PETALING JAYA : Influencer Wee Yun Nee, popularly known as Mekyun, has filed a police report after discovering a Facebook group which posted, among others, pictures of her younger self.
In a social media post, Wee said she lodged the report at Bukit Aman. She was accompanied by her lawyer and brother, Jason.
'Do not remain silent if this happens to you', she said and urged children to not be afraid to inform their parents if they are similarly harassed.
On Wednesday, Malaysiakini reported that Wee took to social media to raise awareness about Facebook groups promoting child-related indecent content.
She said she became aware of such groups after numerous followers had alerted her that an image of her in a 'baju kurung' school uniform when she was younger was being circulated.
Wee urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the matter.
Earlier today, Wanita PKR had called for swift action to be taken against those who perpetrated sexual crimes against minors after the discovery of a Facebook group which shared photos of underage schoolchildren.
The party wing demanded that the police, MCMC and women, family and community development ministry take immediate and serious action on the matter.
The 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah' page, now inaccessible, had over 12,000 members and many explicitly sexual comments and captions on its photos.
The images included underage students wearing primary and secondary school uniforms, traditional wear, sports attire, and casual clothing.
The issue came to light after rapper Ariz Ramli, better known as Caprice, was notified of the group's existence via an Instagram message. The group was then reported to MCMC as well as the police.

Medical costs add to trauma for Malaysians set ablaze in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Aug 15 — The families of two Malaysian tourists set ablaze here on August 7 fear their medical expenses could exceed insurance coverage. Gan Kin In, 80, said he and his wife, Kek Ley Lan, expressed gratitude to the Malaysian and Thai governments, along with other relevant agencies, for their assistance following the incident involving their daughter and her boyfriend. 'We have been in Bangkok for the past week. The Malaysian government, through the Embassy, has given us constant support, while the Thai side, through the Tourist Police and the Tourism and Sports Ministry, has provided transportation and accommodation,' he told Bernama on Friday. The two Malaysians, Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and her boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at about 10 pm on Aug 7. However, Kin In said they were worried about the medical expenses, which had already reached around 150,000 baht after just over a week of treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. He said the Thai government had agreed to provide total compensation of up to 550,000 baht per person. 'We are worried that the total amount of compensation may not be enough to cover the total medical costs here, as the charges are quite high,' he said. Kin In, a retiree, added that doctors were not optimistic about allowing the victims to be transferred back to Malaysia anytime soon. 'Yesterday, Xiao Zhen had a fever and high blood pressure, but she has recovered today. Her condition is now more stable, and if her health permits, doctors will carry out minor skin operations in phases,' he said. In the latest update on Xiao Zhen's condition, Kin In said doctors estimated it would take around two months for her to recover after the skin graft procedures, which would need to be done in stages to minimise pain and discomfort. Meanwhile, Yik Leong, who is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Police General Hospital, is also reported to be in a stable condition and is being cared for by his aunt, Ong Siew Kien. — Bernama

Banana bandit busted: 70kg fruit theft lands Johor man in custody

KLUANG, Aug 15 — A 36-year-old unemployed man was arrested by police for allegedly stealing 70 kilogrammes of bananas from a plantation in Kampung Sungai Besoi, Layang Layang, last night. Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said authorities received a report of a man trespassing at the banana plantation at 11.20pm. 'Police also managed to seize six bundles of bananas weighing 70kg and confiscated a Perodua Kancil car that was driven by the suspect,' he said in a statement today. Bahrin said a check on the suspect's background found no previous criminal records, but he tested positive for methamphetamine use during a drug test. He said the case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass, which carries a maximum six-month jail sentence, a fine, or both if convicted. 'We have remanded the suspect for four days starting today pending investigation,' he said. Police urged anyone with information on the case to assist investigators by contacting the Kluang district police station at 07-7784222 or its direct line at 07-7784256.
