Treasury tells why 8% service tax exempted to lease aircraft, ships
The aviation and maritime industries play an important role in the supply chain, tourism and economy, said the Treasury. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : The finance ministry has sought to clarify why it has exempted the leasing of aircraft and ships from the 8% service tax on commercial rental and leasing services. The Treasury said one key reason the exemption was given was to prevent the owners of aircraft and ships from registering them abroad. Allowing that to happen would lead to a decrease in economic and tourism activity in Malaysia, it said in a statement. It said another reason was that other neighbouring countries do not impose a service tax on these leasing services. 'Without the exemption, customers may opt for aircraft and ship leasing services overseas instead,' it said. The ministry also denied that the exemption was done discreetly, saying an official notification was uploaded on the customs department's MySST portal on July 24. 'This exemption is specifically for the aviation and maritime industries, which play an important role in the supply chain, tourism, and economy. 'It does not apply to vehicle rentals such as cars, buses, or business premises, which differ in terms of the way they are used,' it added. The 8% service tax on rental and leasing services, which came into force from July 1, applies to service providers whose rental or lease income exceeds RM1 million. Lessees that are micro, small and medium-sized enterprises with annual sales of less than RM500,000 are exempted.

Tabung Haji denies setting aside RM20mil for rebranding
Lembaga Tabung Haji said it is inaccurate to state that the fund does not need to strengthen its branding just because it is well known after 60 years in operation. PETALING JAYA : Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has rubbished claims that it has set aside some RM20 million to be spent on a rebranding exercise for the pilgrim fund. TH said such claims were untrue and slanderous, as it had only allocated a total of RM6 million for a brand rejuvenation exercise over a three-year period. In a statement today, the board also said it is inaccurate to say that Tabung Haji does not need to strengthen its branding just because it is well-known after 60 years in operation. 'TH has embarked on branding strengthening exercises several times prior to this, and these are important investments to change mindsets and attract the interests of Muslims to save systemically so that they can perform the haj. 'TH's board of directors decided to review its strategies to remain competitive in offering the best services and attract more young Malaysian Muslims as depositors,' it said. TH said the RM6 million allocated would involve extensive market research and engagements with depositors to better understand their needs. It pointed out that it only had 9.6 million depositors today, or half the Malaysian Muslim population. It also said 53% of depositors have less than RM1,300 saved, far below what was needed to perform the haj. Earlier this week, PAS's Pengkalan Chepa MP Ahmad Marzuk Shaary claimed that three firms have been appointed to help with TH's purported rebranding exercise. He said this would involve RM20 million in TH funds.
