#NSTviral: Dashcam captures moment lorry veers into Kancil

KUALA LUMPUR: A viral dashcam video showing a lorry veering into a Perodua Kancil and causing it to crash on a highway has triggered widespread anger among netizens. The 26-second clip, shared by a Reddit user, captures the moment the lorry, while signalling left, veered into the lane and side-swiped a Perodua Kancil from behind, causing it to crash to the side of the road. "It happened along the stretch of highway near MSU, around 9.34pm on June 1, 2025," claimed the user. "Earlier, the same truck was behind me in the far right overtaking lane, so I accelerated to distance myself. Moments later, this happened. I had a bad feeling about the lorry. I'm seriously shaken. I hope the driver is okay," the user added. The incident drew various comments online. A Reddit user wrote that the Kancil was likely caught in the lorry's blind spot. "The Kancil was right in the truck's blind spot, just bad luck, in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said. Another user, @Bearkuching, warned others to stay clear of lorries. "Never stay in the same lane or close to trucks. Either let them pass or overtake fast. Don't trust them."

'I couldn't just drive away,' says man who aided family with stranded car

KOTA BARU: When 21-year-old Mohamad Shafiq Haiqal Hamid saw two children pushing a stalled car by the roadside just after midnight, something tugged at his conscience. At first, he drove past, concerned that it might be a ploy by someone with bad intentions. But the image of a boy and a young girl struggling to push the Perodua Kancil lingered in his mind, and he knew he couldn't just leave them behind. "At first, I just watched and continued driving because I was worried it could be a ploy by someone with bad intentions. "But I couldn't bear the thought of the children, so I turned back. I was determined, and I wasn't alone. Plus, the road was busy with vehicles," said Shafiq from Kampung Kedai Buloh here. He was heading home with two cousins when the incident occurred last Saturday near Pantai Kemayang. What he found upon returning was a mother and her three children, including a toddler, stranded in the car. The woman had just finished her small business for the day and was trying to get home. One of her children, an 11-year-old boy, had walked to a petrol station earlier but could only afford RM2 worth of fuel. "I initially thought it was a battery issue, so we tried using jumper cables to start the car, but it didn't work. "Then I asked if there was petrol in the tank. When the woman said her son had only managed to fill RM2 worth, my heart sank," he said. Moved by the family's situation, Shafiq drove to the nearest petrol station to buy more fuel. He also picked up some food for the children before returning. "I couldn't speak to her for long, but she thanked me before leaving. I felt relieved to have helped, but I regretted not asking for her phone number," he said. Determined to offer further help, Shafiq turned to the comments section of his now viral TikTok video, which has since garnered over 500,000 views, to track her down. "Alhamdulillah, I eventually got her number. She was initially hesitant when I said I wanted to visit, but she agreed in the end," he said. During the visit, Shafiq discovered that the woman was also caring for her husband, who is a person with disabilities following an accident. "Their situation really touched me. I'm just thankful I could help, even in a small way," he added.

Duo nabbed after string of surau break-ins in Kuala Pilah

KUALA PILAH: Two men, aged 19 and 20, have been arrested for allegedly stealing money from donation boxes at several suraus and mosques across the state, particularly in the Kuala Pilah district. The suspects were apprehended on Wednesday following a series of break-ins, which reportedly occurred around midnight on Tuesday. They are believed to have targeted five mosques to cover house rent and vehicle maintenance. Kuala Pilah district police chief, Superintendent Muhamad Mustafah Hussin, said donation boxes at Masjid Sungai Dua Kecil, Masjid Kuala Sungai Dua, Masjid Kariah Kampung Parit, Masjid Nur Salbiah, and Masjid Kariah Sungai Dua Besar had been tampered with. Acting on information and intelligence, the Kuala Pilah district police headquarters carried out separate raids and successfully apprehended the suspects on Wednesday. "Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage helped identify the suspects. They claimed the stolen money was used to service their car and pay rent," he said today. Mustafah said police also seized a Perodua Kancil, two metal donation boxes, RM120 in cash, and tools believed to have been used during the thefts. "Both suspects confessed to all five break-ins in Kuala Pilah and admitted to involvement in several other similar cases," he said. The suspects have been remanded for two days beginning Thursday and are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Thai man dies in crash after stealing car, bike

SUNGAI PETANI: A Thai man was killed in a collision with a lorry on the Sungai Lalang–Bukit Selambau road, shortly after stealing a car and a motorcycle. The man, who worked as a helper at a local restaurant, is believed to have begun his ill-fated journey around 6pm on Monday, when he allegedly stole a Perodua Kancil belonging to his employer in Bedong. "Upon reaching Ambangan Heights, the vehicle was involved in a collision with a Perodua Viva. "The crash caused engine damage, rendering the car immobile," said Kuala Muda district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan. "At the scene of the first accident, the man then stole a Honda Wave motorcycle from a passer-by who had stopped to help and fled in the direction of Bukit Selambau." However, his escape was short-lived. After riding for approximately 10km, the man was involved in another collision—this time with a lorry. "He died at the scene from severe head and body injuries. He is believed to have been in his 20s," Hanyan added. Later that evening, police received two separate reports of vehicle theft—one from the employer and another from the motorcycle owner. "Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the deceased was involved in both thefts. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
