Pay by glasses: Alipay+ and Meizu launch world's first AR smart glasses with voice-activated eWallet
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Alipay+ has launched the world's first smart glasses with an integrated eWallet payment solution. The world's first real-world smart glasses-embedded eWallet payment transaction was conducted in Hong Kong via AlipayHK, using the Meizu StarV Snap smart glasses.
The development marks a major milestone for Alipay+ as it advances global mobile payment innovation. It also expands the use case scenarios for the AR glass industry while creating new growth avenues for eWallets and merchants.
With the pair of Meizu StarV Snap glasses, a user can easily make an eWallet payment via QR scans or voice commands. The feature is made possible by a combination of Alipay+'s AI-powered intent recognition, voice interface, and voiceprint authentication features.
According to Alipay+, the feature will be rolled out to its global partner eWallets in 2025 upon the integration of Alipay+'s upgraded tech suite for smart glasses.
Smart glasses as a new payment device
Alipay+ has been exploring smart glasses as a new payment method as it had previously debuted a smart glasses payment solution with Rokid in China. The latest integration is powered by Alipay+'s latest software development kit (SDK), embedded into all new Meizu smart glasses. The feature is supported by Meizu's optical waveguide display technology, voice noise cancellation and capture technology, and camera-based QR code scanning, which provides a hands-free experience.
From the demo video, the glasses use eye tracking to detect the QR code and the user can state the payment amount by voice. It relies on voiceprint recognition to authenticate the payment.
To recap, Alipay+ is a unified cross-border wallet gateway under Ant International. It currently connects over 1.7 billion user accounts from 36 global eWallets, national QR schemes, and banking apps to 100 million merchants across more than 70 core markets.
With one integration, eWallet providers and financial institutions can access Alipay's expanding toolkits for customer engagement and business growth. This includes integration of QR based and card payments via a global NFC solution. Alipay+ also enables a full range of agentic AI features which include a MCP-based AI payments built on Alipay+ GenAI Cockpit, an AI-as-a-Service platform for fintech companies.
Peng Guo, General Manager of the XR Division at Meizu, said, 'The offline payment function of smart glasses launched overseas by Meizu and Alipay+ has set a new technological benchmark for the industry.'
'The innovation in the payment scenario has enhanced the practicality and appeal of smart glasses and promoted the progress and development of the AR glasses industry. We hope this function will bring more convenient experiences to users,' he added.
Meanwhile, Ant International Chief Innovation Officer, Jiangming Yang, said 'We are grateful to work with industry leaders like Meizu to pioneer smart glasses-embedded payment solutions. By unlocking payment capabilities, smart glasses will rapidly transform into the next-gen personal device like the mobile phone.'
He continued, 'We look forward to supporting more industry partners with one integration into Alipay+'s premium wallet ecosystem across global markets, to help them build broader user scenarios and achieve growth'
While Meizu is back in Malaysia as a smartphone brand, there are no pricing and availability details yet for the new smart glasses in Malaysia. At the moment, Alipay+ already supports cross-border payments for eWallets such as Touch 'n Go eWallet where travellers can make cashless payments abroad like a local. — SoyaCincau

No reason to hike sugar price, finance ministry tells MSM Malaysia
MSM Malaysia is one of two sugar refineries in the country, the other being Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The finance ministry has urged sugar manufacturer and refinery MSM Malaysia to refrain from hiking the price of white sugar once the revised sales and service tax (SST) takes effect next month. The ministry said that MSM Malaysia was eligible to apply for tax exemptions for raw sugar and was benefitting from monthly incentives from the government to ensure stable supply and prices. 'Refiners and manufacturers of sugar in Malaysia can seek exemption on their upstream costs. This is provided for under Item 1, Column (2), Schedule B of the Sales Tax (Persons Exempted from Payment of Tax) Order. 'Therefore, there should not be any increase in price for refined sugar,' it said in a statement today. MSM Malaysia is one of two sugar refineries in the country, the other being Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd. The ministry also reiterated that white sugar would remain untaxed in the new SST scheme as it falls under the category of essential goods, to avoid inflating the cost of living for the majority. Yesterday, MSM Malaysia's group CEO Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad said that the new 5% SST on raw sugar was expected to put pressure on input costs and push up refined sugar prices for industrial buyers. He said MSM was seeking clarification from the government regarding the new tax scheme, which kicks in on July 1, The Edge Malaysia reported.

Penang has enough land to meet industrial demand for next 15 years, CM says amid RM13b in Q1 investments
GEORGE TOWN, June 20 — Penang has sufficient land to meet industrial needs in the state for the next 10 to 15 years, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. He said today there was a perception that the state is short of industrial lands but in reality, the state still has lands that can be developed for use. 'Land is not an issue, currently, we have about 809.4 hectares (2,000 acres) of land in the pipeline in varying stages of completion,' he told reporters after launching the Penang Industrial Masterplan 2030 at Eastin Hotel here. He said the Batu Kawan industrial park that is about 404.7 hectares (1,000 acres) took about 15 years to be developed since 2008. Chow said the demand for industrial land was also not that high. 'On average, about 40.47 hectares of land are needed in a year,' he said. So the 809.4 ha of land will take a long time to be filled up, he added. He explained industrial lands do not only refer to new lands but included those being reclaimed, under request for proposal process and several other development stages before it can be used. He said not all new investments require new lands, as some are reinvestments by existing plants that are merely adding new facilities in the remaining sites of their plants. 'There were also other investors such as from China who prefer to start operations as soon as possible,' he said. He said these group of investors will buy existing unused plants or lease it from the previous owner. Additionally, he said there are private developers that are constructing new factories to be sold or leased to investors. 'So, not all investors need new lands, there are so many different types of investments that contribute to the state's economy,' he said. When asked about the revenue recorded by the state as a result of the sale of industrial lands, he said the revenue generated was minimum as it was not the state's main focus. 'What's important is the value of investments being brought in,' he said. He said in the first quarter of this year, Penang recorded investments totalling RM13 billion. Meanwhile, on the industrial masterplan, Chow said it is the way forward for the state to transform the state's industrial sector and strengthen its position as the Silicon Valley of the East. He said the masterplan considered important infrastructure projects such as the Penang International Airport expansion and development of a green and smart technology hub for the electrical and electronic sector.

Reforms not mere rhetoric to unity govt, says PMO
The Prime Minister's Office said the unity government remains open to feedback and sees it as a chance for further improvements. PETALING JAYA : The Prime Minister's Office has dismissed claims that the government's reform agenda has stalled, saying they are actively under way and not just mere rhetoric. Senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the government views every criticism as an opportunity for improvement and that its current achievements are a reflection of this approach. 'The government's reform agenda is proceeding consistently – not just in a day, not merely through statements, but through structured action,' he said in a broadcast on Facebook this afternoon. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has repeatedly defended the pace of reforms under his administration, saying that meaningful change takes time and requires consensus from other coalition partners. Earlier this month, the likes of former minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Subang MP Wong Chen had expressed concern over the lack of reforms. Tunku Nashrul also said recent economic indicators were proof of investors' confidence in the government's reform agenda. 'Malaysia successfully recorded RM89.8 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of 2025 – an increase of 3.7% compared to last year, despite a challenging global landscape. 'These investments are expected to generate 1,600 new projects nationwide and create more than 33,000 jobs.' He also said in the microelectronics and semiconductor sectors, Malaysia secured RM4.6 billion in potential investments and RM507 million in potential exports following its participation in Semicon Southeast Asia 2025. 'All these announcements are proof of investors' confidence in our reform policies,' he said.
