Local Special Olympics athletes surprised with news of joining Team Pennsylvania
After months of practice and preparation, two local athletes find out they're going to a national competition next year.
Not everyone can call themselves an Olympian, but Thursday night two local women reached that athletic status.

Hard work has gotten Reshema Sedziak and Mary Nigro several gold medals and first-place ribbons, but now that hard work is taking them even further.
Thursday night the two women were surprised with the news that they will be representing Team Pennsylvania at the 2026 Special Olympics in Minnesota, starting a new journey for the athletes.
'It feels really good to be selected and I'm proud of myself, all my accomplishments,' Sedziak said.
I got so excited and I'm like, 'Yay, I get to go to Minnesota,' because I've always wanted to be there and see what it's like,' Nigro said.

Sedziak is an Erie County resident and will be competing in golf at the Special Olympics and Nigro is from Mercer County and will be competing in bowling.
The women will join 3,000 other athletes around the nation at the games in June 2026.
Now those two athletes will be hopping on a plane to Minnesota for the 2026 Special Olympics, and when they heard the news here on Thursday, emotions were running high.
'It feels really good to know that I'm able to do this, and that I can bowl a good score,' Nigro said.
'I was nervous, I thought they were going to announce my husband's name, but they announced my name. I'm like, 'What?'' Sedziak recalled.
Team Pennsylvania's golf coach met his newest player for the first time at the event at 5 Iron Golf. He said he's ready to get to work with Sedziak.
'Actually, one of the first things she said to me is that she's never flown before, and I used to be terrified of flying, so I was trying to tell her a little about that, but I'm really looking forward to practicing,' Marc McCarey, Team Pennsylvania's golf coach, went on to say.
Steelers selected to play 2025 home game in Ireland
McCarey and Sedziak wasted no time practicing for the big competition, hitting the golf simulator shortly after the announcement.

Chiles swears by a less-is-more approach to keeping her sensitive skin looking and feeling its best. 'A majority of the time, I only use a good cleanser, an exfoliator, and then a nice, silky moisturiser,' she says. 'I keep it very simple, but make sure everything is hydrated and my skin looks good and glowy.' When it comes to favourite products, Chiles lights up talking about being 'down bad' (same, girl) for Hero. 'I have Mighty Patches in every bag, my car, my room, and probably in five different bathrooms,' she says. Her favourites? 'Literally all of them, but since I go to practice a lot, [I love] the invisible ones and the dark spot ones with the prickly points.' Diontae Johnson: One bad year doesn't define me
Wide receiver Diontae Johnson was let go by four teams last year, and he had only one offer this year. Johnson signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum of $1.17 million in what might be his last chance in the NFL. 'They were the only team to hit me up,' Johnson said, via Mary Kay Cabot of In 2024, the Steelers traded Johnson to the Panthers, who traded him to the Ravens, who cut him. The Texans signed him and then cut him after 22 days. He caught 33 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns in the worst season in his career. 'I don't like to speak on a lot of stuff, so I just, everybody's going to have their opinions,' Johnson said. 'At the end of the day, I'm the only one in that room that really knows what's going on. I can only go off of what I know and then try to put out my best effort. But last year is last year. I'm trying to turn and change that narrative and move the right way and just keep going.' Johnson, 28, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 when he caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. Thus, he writes off 2024 as an aberration. 'One bad year,' Johnson said. 'It's one year. I had five great seasons in Pittsburgh. I had one year, that doesn't define me as a player. None of that. My character or none of that. Steelers unfazed by Watt's absence
PITTSBURGH (BLACK & GOLD NATION) — No T.J. Watt is giving no worries to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and the rest of the team during mandatory minicamp as Watt continues his holdout in hopes a new contract.'We've expressed desire to get the business done and he has as well so we'll continue to work,' Tomlin said. 'We've been here before.' Rodgers in camp and committed to Steelers Tomlin, Watt and the Steelers were in a similar position back in 2021. The only difference this time is that he currently isn't training at the team's facility.'Certainly we'd like him to be here, but certainly not surprised by where we are,' Tomlin said.'Of course, we would love to have T.J. out there,' Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward last time the Steelers and Watt had a contract dispute, it didn't get resolved until just days before the season began. Back then, he signed an extension that made him the highest paid defensive player in the is entering the final year of that deal and is likely looking to surpass Myles Garrett's record four year, $160 million deal that he agreed to in March.
