IGP gets leave to cite blogger for contempt again
IGP Razarudin Husain wants blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris punished for contempt of court over an allegedly 'insincere' apology posted on social media on April 30.
KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court has granted Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain leave to commence committal proceedings for a second time against blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris over his allegedly 'non-solemn' apology to him published on social media.
Judicial commissioner Gan Techiong said Razarudin had established a prima facie case against Wan Azri after the court today viewed Wan Azri's statement of regret published on May 1.
He ordered the blogger, also known as Papagomo, to file an affidavit by May 23 to persuade the court why he should not be cited for contempt.
Razarudin was allowed to file a reply to Wan Azri's affidavit by June 6.
Gan fixed June 30 to hear the application and ordered Wan Azri to be present in court.
Earlier, he allowed Wan Azri's lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, to address him although the matter was scheduled to be heard ex parte. Counsel S Raam Kumar, representing Razarudin, did not object.
Rafique said his client had published an apology on four social media platforms and adhered to other orders as directed by the court on April 30.
However, Raam Kumar said the apology was insincere as Wan Azri had posted a five-minute video on May 1 saying that his statement of regret was directed only to the court, and not to Razarudin.
He supplied a pen drive to the court containing footage of the video to prove that Wan Azri was only making a conditional apology.
'He did not direct the apology to my client but to the court to evade going to prison,' he said.
Further, the lawyer said, the apology was posted on four social media platforms on April 30 with the song 'Maafkan Kami', by the late P Ramlee, playing in the background.
'There must be solemnity in the apology, but here it is a joke,' he said.
Razarudin, in his application filed on Monday, wants Wan Azri to be fined and sent to prison.
On April 30, Wan Azri, decided to purge his contempt just before the start of proceedings before Gan over defamatory and demeaning remarks made earlier this year.
In a statement read in court, Wan Azri, a former police officer, expressed his unreserved and unconditional regret for referring to Razarudin in a demeaning manner in a social media posting on Jan 14.
He also apologised for publishing a doctored photo of Razarudin on the same media platform the following day.
He gave an undertaking to the court that he would post his statement of apology on YouTube, Telegram, X, and TikTok on April 30, which would remain on the social media platforms for at least seven days.
The judge also directed Wan Azri to remove the postings made on Jan 14 and 15, which were the subject matter of the contempt of court proceedings.
On Dec 26 last year, Razarudin filed a RM3 million lawsuit against Wan Azri alleging defamation.
He filed the first application for contempt on Jan 24 after the blogger failed to comply with an injunction order issued on Jan 10.
The injunction prohibits Wan Azri or his agents from publishing or disseminating defamatory statements against Razarudin, both in his official and personal capacities, on any social media platform until the defamation suit is resolved.
Wan Azri was also ordered to retract, remove, and delete video postings on his YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Telegram, and X accounts dated Dec 14, 15, 20 and 22 last year, which contained the alleged defamatory statements against Razarudin.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A powerful explosion early this morning damaged three houses in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, with police suspecting the incident was linked to a debt dispute. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Helmi Aris said initial investigations indicated that firecrackers were thrown into one of the houses, causing a significant explosion that damaged the targeted home and two adjacent properties. The ceilings and front yards of all three homes were damaged by the 1.05am blast. Two vehicles parked outside the affected homes were also damaged by the impact, said Helmi in a statement. 'The incident is suspected to be related to a debt. The suspects are believed to be two unidentified men who fled in a car,' he said. Nearly 160,000 harmful online content removed this year, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. PETALING JAYA : Social media platforms Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube have removed 159,518 pieces of harmful content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying, and fake news as of yesterday, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. These removals were part of 174,473 takedown requests made so far this year, Bernama reported him as saying. 'About 51% of the content involved online gambling, 25% were related to scams, 12% cyberbullying, and 9% fake news,' Fahmi said at the ministry's monthly assembly. He said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. These three platforms account for nearly 95% of the problematic content identified. Fahmi also raised concerns about the continued presence of child exploitation content online, especially on Facebook. 'This raises questions about whether current laws and cooperation are enough, or if we need a more strategic approach,' he said, citing last year's joint operation, known as Op Pedo, between the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). On efforts to regulate social media, Fahmi noted that a new licensing framework introduced earlier this year aimed to make digital platforms safer, especially for children. He also highlighted the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, passed in Parliament last December and set to be enforced soon. The Act gives MCMC the authority to act against platforms that fail to meet safety requirements. The OnSA has received royal assent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and is currently being prepared for enforcement.

Influencer Mekyun lodges report over indecent child-related content
Influencer Wee Yun Nee, popularly known as Mekyun, lodged a report at Bukit Aman today, accompanied by her lawyer and brother, Jason. (Instagram pic) PETALING JAYA : Influencer Wee Yun Nee, popularly known as Mekyun, has filed a police report after discovering a Facebook group which posted, among others, pictures of her younger self. In a social media post, Wee said she lodged the report at Bukit Aman. She was accompanied by her lawyer and brother, Jason. 'Do not remain silent if this happens to you', she said and urged children to not be afraid to inform their parents if they are similarly harassed. On Wednesday, Malaysiakini reported that Wee took to social media to raise awareness about Facebook groups promoting child-related indecent content. She said she became aware of such groups after numerous followers had alerted her that an image of her in a 'baju kurung' school uniform when she was younger was being circulated. Wee urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the matter. Earlier today, Wanita PKR had called for swift action to be taken against those who perpetrated sexual crimes against minors after the discovery of a Facebook group which shared photos of underage schoolchildren. The party wing demanded that the police, MCMC and women, family and community development ministry take immediate and serious action on the matter. The 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah' page, now inaccessible, had over 12,000 members and many explicitly sexual comments and captions on its photos. The images included underage students wearing primary and secondary school uniforms, traditional wear, sports attire, and casual clothing. The issue came to light after rapper Ariz Ramli, better known as Caprice, was notified of the group's existence via an Instagram message. The group was then reported to MCMC as well as the police.
