waaree Energies' integration both backward and forward will help mitigate earnings concentration risks. The inverter manufacturing facility is expected to commence operations by Q4FY26E, while the G H2 electrolyser plant, advanced lithium-ion cell production, and BESS capabilities are projected to begin in FY27E, allowing the company to tap into what the brokerage predicts could be an immense growth opportunity over several decades. Premier holds a positive outlook on the growth potential of the solar sector in India, driven by increasing demand, supportive government regulations, and advancements in technology. Premier Energies intends to concentrate on the domestic market as the ALMM for cells is implemented starting June 2026. Nuvama has assigned a 'Buy' rating to Waaree Energies, indicating its belief in the company's future growth plans and financial stability. Conversely, Nuvama has not issued a rating for Premier Energies, although the company's strategic growth and operational enhancements remain noteworthy. Premier's emphasis on expanding within the domestic market aligns with its overall goal of improving its market presence. According to the brokerage, if a 25% tariff is imposed on US imports from India, Waaree Energies could potentially negotiate a pass-through for certain contracts; however, it may have to make compromises for others to strengthen its long-term business relationships, resulting in a mixed outcome. Waaree Energies has made export shipments to the US in Q1FY26, which will be recorded as revenue upon delivery. The management at Premier Energies is optimistic about a consistent rise in DCR demand, supported by initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the PM KUSUM Scheme, and the CPSU scheme. With the current rate at 15GW annually, it is expected that demand will grow to between 40 and 45GW each year by FY27, as the entire market transitions to a DCR market following the implementation of ALMM on cells from June 2026. Over the next decade, according to BNEF, demand is projected to reach 125GW. The management intends to capitalise on this industry trend as rooftop solar continues to gain significant traction and open access demand increases. Karnataka hits 80 per cent renewable power mark on August 18, sets record

BENGALURU: Karnataka on August 18 recorded the highest renewable energy (RE) generation of 143 million units (MU) increasing the share of this component of power generated to 80% of the total generation of 179 MU. Energy department officials said that of this share, the maximum was from wind energy (65.8 MU), while hydro and solar contributed with 55.3 MU and 22.6 MU, respectively. 'On August 18, 80% of Karnataka's grid was green. This is the highest compared to any other state. Although the average annual demand this year is about 15% higher than last year, current usage is 21 million units less,' said Additional Chief Secretary, energy department Gaurav Gupta. Energy department data showed that Karnataka's power consumption on August 18 was 179.03 MU, while last year on the same date it was higher, at 200.35 MU. Also the peak load on August 18, 2025 was 9,729 Mega Watt (MW), and the same last year on the same date was 9,853 MW. However as power demand reduced due to increased rainfall and drop in temperature, the state was unable to make the most of the increased generation economically. It was unable to sell the excess power to the grid and make profits as the overall demand reduced because of the rains. On August 18, the state sold 8.85 MU power at Rs 4.12 per unit, earning Rs 3.65 crore. Karnataka also supplied 6.616 MU to Punjab as an advance power banking agreement. This was apart from the returning banking agreement of 13.43 MU to Uttar Pradesh and Punjab on a daily basis. Officials said this was done to meet the surplus power generation.
