The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on Monday (August 4) announced plans for nationwide protests on August 5, to mark the second anniversary of the arrest of its founder and former prime minister, Imran Khan.
The protests aim to draw attention to what the party describes as the unjust detention of Khan, who has been incarcerated since his arrest on August 5, 2023.
Khan was arrested at his residence in Lahore following a court conviction in a corruption case. Since then, he has remained in custody at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, facing additional convictions in other cases. The PTI, alongside an alliance of opposition parties known as the Tehreek Tahaffuz Ain-e-Pakistan (TTAP), has framed Khan's detention as 'illegal' and is mobilising a protest movement to demand his release.

Allegations of atrocities towards PTI supporters
Zufiqar Bukhari, an adviser to Khan, condemned the Punjab government's response to the planned protests, alleging that authorities have already begun targeting PTI workers.
'Fearing protest by PTI, the Punjab Government has started arresting party workers, descending into madness by barging into their residences last night, without warrant or providing any arrestable offence,' Bukhari stated. He noted that arrests have occurred in Lahore and Rawalpindi, though he did not provide specific numbers.
Bukhari criticised the preemptive crackdown, saying, 'Their crime? Dare to state a protest, which is yet to happen. That's not lawful, that's tyranny.'
The Express Tribune reported that the PTI, under the TTAP banner, is preparing to launch a significant protest movement. At an emergency press conference on Sunday at the PTI District Secretariat in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), TTAP Secretary General Asad Qaiser outlined the plans. 'On August 5, a nationwide protest will be held under the flags of Pakistan, the PTI, and the white flag of peace,' Qaiser announced, stressing that the protests would remain peaceful and within the bounds of Pakistan's constitution and laws.
Qaiser highlighted the significance of the date, marking two years since Khan's 'illegal' arrest, and called for transparent legal proceedings.
'If there is any evidence against Khan, then it should be presented in an open court,' he urged. He praised Khan as a transformative leader, stating, 'Imran Khan is the most popular and dignified leader of this nation, who not only elevated Pakistan's image internationally but also gave the nation a vision.' Qaiser added that Khan's detention represents a 'direct attack on democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.'
PTI planning district-level protests
Rather than organising a centralised rally in Islamabad, the PTI has opted for district-level protests across the country, following Khan's instructions.
In Peshawar and Khyber districts, a rally led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will commence at 3:30 pm from Hayatabad Toll Plaza on Ring Road and proceed to Qila Bala Hisar. In Swabi, protesters will gather at the Ambar Interchange for a day-long demonstration starting at 3:30 pm and continuing until Isha (evening) prayers. In Nowshera, a protest is planned at Khairabad, also beginning at 3:30 pm.

To ensure widespread participation and documentation, all members of the National Assembly, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and PTI ticket holders have been directed to record videos of their gatherings, either from their residences or protest starting points. These videos will be submitted to district organisations and forwarded to regional leadership for coordination.

From zero-hour to help boxes: Sivankutty pledges new safeguards for students

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty pledged to prioritise the safety and mental well-being of schoolchildren, as reports of violence and abuse continue to shake the state. From zero-hour to help boxes: Sivankutty pledges new safeguards for students Alongside academic initiatives, he warned of stringent action against offenders, stressing that protecting children—both at home and beyond—was the government's foremost duty. In an interview with PTI on Sunday, Sivankutty said such child-friendly initiatives would be implemented in all schools in the southern state, cutting across the government, aided, unaided or private divide. The department will soon outline a special orientation programme for teachers in state schools, equipping them to address students' physical, psychological, and adolescent issues, provide mental support, and prevent substance abuse, he said. The training will focus on identifying changes in children's behaviour and learning patterns, while also encouraging teachers to engage with them in a supportive and approachable manner, he explained. "The government will not tolerate any violence, abuse, or mistreatment of children. We will implement school- and classroom-based strategies to raise awareness and foster trust among students, encouraging them to share their concerns in a safe, confidential environment," Sivankutty said. The General Education Minister's significant announcements came a day after meeting a fourth-grade girl student who was allegedly assaulted by her father and stepmother in the coastal district of Alappuzha. The harrowing story of the torture suffered by the girl came to light after teachers in the private school noticed slap marks on her body and chanced to read a letter written by her detailing her sufferings. The minister had penned an emotional Facebook post in this regard two days ago and assured stringent action in the incident, following which the accused father and stepmother were arrested later. In a similar incident, a stepfather was arrested recently by police for branding the legs of a third-grade student with an iron box in Kollam, Sivankutty said. Detailing the implementation of various initiatives, the minister said children would be encouraged to express their concerns and worries through diary writing and special "zero-hour sessions", in which teachers and students would have brief interactions in non-class times, at schools. He said as part of the recently announced "Suraksha Mitram" project, "help boxes" will be placed in all schools in which children can write confidential letters detailing their issues and drop them in the boxes. "The initiative is set to begin shortly. The Director of General Education will soon be issuing a Standard Operating Procedure to guide the process," he said. "By providing a confidential space for children to report their problems, we hope to identify those who are suffering in silence and provide them with the necessary protection and support," Sivankutty added. The minister also said that the service of student volunteer groups would be explored to identify children who may be suffering in silence. When asked about the extent of success of the LDF government's recently launched "No to drugs" campaign, Sivankutty said it has had an immense impact among schoolchildren in the state. "As the Minister for General Education, I am proud to say that this is a comprehensive effort to create a safer and healthier environment for our students. A key part of this campaign focuses on promoting the physical and mental well-being of people, especially that of youngsters," he said. He said the department has introduced various initiatives in this connection, including extracurricular activities like Zumba classes, to maintain both the physical and mental health of children and as a way for them to de-stress. "We are delighted by the positive feedback we have received from students and parents, which reinforces our belief that these initiatives are making a real difference. We are committed to working closely with our teachers and school managements to ensure this campaign's long-term effectiveness and success," he detailed. The minister further said that the government will continue to listen to all stakeholders and adapt strategies to build a drug-free future for our children. "The government and the General Education Department are fully committed to the safety and well-being of every child in the state," Sivankutty added. Once a person registers on the portal, a certificate is issued in his name, which states that he stands against "vote chori". "I support Rahul Gandhi's demand of digital voter rolls from the EC," the certificate says. The portal also gives the option to the people of calling on a number and filling the link in the SMS to register. The certificate bears the signatures of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal and treasurer Ajay Maken. Several Congress leaders and supporters had registered on the portal and shared the certificates on social media. With Congress leaders amplifying the "vote theft" allegation of Rahul Gandhi, Election Commission officials on Saturday once again pressed the Leader of the Opposition to either sign a declaration to support his claims or apologise to the country for making "fake" charges. A day after Gandhi and the EC exchanged barbs over alleged vote theft in at least three states, poll authority officials again insisted for a signed declaration by the Congress leader to substantiate his claims.
