55-year-old professor held for ‘inappropriate touch' on 12 students during exam in Roorkee
A 55-year-old assistant professor was arrested for allegedly molesting 12 students at the Government Degree College in Roorkee, the police said Friday.
According to the complaint filed by a victim, Dr Abdul Alim Ansari allegedly touched the students 'inappropriately' during the viva of the B.Sc practical examinations on Thursday afternoon, the police said, adding that the incident occurred in a closed room.

Ansari also allegedly wrote his mobile number on the palm of a student, asking her to call him at night after returning home, Gang Nahar police station inspector in-charge RK Saklani said.
When a victim shared what she went through after coming out of the room, the other students revealed how they had also been touched 'inappropriately' by the professor.
After being confronted by the students, Ansari allegedly threatened to cut their marks.

As the matter came to light, the students protested demanding stern action against the professor, who also teaches at another college in Bhagwanpur near Roorkee.
Following the protests, the college management called the police to pacify the angry students.
A complaint was filed by one of the victims following which Ansari was arrested, Saklani said.

During interrogation, Ansari admitted that he had touched the girls, however, he said that he had no bad intentions behind his act.
When asked if he wrote his mobile number on a student's palm, he could not give a satisfactory answer, the police said.
Meanwhile, the two practical examinations conducted by Ansari on Wednesday and Thursday have been cancelled, college authorities informed.

2 killed, child, pregnant woman injured as drunk teen crashes car into Delhi slum
Two men were killed and two others, including a pregnant woman and a five-year-old boy, were in critical condition after a 19-year-old man, allegedly drinking and driving, first hit a cyclist and then rammed his speeding car into a slum dwelling along Pankha Road in Janakpuri in the early hours of Thursday, police officers said. The suspect, Harsh Sehrawat, a resident of Pochanpur in southwest Delhi, was nabbed from the spot by local residents and handed over to the police. He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, officers said. The deceased were identified as Aseem Ansari, 45, and Phool Singh, 35. Singh's wife, Soni Devi, 32, who is six months' pregnant, their five-year-old nephew Vishal Kumar are currently undergoing treatment. A third person, Kuldeep (goes by single name), 28, sustained minor injuries and was discharged after treatment. Preliminary investigation revealed that Phool Singh hailed from Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh and lived in a makeshift dwelling near the crash site with his extended family, including his parents, wife, nephew Vishal, sons Viraj and Rishi, and daughters Mahima and Raunak. He worked with his father, Lallu Ram, as a blacksmith, making iron tools. Ansari, the second victim, was a native of Sitamarhi in Bihar and lived with his wife Khadeeja, three daughters, and 13-year-old son Ghulam in Durga Park. He worked as a helper at a number plate shop in Mayapuri market. 'He was returning home after working overtime at the shop when he was hit by the speeding car,' said a police officer associated with the case, requesting anonymity. 'The others, the injured ones, were asleep in their slum dwelling when the car veered off the road and crashed into them.' According to DCP Veer, Sehrawat was driving a grey-coloured Maruti Swift and was returning from Gurugram with a friend. 'He first hit the bicycle on which Ansari was riding. Ansari was flung onto the car's bonnet and dragged for nearly 250 metres before the vehicle slammed into the slum dwellings, crushing Phool Singh who was asleep near the entrance,' the officer said. 'Vishal was sleeping beside Singh, followed by Soni. That's why they sustained injuries as well,' he added. After the car stopped, slum dwellers and locals caught hold of Sehrawat who was allegedly heavily drunk at the time of the incident. They immediately alerted police and handed him over to them. 'He admitted to partying in Gurugram earlier that night and said he was returning with a friend,' the officer said. Police have registered a case under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving, and causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Police said that Sehrawat finished his schooling recently and his father is a school van driver. Phool Singh's father, Lallu Ram, 65, said the family was asleep when the car tore through their slum. 'I was sleeping at the far end. The car came in so fast. We had to lift it up to rescue my son, daughter-in-law and grandson. The vehicle only stopped because it hit debris near the side. If not, more lives would've been lost,' he said. Ram also said Soni, who was six months pregnant, lost her unborn child. 'Doctors told us the baby couldn't be saved. It's heartbreaking. We were waiting for the new arrival,' he said. Police have yet to confirm the loss of the unborn child. Ansari's son Ghulam, 13, said his father was the sole breadwinner of their family. 'He worked hard for us. My siblings and I go to school — he made sure we did. Now I don't know what we'll do,' he said, holding back tears. The family said it wasn't uncommon for Ansari to return late from work, as he often took on extra hours to earn more. 'He always worked overtime so we wouldn't go without money,' Ghulam added.

‘Custodial death': Dumka DIG suspends two Deoghar cops
Dumka: DIG Ambar Lakda has suspended officers in-charge (OC) of Palajori and Sarath police stations in Deoghar district in connection with the alleged custodial death of a man accused of cyber crime last week. In the suspension orders, the DIG referred to the gross negligence on the part of both the officers — Prabhat Kumar and Suraj Kumar of Palajori and Sarath police stations respectively — while interrogating the arrested accused without following the mandatory norms. The deceased, identified as Meraj Ansari (35), died hours after his arrest by a joint police team of Palajori and Sarath police stations of Deoghar district from his home at Dudhani village under Palajori police station on May 21. He was allegedly thrashed in presence of his family during arrest. Ansari's death sparked large-scale outrage in the area, with hundreds thronging Palajori police station, staging demonstrations, and pelting stones, blaming the cops for subjecting him to torture during interrogation leading to his death. Refuting the allegations, Deoghar police claimed died of an ailment after he was taken to the hospital. Two held for firing at a group in Mangalwar Peth
1 2 3 Pune: Two people were arrested by Faraskhana police after one of them opened fire at a group of men with a country-made pistol in Mangalwar Peth around 2.15am on Sunday. Faraskhana police identified the duo as Rohit Dilip Mane (32) of Lohiyanagar and Qasim Asif Ansari (23) of Kasewadi, both areas are in Bhawani Peth. "Mane and Ansari have earlier been arrested in cases of body offence — Mane is out on bail and was nabbed under MCOCA in 2021 by Kondhwa police. Ansari is also out on bail. The duo are unemployed," said senior inspector of Faraskhana police Prashant Bhasme. A man (36) from Gokhalenagar, who used to live in Mangalwar Peth, lodged the complaint. Bhasme said, "The complainant and his friends were standing and chatting at the entrance of a narrow lane around 2am. Mane and Ansari were speeding around on a two-wheeler and entered the lane. The complainant and his friends are complete strangers to the arrested duo." Police said the group of men told the duo to ride slowly, following which arguments ensued. The group attempted to chase Mane and Ansari's vehicle. "Mane was riding the scooter and Qasim was riding pillion. They halted and Qasim pulled out the country-made pistol. He told the group to not question his 'Bhai'. He fired a round in the air and then tried to fire another towards the group, but the pistol got locked. However, it made a loud noise," he said. "The group charged at Qasim and grabbed him, but Mane fled. They called the police, who questioned Qasim and nabbed Mane," he said. The duo said they had bought the firearm in 2018 from a person in Madhya Pradesh, cops added.
