Sugar, fat, salt on rise in U.S. breakfast cereals, study shows
Breakfast cereals in the United States now contain more sugar, fat and salt, while key nutrients like protein and fiber are on the decline, according to research published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open. File photo by Miguel Gutierrez/EPA-EFE May 22 (UPI) -- They're a go-to breakfast for millions of kids and adults. They're brightly colored, packed in enticing boxes and often marketed as healthy -- but many cereals today are actually less nutritious than they were a decade ago, a new study has found. Breakfast cereals in the United States. now contain more sugar, fat and salt, while key nutrients like protein and fiber are on the decline, according to research published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open. The study looked at 1,200 newly launched or reformulated cereals sold between 2010 and 2023. Researchers found that while these cereals are often promoted as healthy, their nutrition labels tell a different story. "What's most surprising to me is that the healthy claims made on the front of these products and the nutritional facts on the back are actually going in the opposite direction," study co-author Shuoli Zhao, a professor of agricultural economics at the University of Kentucky, told The New York Times. The study found that, per serving, total fat in breakfast cereals rose by 34%, sodium by 32%, and sugar by nearly 11% over the 13-year period. This trend concerns experts because ready-to-eat cereals are a major part of the American diet, especially for kiddos, The Times reported. Nearly one-third of children eat cereal each morning, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But only 15% eat fruit with their meal, and just 10% of kids eat eggs. Dr. Peter Lurie, head of the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest, called the results surprising. "It's extraordinary that, at a time when Americans are becoming more health conscious, a product often marketed as offering a healthy start to one's day is actually getting less healthy," Lurie told The Times. Some nutrition experts say the food industry creates confusion. "It reinforces my belief that the food marketplace is very confusing, and that's not by accident," said Josephine Connolly-Schoonen, head of the nutrition division at Stony Brook Medicine in New York, who was not involved with the study. "The food industry engineers the confusion." She encourages families to focus on whole foods like overnight oats, eggs, fruit and whole-grain bread. The three largest cereal makers in the United States -- Kellogg's, General Mills and Post -- did not respond to The Times' requests for comment. U.S. cereal makers do produce healthier versions of some brands in countries like Canada and in Europe. Meanwhile, cereals served in U.S. schools have become more nutritious thanks to a 2010 federal law. New rules limiting sugar in school cereals take effect this summer, with even stricter rules coming in 2027, the School Nutrition Association says. Diane Pratt-Heavner, a spokesperson for the group, said she hopes food makers will offer these healthier products to the general American public. "If we're encouraging kids to eat healthier at school," she said, "then we want them to be eating healthier at home too." More information KidsHealth has a list of breakfast ideas for kids. Atletico Madrid to give up on deal for talented defender
Since arriving in Girona, Miguel Gutierrez has been on an impressive upward trajectory. The former Real Madrid left-back was initially a rotational option before a €5m move made his stay permanent. Last year he was one of the revelations of the season, and this year he has been a leader for the Catalan side in the Champions League, and latterly, their battle for survival. Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich amongst others have all been linked with Gutierrez over the past two seasons, but so far he remains at Montilivi. Their chances of holding onto Gutierrez look increasingly slim this year though, after a summer of speculation. Atletico Madrid decide against move for Miguel Gutierrez Image via Defensa Central Atletico Madrid were rumoured to have agreed a deal for Gutierrez at the beginning of the month, but that has been denied by Relevo. They say that Atletico did enquire about Gutierrez, and he was on their left-back shortlist, but after enquiring about the price, both sides decided a deal could not be reached. Advertisement Gutierrez, whom Real Madrid retain a 50% sell-on clause for, has a €35m release clause, but will be allowed to leave for around €20m. Los Blancos have a first refusal for 48 hours too, but despite plenty of interest in Portugal, England, Italy and Germany, there have been no offers yet. Alvaro Carreras, Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso There is of course the much-discussed €9m buyback for Gutierrez too, possessed by Real Madrid. In Germany, one of his suitors was Bayer Leverkusen, and with Xabi Alonso potentially arriving at Real Madrid, it remains to be seen whether he will ask Los Blancos to execute that option. At any rate, they have intensified their scouting efforts with regard to Gutierrez, who is keen on a return to his boyhood club. At the White House, the name of Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras has been mentioned on several occasions too. Interestingly, he does still appear to be on the agenda for Atletico, despite likely commanding a much higher price. Carreras' performances in the Champions League have certainly spiked interest.

The Liverpool right-back, considered one of the best in his position globally, is expected to join on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with the Merseyside club. (Photo by) With Ferland Mendy struggling with injuries and Fran Garcia yet to fully convince, Gutierrez is seen as the ideal candidate to bring balance and competition to the left side of defence. Then there is Nico Paz Another youth product set to return is Nico Paz. Currently shining at Como in Italy, the 20-year-old midfielder has made waves with his vision, poise on the ball, and attacking threat from deeper positions. Advertisement Real Madrid view Nico as either a viable first-team option or a valuable asset who can be managed strategically, depending on the squad's needs in the coming months. With these three acquisitions, Real Madrid's sporting department is making a firm statement: their planning for the future is already well underway. By adding elite-level experience in Alexander-Arnold with the promise and development of Gutierrez and Paz, the club is crafting a squad that blends youth, quality, and ambition.

Brazil's federal prosecutors' office did not immediately respond to a request for comments outside normal business hours. O Globo reported that the prosecutors pointed Gutierrez as the main responsible party, but said they also targeted other former top executives including Anna Saicali, Jose Timotheo de Barros and Marcio Cruz Meirelles on charges of fraud. Timotheo de Barros' lawyer said he will demonstrate a rushed accusation which lacks impartiality. A representative for Saicali declined to comment and representatives of Gutierrez and Cruz did not immediately respond to request for comment outside normal business hours. Americanas started an arbitration against the four former executives earlier this year. Last October, Brazil's securities regulator CVM accused them, along with other managers, of alleged insider trading.
