Reigning World Chess Champion D Gukesh suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Jan-Krzysztof Duda, the 2021 FIDE World Cup winner and one of Poland's brightest chess stars, in a much-anticipated blitz clash in Katowice, Poland.
The match, which consisted of 6 games, saw the Indian GM fall victim to the Pole in a 5-1 wipeout.
Gukesh, who made history earlier in 2025 by becoming the youngest-ever undisputed world champion, entered the blitz event with momentum and confidence.
Known for his calm nerves and deep calculation, the 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster has excelled in classical formats but has showcased a need to improve more in rapid and blitz time controls.
However, Duda—renowned for his tactical sharpness and fearless play in faster formats—seized the initiative early.
Playing on home turf, the Polish Grandmaster outpaced Gukesh in critical moments, particularly in the middlegame, where his intuition and speed proved decisive.
Duda, after losing out on Game 1, went on a rampage against Gukesh, winning the next five games in a row.
Duda's aggressive opening preparation and dynamic style disrupted Gukesh's rhythm, eventually forcing errors that sealed the result.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has won the Men's T20 World cup and was player of the tournament in the 2011 Men's 50-over Cricket World Cup. With the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 being just 50 days away, Yuvraj said Indian players will have to individually believe that they can win matches for the country if they want to lift the coveted title. '(I would say) play the situation and not the expectation and be in the moment," Yuvraj said at the trophy tour unveiling ceremony in Mumbai on Monday. 'It's a great opportunity to create history. But that doesn't mean that from the start point you are thinking of winning it. You have to experience the whole enigma of it. You have to feel that you have put in the process and results will come." The multiple World Cup-winner advised the players to keep faith in their experience. 'But if you want to win the World Cup, you will be in pressure, things won't go well and that's when experience and self-belief has to take over. You have to believe that you want to win the game for your country (on) that day," added Yuvraj. The tournament, scheduled from September 30 to November 2, will feature eight teams — Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka — competing in a round-robin format. This event marks the first women's global cricket competition in the sub-continent since India hosted the 2016 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. India has previously hosted the Women's ODI World Cup in 1978, 1997, and 2013. The ICC also announced a Trophy Tour starting Monday, visiting all host cities along with New Delhi and Mumbai. IGU sends four-member team to compete in APGC Mid-Amateur Championship
Tangerang (Indonesia), Aug 11 (PTI) The Indian Golf Union (IGU) has sent a four-member team to Indonesia to compete in the first-ever Mid-Amateur Championship organised by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation in association with the Indonesia Golf Association. Led by current IGU All-India Mid-Amateur champion Ranjit Singh, the Indian team comprising Arjun Singh, Simarjeet Singh and Col. Varoon Parmar will participate in the prestigious event at the Gading Raya Golf Club here from August 12-14. A total of 80 golfers from 20 countries will be battling it out for the coveted trophy. Col. Varoon Parmar, who won gold at the World Military Games 2025 and finished runner-up in the IGU All-India Mid-Amateur Championship, bolsters the Indian team with his presence. Simarjeet, who won the IGU All-India Mid-Amateur Golf Championship in 2022 apart from clinching multiple national titles on previous occasions, is also in the team. Sharing his thoughts on competing in the event, Ranjit Singh said: 'I have represented India for many years and I am eternally grateful to the Indian Golf Union for sending me for this prestigious event. 'It is the first such Mid-Amateur Championship being organised by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and I am happy to be part of the first such Indian team to be competing in it. 'The Gading Raya course is in pristine shape but there is likelihood of rain for the next three days, so adapting to the conditions becomes essential." IGU Director General Maj. Gen. (Retd) Bibhuti Bhushan said: 'The IGU has sent a strong team to Indonesia for the inaugural APGC Mid-Amatear Championship. 'The tournament serves our purpose of fostering camaraderie and the spirit of patriotism among the team members. Being contested among more than 20 countries, it also gives an opportunity to the Indian team to test their skills and play for the Tricolour." The championship will be staged in four age divisions – Group A (ages 25 to 29); Group B (ages 30 to 37), Group C (ages 38 to 46) and Group D (aged 47 and above) – and is open to men who have amateur status in accordance with the R&A guidelines. The tournament will be played in individual stroke play format over 54 holes.
