World Cup winner Varane backs ex-boss Ancelotti to lift Brazil

CNA19-05-2025
HONG KONG :French World Cup winner Raphael Varane has backed his former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti to lift Brazil out of the doldrums when the Italian takes over at the helm of the five-times World Cup winners later this month.
Ancelotti was named Brazil's first permanent foreign coach last week and will start in his new role on May 26 on a contract that runs through to next year's World Cup finals.
The five-times Champions League winning coach will lead the country into June's South American qualifiers, and 2018 World Cup winner Varane believes Ancelotti has the pedigree to reinvigorate the squad following recent struggles.
"What I can say is that in football, in national teams, it's about being at the top level with a very short period of time to prepare yourself to perform," Varane told Reuters on the sidelines of the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens.
"So it's a different challenge that you're facing from the day-to-day with a club.
"But I think if you're capable of winning trophies like the Champions League, and if you're capable of raising your level for big games, then you're capable of doing it anywhere, at any time.
"I think Carlo is a great coach. He has a lot of experience, so he knows how to prepare the players to perform at the right time.
"That's the difficult thing. You have to meet with history. Every time (at the World Cup) it's only one chance, so you can't miss many opportunities. I think at the top level he knows how to do it."
The former defender knows Ancelotti well after they shared two seasons at Real Madrid in the Italian's first spell in charge and together they won the Champions League in 2014, one of four continental crowns Varane collected at the Bernabeu.
Brazil are currently fourth in the standings in the South American preliminaries, 10 points adrift of bitter rivals Argentina, who have already secured their berth at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While the Brazilians remain likely to qualify despite their faltering form, Varane was confident Ancelotti could raise standards to ensure the team are competitive at the finals.
"If he goes there, he knows how to do it, how to prepare the players, feeling comfortable and confident enough because we are talking about Brazil," said Varane. "At that level the players have the quality, they just need to be together and confident."

Leverkusen sign France defender Lois Bade from Sevilla on five-year deal

BERLIN :Bayer Leverkusen have signed France central defender Loic Bade from Sevilla on a five year contract, last season's Bundesliga runners-up said on Thursday. Leverkusen, who kick off their Bundesliga season against Hoffenheim on Saturday, have seen more than half a dozen players leave in the close season, including central defender Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz and playmaker Granit Xhaka. They had won the domestic league and Cup double in 2024. "In Loic Bade we have signed a young but very experienced central defender. He's used to playing against absolutely world-class strikers in La Liga in Spain," said Leverkusen managing director sport Simon Rolfes. "Loic is physically uncompromising and can read the game, an absolute addition to strengthening our defence. We are competitive at the highest level with this defence." The 25-year-old France international started his career at Le Havre and also had a short loan spell at Nottingham Forest before spending two and a half seasons in Spain with Sevilla, with whom he won the Europa League in 2023.

Liverpool's Slot sidesteps Isak queries ahead of Newcastle game

Liverpool boss Arne Slot dodged questions on Thursday about Newcastle United's Alexander Isak with the transfer window closing and the wantaway striker expected to miss Monday's game against Slot's men at St James' Park. Isak was the subject of a 110 million pounds ($148.34 million) bid from Liverpool earlier this month according to media reports, and in a social media post on Tuesday accused Newcastle of breaking promises. Newcastle responded by saying there had been no commitment to sell the 25-year-old who is under contract until 2028. "What I can tell you is not a lot," Slot said of Isak, who is not training with his Newcastle teammates and sat out their 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in last week's season-opener. "It would be much nicer to talk about the players that we have." While the transfer window closes on September 1, Slot does not believe the defending league champions, who have also been strongly linked with a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, will have a busy nine days ahead of them. "I don't think so because then I would be unhappy with the squad we have and I am very, very happy with the squad we have," he told reporters on Thursday. "Two per position is ideal but I prefer less than more because you have to disappoint so many players every single time. "I am really happy with the squad, but if we think we can improve in a certain position and there is a player available that can really make us better ... this club has always shown they will bring these players in but only if they are everything we want." Slot will have Ryan Gravenberch back against Newcastle after the midfielder missed their loss to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield a day after his partner Cindy Peroti gave birth to their first child, and then their 4-2 season-opening win over Bournemouth as he served a suspension. "I think he can make a lot (of difference)," Slot said. "At least, if he is the same player he was as last season." The manager is expecting a much stronger season from Federico Chiesa, who scored a late goal last week against Bournemouth. "I see a totally different Federico now than for large parts of last season which is completely normal because he missed the entire pre-season and he came into a Premier League rhythm in terms of amount of games and intensity," Slot said. "He is in a much better place now and we can all see, when I needed a goal, I looked to the bench and I only had him and a 16-year-old in Rio (Ngumoha). It was more of a choice to bring him in and he delivered." Jeremie Frimpong, however, who limped off late in his Premier League debut last week because of a hamstring injury, will be out until after the international break.

ATP flags more than 162,000 abusive comments in first year of protection service

BENGALURU :Top men's tennis players were shielded from more than 162,000 social media comments containing "severe" abuse during the first year of the Artificial Intelligence-powered ATP Safe Sport initiative, the sport's governing body said on Thursday. The abusive messages, which targeted 245 players, were found and then hidden in real time as the system scanned more than 3.1 million comments for harmful digital content following its launch in July 2024. "Safe Sport creates a healthier online environment, free from hateful comments and negative messages," said Serb Dusan Lajovic, the ATP Player Advisory Council member. "This way my social media presence is defined by who I am, not by my performance on the court." Tennis players, like many athletes, often have to deal with the wrath of anonymous abusers online. A study conducted by the governing bodies of the sport showed last year that many of the offenders were found to be angry gamblers. Former world number three Elina Svitolina said this month following her defeat by Naomi Osaka in Montreal that she had been flooded with abuse and death threats, and blamed the "shameful" behaviour on disgruntled bettors. Men's players are equally prone to abuse and ATP Director of Safeguarding Andrew Azzopardi said that Safe Sport fundamentally changed how his organisation protected athletes online over the last year. "More than one in 10 comments on players' posts were abusive - rising to 50 per cent in extreme cases. While it won't eliminate abuse overnight, it's our first line of defence," Azzopardi said. "Safeguarding player wellbeing is a long-term commitment." During the first year of Safe Sport, officials escalated more than 3,300 comments while they identified 68 perpetrators and initiated 28 law enforcement referrals. Beyond social media, the initiative which currently covers the top 250 singles and top 50 doubles players will also support athletes facing email threats, impersonation, deepfakes as well as scams.
