CET: Fee payment directly from sponsor account made mandatory for NRI Ward candidates

The Hindu16-07-2025
To prevent misuse of the Non-Resident Indians (NRI) Ward category by professional course seat aspirants, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has issued a circular mandating payment of fees directly to KEA from the sponsor's account. This follows instances reported during the seat allotment process last year, where students tried to misuse the quota by submitting sponsorship from people who are not directly related to them.
To prevent such misuse and help genuine candidates who have blood relative sponsors, the KEA has issued a circular informing students and parents that for NRI ward sponsors, it is compulsory to transfer the sponsor amount from the sponsor's account directly to KEA.
'In case the candidate finds it difficult to transfer the amount immediately, then they can submit a Demand Draft (DD) for the same amount to KEA and get their admission order. The DD will be returned as soon as the sponsor transfers the amount,' it said.
This year, KEA has also made it mandatory for NRI ward quota claimers to get the family tree certified from respective tehsildars. Last year, KEA had received over 500 applications claiming seats under NRI ward, of which 320 were found eligible and during the second level of verification 14 candidates were found submitting fake documents to claim the quota.

Bengal BJP MPs to meet with Amit Shah on Monday

The Member of Parliament (MP) from the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will meet with Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday in Delhi. According to party sources, the Home Minister will chair a meeting with all the Bengal BJP MPs to strategize on countering the allegations raised by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Assembly. The TMC has been vocal about the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers and their pushback into Bangladesh. Additionally, TMC MPs have been holding protests on the Parliament premises regarding the implementation of the SIR (Special Investigation Report) in Bihar, which they oppose in West Bengal. The meeting will address these issues and discuss the counterstrategy for the BJP MPs. 'Tomorrow, we will have a meeting with the Home Minister. While it is strictly a party meeting, we will also address the RG Kar issue. The parents of the victim doctor have shared certain insights and provided us with documents that we will present. However, we cannot make any commitments as the CBI is currently investigating the matter,' stated BJP State President and MP Shamik Bhattacharya at the press conference. Bhattacharya further highlighted that another significant issue in Bengal is radicalization, especially in light of recent events in Bangladesh. There have been signs of unrest in several districts of West Bengal. Reports indicate that anti-social groups are establishing their modules, particularly in Cooch Behar, which raises concerns about the safety and security of the country. In both BJP-ruled and non-BJP-ruled states, the identity cards of migrant laborers are being scrutinized. During questioning, many have admitted to being from Bangladesh and have mentioned three locations in Bengal—Barasat, Madhyamgram, and Siliguri—where they obtained fake identity documents. Bhattacharya claimed that the livelihoods of migrant laborers from Bengal, who have gone to other states leaving their families behind, are being threatened by Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas. 'Even in Kolkata, there is a colony in Kasba known as Gulshan Colony. How did this colony come up suddenly? What about those living behind the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate? Can they provide any identification? The ruling government is pushing this state and its people toward danger. Our stance is very clear: only citizens of Bharat should reside here. Just as fake voters have been identified in Bihar, fake voters will also be identified here.' Meanwhile, according to sources within the TMC , Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting with Trinamool MPs on Monday. She is scheduled to conduct a virtual meeting at 4:30 PM, during which she will convey to the MPs what they should say in Parliament and what issues they should raise.

‘Illegal immigrants not welcome': Assam CM says 3 Bangladeshis pushed back at border

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said three Bangladeshi nationals were nabbed and pushed back along the international border in Sribhumi district. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X praising the Assam Police(ANI) "The tough act continues. In the wee hours today, 3 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were pushed back from Sribhumi," Sarma said in a post on X. Out of three foreign nationals, one is a woman, according to the picture shared with the post. "Illegal Immigrants are not welcome. Good job @assampolice," Sarma said. Assam's Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar districts share 267.5 km of international border with Bangladesh. There is an Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Sribhumi. Northeast has a total of three ICPs along India-Bangladesh border, and the other two are at Dawki in Meghalaya and Akhaura in Tripura. There is another ICP in the region at Darranga in Assam along the India-Bhutan border. Assam Police had earlier said that the state force and BSF would do everything possible to prevent any attempt by non-Indians to enter the country from Bangladesh as per the law after a political turmoil hit the neighbouring nation last year. However, all Indian passport holders would be allowed to return from trouble-hit Bangladesh through the entry point in the state.

Raj Thackeray Questions Dance Bars, Then Supporters Resort To Vandalism

Mumbai: Mob rule took over the streets in Maharashtra once again as Raj Thackeray's supporters vandalised a dance bar in Panvel near Mumbai late last night. The vandalism followed a fiery evening speech by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief against dance bars operating in the Raigad district. Videos showed over a dozen men armed with sticks walking up to the Night Riders bar and vandalising the property. They stormed inside and caused severe damage to the property, police said, adding that they damaged furniture and smashed liquor bottles. The interior was ransacked, tables were broken, and glasses were shattered, reports suggested citing social media videos. Mr Thackeray, who has repeatedly backed violence to push his Marathi pride cause, had said at a Kisan Mazdoor Party meeting in Panvel that Raigad was the capital of Emperor Shivaji Maharaj and dance bars should not operate there. "Raigad district has the most dance bars. They were closed, right? So many dance bars in Raigad, who owns them? Only Marathi people? So, if you are being evicted from here, then you are being trapped by making you habituated to dance bars. This is our Raigad. Raigad was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," said Mr Thackeray. His speech provoked MNS workers in Panvel, who turned aggressive and resorted to vandalism around midnight. The police said they have taken cognisance of the incident and started an investigation. They are now collecting CCTV footage and recording witness statements for further action. MNS leader Sandip Deshpande justified the action of party workers as a "symbolic protest". "This is a symbolic protest, the bars are illegal, that's why it had to be done immediately. The government should pay attention to this," said Mr Deshpande. Raj Thackeray's supporters had earlier been accused of assaulting and abusing non-Marathi people and forcing non-native speakers to speak the local language.
