Banana bandit busted: 70kg fruit theft lands Johor man in custody
Kluang police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said authorities received a report of a man trespassing at the banana plantation at 11.20pm.
'A team of policemen from the Layang Layang police station were dispatched to the plantation, where the male suspect was arrested at 11.50pm.
'Police also managed to seize six bundles of bananas weighing 70kg and confiscated a Perodua Kancil car that was driven by the suspect,' he said in a statement today.
Bahrin said a check on the suspect's background found no previous criminal records, but he tested positive for methamphetamine use during a drug test.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass, which carries a maximum six-month jail sentence, a fine, or both if convicted.
'We have remanded the suspect for four days starting today pending investigation,' he said.

'Even after ransom payments, syndicates continue selling the compromising material on platforms like Telegram to paedophile communities,' Siraj told Bernama Radio today. He also warned social media merchants face new risks of being falsely accused when scammers duplicate their ads, deceive buyers and exploit buyer information to defraud the genuine sellers. When victims report fraud, the legitimate merchants' accounts may be frozen under suspicion, he added. Siraj also noted modern scams increasingly use AI-generated fake content, leaked data from major tech companies like Meta, and social engineering to study victim behaviour. To address these threats, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) now operates 24/7 with an expanded cybercrime mandate. ‘Feel they can rob with impunity': UK police warn of brazen shoplifters as cases top 500,000
LONDON, Aug 16 — Some shoplifters 'feel they can rob shops with impunity', a British policing chief has said, reported PA Media/dpa. Katy Bourne, the national lead for shoplifting at the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, said more robust police interventions and 'meaningful criminal justice measures' are needed to prevent reoffending. Shoplifting hit a record high in 2024, with the number of offences surpassing 500,000 for the first time, up 20 per cent from 2023. Writing in the Telegraph on Saturday, the police and crime commissioner for Sussex said: 'What on Earth has happened to our high streets and our city centres? Why do some people feel they can rob shops with impunity and abuse and assault staff without any fear of retribution?' There must be rehabilitation for some offenders as well as 'significant alternatives to our overcrowded prisons', she said. Sussex will see 'the first electronic tagging scheme for persistent shoplifters', Bourne said. The force will work with the courts on how to issue the tags and with industries to see how they can be monitored. The policing chief also criticised the 'purist application of data protection law' advising shopkeepers not to share images of suspected offenders. She said she is pleased that forces including Sussex Police will roll out live facial recognition cameras in specially adapted police vans. Don't play cops-and-judges over Jalur Gemilang issues, Fahmi tells Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The public has been reminded not to resort to vigilantism or unlawful actions against any party committing offences linked to the Jalur Gemilang flag, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. All matters involving investigations, prosecutions and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, Fahmi said following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday. 'Don't act as the police, lawyers and judge (as) it's wrong, leave it to the police to investigate, leave it to the AGC to prosecute and leave it to the courts to make a decision,' he said after the launch of the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu here today. Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof also attended the launch. He said he was given to understand that there were individuals called up by the police after a rally that was held to 'teach' certain parties, but further action will be left to the authorities.
