
Beyti, an Almarai subsidiary, hosts awareness session on best sustainable practices in the F&B sector
Cairo – As part of its ongoing commitment to Sustainability, and on the occasion of World Environment Day, Beyti – an Almarai subsidiary – organized an environmental awareness session for the media. The event aimed to promote environmental consciousness and highlight the vital role of the food and beverage industry, along with the broader industrial sector, in supporting sustainability efforts and building a greener future for Egypt and the region.
The session featured presentations by Eng. Ahmed Kamal Abdel Moneim, Executive Director of the Environmental Compliance Office and Sustainable Development at the Federation of Egyptian Industries and Technical Advisor for Climate Change; Eng. Ahmed Abo El Saoud, Head of Sustainability for North Africa at Tetra Pak; and Eng. Mohamed Kabbany, Head of Sustainability and Value Chain Development at Beyti – an Almarai subsidiary. These speakers offered in-depth insights into Egypt's sustainability efforts and the industrial sector's crucial role. Discussions centered on recycling and reuse of packaging materials, energy transition strategies, and clean energy initiatives, all emphasizing a commitment to circular economic principles and reduced environmental impact.
The session was inaugurated by Mr. Chris Abboud, General Manager of Beyti – an Almarai subsidiary, who stated, 'At Beyti, we take pride in viewing sustainability not merely as an environmental obligation, but as a golden opportunity for innovation and growth. Our commitment spans from grass to glass, as we continually enhance our practices to reduce environmental impact and promote positive social impact under our integrated 'Doing Better Every Day' strategy relying on our 3 core pillars: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet, and Developing Safe Products. This has resulted in our success in avoiding the production of 290 tons of plastic waste annually in 2024, and our reliance on 67% of raw materials and packaging materials from local sources.'
In this regard, Eng. Ahmed Kamal Abdel Moneim, Executive Director of the Environmental Compliance Office and Sustainable Development at the Federation of Egyptian Industries and Technical Advisor for Climate Change, inaugurated the session by emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the industrial sector and policymakers. He remarked: 'Climate change is not only an environmental challenge, but a shared social and economic responsibility that demands collective action. Beyti stands as a model in Egypt's industrial sector, having successfully integrated sustainability at the core of its operations. This is a true reflection of its commitment to environmental protection and the advancement of a green economy in Egypt. The partnership between government and the private sector is the only path to achieving real and lasting impact.'

It conducts over 11 million quality tests annually, runs more than 1,000 inspection campaigns, and invests EGP 70 million each year in sterilizing production lines. The company also complies with global quality certifications, including FSSC 22000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001.
To reinforce its sustainability journey, Beyti signed a sustainability-linked loan agreement with HSBC, setting clear targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12.3%, decrease water consumption by 9.1%, and cut waste by 55% by 2026. The move signals long-term confidence in local food systems, transforming the group into a national platform equipped to meet rising demand across the UAE and the wider region. It also reflects the UAE's ambition to lead the region in quality, sustainability, and innovation, building integrated, future-ready platforms. Smarter systems, sustainable practices AAFG is also rethinking how food is made and moved — with AI as the game-changer. Whether it's turning cow manure into nutrient-rich soil with help from Australian partners, recycling water on-site, or switching to in-house recycled PET packaging, AAFG is actively closing the loop. Even its convenience foods — like microwave-ready, cook-in-the-bag chicken — come with sustainability in mind. Every day, AAFG supplies 22,000 outlets around the country. 'The challenge is simple: the right product, in the right amount, at the right time. That's where AI really shines,' Safi says. 'Less guesswork means less waste.' While the company has already rolled out organic dairy products, going fully organic will take time. 'Right now, we're focused on making food secure, accessible, and healthy — for everyone,' he adds. The next chapter AAFG has mapped out a bold five-year plan to scale up production, drive innovation, and deepen its sustainability agenda. At the core of this strategy are three key pillars: Scale: AAFG aims to become the GCC's largest table egg producer, targeting an output of 800 million eggs annually. Product innovation : The group is expanding into long shelf-life goods, value-added products, and exploring alternative proteins to meet shifting consumer demand. Regional growth : Strategic partnerships and investments are underway to grow AAFG's footprint across the region and build export-ready capabilities. NEOM green hydrogen project work on schedule; first ammonia production in 2027
The mega NEOM's green hydrogen project remains firmly on schedule, with 4 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power generation set for completion by mid-2026. This will be followed by the commissioning of the electrolysers, with the first ammonia production in 2027, NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) said in a construction update on its website. The company said 80 percent of the construction work has been completed across all sites, including the green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid. 'Milestone equipment is now being received and installed, including wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolysers, the cold box, and pipe rack,' the update said. An equal joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, NGHC's world-scale plant will integrate up to 4 GW of solar and wind energy to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen by the end of 2026 in the form of green ammonia. The company has a 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products for all the green ammonia produced at the facility. In May 2023, NGHC achieved a financial close of $8.4 billion, supported by a $6.1 billion non-recourse loan from 23 local, regional, and international banks and financial institutions. Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits $6.21bln in 2024, marking 43% growth
Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials. The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment. A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs. The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa. The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria.
