Brazil prosecutors charge former Americanas executives with fraud, local media reports

Reuters01-04-2025

SAO PAULO, March 31 (Reuters) - Brazilian federal prosecutors charged 13 former executives of retailer Americanas (AMER3.SA), opens new tab for fraud, including former Chief Executive Miguel Gutierrez, O Globo newspaper reported on Monday, citing the document with the charge.
Americanas had in early 2023 revealed accounting inconsistencies that led the company to file for bankruptcy, and later said it had been impacted by fraudulent activities from its former management.

Brazil's federal prosecutors' office did not immediately respond to a request for comments outside normal business hours.
O Globo reported that the prosecutors pointed Gutierrez as the main responsible party, but said they also targeted other former top executives including Anna Saicali, Jose Timotheo de Barros and Marcio Cruz Meirelles on charges of fraud.
Timotheo de Barros' lawyer said he will demonstrate a rushed accusation which lacks impartiality.
A representative for Saicali declined to comment and representatives of Gutierrez and Cruz did not immediately respond to request for comment outside normal business hours.
Americanas started an arbitration against the four former executives earlier this year.
Last October, Brazil's securities regulator CVM accused them, along with other managers, of alleged insider trading.

Seven killed, 30 hurt after bridge collapse causes train derailment

Two children were among those hospitalized, one of them in serious condition, Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, said on Telegram. Among those killed was the locomotive driver, Russia's state news agencies reported, citing medics. More: 'Very disappointed': Trump continues to criticize Putin's war tactics during negotiations Russia's ministry of emergency situations said on Telegram that its main efforts were aimed at finding and rescuing victims, and that some 180 personnel were involved in the operation. Russia's Baza Telegram channel, which often publishes information from sources in the security services and law enforcement, reported, without providing evidence, that according to preliminary information, the bridge was blown up. Reuters could not independently verify the Baza report. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Since the start of the war that Russia launched more than three years ago, there have been continued cross-border shelling, drone strikes, and covert raids from Ukraine into the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions that border Ukraine. The train was going from the town of Klimovo to Moscow, Russian Railways said. It collided with the collapsed bridge in the area of a federal highway in the Vygonichskyi district of the Bryansk region, Bogomaz said. The district lies some 62 miles from the border with Ukraine. More: US and Russia clash over intensifying Ukraine war U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Moscow and Kyiv to work together on a deal to end the war, and Russia has proposed a second round of face-to-face talks with Ukrainian officials next week in Istanbul. Ukraine is yet to commit to attending the talks on Monday, saying it first needed to see Russian proposals, while a leading U.S. senator warned Moscow it would be "hit hard" by new U.S. sanctions. Newcastle, Liverpool Arsenal and Aston Villa are thought to be keen. Pedro hit ten goals in 27 Prem games last term. But he was left out of the last two games of the season by boss Fabian Hurzeler after a training-ground bust-up with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke. Ahead of Brighton's final day victory at Tottenham, boss Hurzeler offered an update on Pedro's situation. The 32-year-old said: "With Joao, we had a small issue in training, a type which isn't uncommon from time to time at all football clubs. 'We dealt with it internally and the matter is closed. 'Joao is an incredible football player, he is a match-winner for us and he is a great player and that's why we invested in him. Real Betis ready to employ unusual transfer tactic to land Man Utd flop Antony

Antony is keen to stay at Real Betis but with the financial realities of a deal with Manchester United proving problematic, reports in Spain suggest a novel solution Manchester United are keen for Antony to leave this club this summer and Real Betis are eager to make his loan move a permanent one. But there remains a significant hurdle to overcome: the finances. The La Liga side, heartbroken by Wednesday night's UEFA Conference League final defeat to Chelsea, cannot meet United's asking price of £40m while Antony's massive salary of £200,000 per week may be a stumbling block too - despite the Brazilian enjoying his time in Seville. ‌ Yet a report in Marca suggests that Betis may now look to part-own Antony in a bizarre move that would see United retain an interest and talks will take place between the clubs in the next couple of days to explore a possible agreement. ‌ Of a more likely nature would be for Betis to agree another loan for Antony while paying a substantial percentage of his wages. Antony, who United paid £86m for, has scored nine goals in 26 games since joining Betis midway through the season. And while he struggled to make an impact against Chelsea, the overall impact is that of a player completely rejuvenated since leaving the misery of Old Trafford. United are expecting a hectic start to the transfer window. A £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is set to be completed after terms were agreed in the past week, while captain Bruno Fernandes has had his deadline for a potential move to join Al Hilal extended. ‌ The Saudi club are willing to make the Portugal star one of the world's best players but are determined for him to join ahead of next month's Club World Cup. An initial deadline of last Thursday was set but the latest reports suggest he has until late next week to commit. A three-year deal worth up to £200m in a salary is on offer with Al Hilal also expecting to pay a significant fee for Fernandes. He is reportedly giving serious thought to the offer. Every member of United's squad is available for transfer at the right price as the club counts the cost of their dismal campaign and no European football next season. Ruben Amorim's squad requires a significant overhaul to meet the requirements of his 3-4-2-1 system. But it is accepted that several sales are required to fund new signings. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are among those who appear likely to depart this summer.
