Miami's Haitian community embraces Pope Leo XIV's Haitian roots
Miami's Haitian community is rejoicing after news emerged that Pope Leo XIV may have Haitian roots, a revelation that's deepening pride and spiritual connection during Haitian Heritage Month.
In an interview on CBS This Morning, the Pope's brother, John Prevost, confirmed their maternal grandparents were from Haiti, instantly sparking celebration among one of South Florida's largest immigrant groups.
Barbershop buzz and cultural pride
At Fresh Cut Barbershop in Miami, Antoine Prevost, a barber who shares the Pope's last name, was already calling him "cousin."
"I think we family because my last name is Prevost and his last name is Prevost," he said.
Marie Ange Fleurissant is also proud of the Pope. Hearing the news, she said, "Pè a se on Ayisyen," which means "The Pope is a Haitian."
We caught up with Marie Destine at the Little Haiti Cultural Arts Center. She said, "I feel like it's a blessing in disguise and I hope good thing is going to come for the country."
Faith, heritage and hope
Haiti is still in political turmoil and being overrun by gangs. Destine hopes the Pope will be able to do something to help. "You represent God, we expect something from you. If you Haitian descent that mean we're going to get something out of it."
Back at the barbershop, Prevost the barber says, "I'm very happy, I hope he go and help my country."
Paul Germel, who was waiting to get his hair cut, is also optimistic. "I feel good. I am happy. I hope the Pope supports Haitian and to help Haiti too."
Father Reginald Jean-Marie, who leads Notre Dame d'Haiti—the largest Haitian Catholic church outside the country—is feeling an immense sense of pride. "We needed something to lift up our spirit to know that from all the great contributions that Haitians have brought to the world and that we still who we are."
Back to the Pope's brother, John, he says, "That's part of his job to bring the Catholic community together again and he's already doing it."

Pope Leo XIV was on the front of nearly every newspaper worldwide. His face is already one of the most recognizable in the world. Chicago is also taking center stage on late night TV. 'Regardless of your beliefs, I think it's pretty cool that Chicago's getting represented on a global scale,' Molly Meinhart said. In front of another Chicago icon — the Wrigley Field Marquee — Meinhart says the pope will take his place in a long line of Chicago icons. 'It's pretty cool piecing together all of the things that have always been famous and now new famous things. I can say I lived in Chicago when we got the pope,' Meinhart said. One of Chicago's signature hot dog stands, the Weiner's Circle, paid tribute to the pope. 'I think it's incredible. I hope he'll be an excellent representative of the city and the needs of Americans and Catholics worldwide,' Matt Ott said. Chicago embraced the pope in t-shirts, social media memes and sandwiches. Sports fans have attended Bears games dressed as Mike Ditka. Now, baseball fans are coming to Sox games as the pope. 'I saw a meme about the Bean being placed in the Vatican, I thought it was a funny thing. It's important that it's a new place for America in the world,' Liya Johny said. In Dolton, William Nowling lives next to the pope's childhood home. He knows his block is a landmark because it once sheltered Chicago's newest icon. Yulissa Breaks Silence After Shocking ‘Love Island USA' Season 7 Exit

The 27-year-old Love Island USA contestant has finally addressed resurfaced podcast clips in which she used racial slurs – videos that likely led to her abrupt exit from the villa in Season 7, Episode 2. On June 6, the Miami, Florida, native posted an official statement to her Instagram account, where she addressed the allegations against her and apologized for using the N-word. 'First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using. Podcast clips from years ago have recently resurfaced, and I want to address it directly,' she began. 'In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it. I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use.' The former Islander continued, 'At the time, I was speaking casually in conversation, not thinking deeply or critically about what I was saying. But that doesn't take away from how wrong it was. The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment.' 'I've changed a lot since then, not just in how I speak, but in how I show up, how I carry myself, and how I honor the experiences of others,' she added. 'Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability." The statement concluded, 'There have also been fake statements circulating, things written or said by others that don't reflect me or my heart. I want to clarify that this is my voice and my words. On May 29, Escobar was revealed as one of the Season 7 cast members alongside nine other singles heading to Fiji to compete on the popular reality dating show, which airs six days a week on Peacock. However, eighteen minutes into Episode 2, the show's narrator Iain Stirling said that Yulissa was gone. 'Welcome back to Love Island USA. Yulissa has left the villa,' he said, hinting that she may have been removed in the middle of the night. Oddly, there was no further explanation – and the announcement was so casual that some viewers didn't even notice until the end of the episode during the recoupling. Adding to the confusion, there was no acknowledgment of Yulissa's absence from the other Islanders or her new partner, Ace Greene, whom she had just coupled up with the night before.
