Milkshakes bringing customers to Indianapolis stores. Desserts shops opening this summer
Cool sweet treats shops are opening in the area just in time for rising temperatures.
MilkShake Factory is opening a couple of Indianapolis-area stores this summer.
One in Nora opens in June. Another, in Avon, follows this July.
The brand offers a range of handspun gourmet milkshake flavors, as well as limited-time options, sundaes, small-batch chocolates and non-dairy shakes.
The 1300 E. 86th St. store in Nora and the Avon shop, at 8932 E. Highway 36 will be among the first 20 franchised locations in the system.
The first MilkShake Factory opened in 2003 in Pittsburgh. The family-owned company evolved from a soda fountain and chocolate shop opened in 1914.
The team behind the local stores, North Carolina residents Kindall Palmer and Alex Chandler, plan to build more in the area.
They currently operate a location in Durham, opened last summer, and another which opened in the Raleigh suburb of Cary in February.
The pair, who met as business students at the University of Utah, can open up to 15 locations total between the two metropolitan areas. Four of them will be in the Indianapolis area.
'You can get milkshakes at a lot of different places, but most places where you get them, it's kind of just an afterthought or a little side thing that they do; so that quality and dedication is not always there,' Chandler said. 'When you sip a MilkShake Factory milkshake, you're tasting that difference, because this is what we do. We focus solely on this; so there's a high degree of quality and perfection that goes into it.'
Ice cream for the vanilla milkshake base is made in store daily using an exclusive recipe.
Among flavors are Chocolate Dipped Strawberry and Campfire S'mores.
The chain recently debuted the Chocolate Cake Shake and handcrafted Chocolate Cake Pop for a limited time. The shake combines chocolate cake with house-made chocolate sauce, chocolate ice cream and milk, topped with whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and a cake pop garnish. The cake pops are dipped in MilkShake Factory's signature chocolate and hand-decorated in-store.
Chandler learned about MilkShake Factory through social media, and on a trip Pittsburgh for a wedding, he took in the flagship store downtown.
'The first thing that strikes you walking in is just how gorgeous of a space it is. It's a very modern take with kind of this iconic throwback to the old soda fountains of like the 50s and 60s that previous generations would hang out at and get a sweet treat. It's got that feel to it, but kind of in a modern way. So it's a very clean and vibrant store,' Chandler said.
There are about 18 locations in seven states. All of MilkShake Factory's Pittsburgh locations are corporate-owned. The Indianapolis shops are among 12 underway.
Chandler has experience in selling treats and getting in early on franchises. He has about 10 Crumbl locations in the Detroit, Michigan, area. He joined that company in 2020 when Crumbl had only about 60 stores.
"So anything with sugar, we'll sell it," he said. "We like the sweet tooth, so it makes it fun."
Story continues below gallery.
Since the brand has its genesis in chocolate, it makes sense to find a chocolate bar near the store entrance.
Each milkshake is topped with a triangle of chocolate made from the family recipe.
There'll be seating for about 12 inside each store, which will have 15-20 workers each. The patio in Nora will seat 20.
Demand has already shown itself with folks trying to get in the doors weeks ahead of the openings, Palmer said.
'At both locations, Avon and Nora, we get knocks all the time, like, 'Hey, where's my milkshake?'' he said.

‘Its corruption' PA Rep. aims to block $TRUMP, other crypto deals for public officials
PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A Pennsylvania Representative is attempting to block President Donald Trump-style cryptocurrency from being used by public officials. In January 2025, days before being sworn in, Trump launched a cryptocurrency called '$TRUMP,' which is currently worth $10.74 per stock. The currency was marketed as a 'meme coin,' with no real utility and no 'regulatory oversight,' according to Representative Ben Waxman (D-Philadelphia). Waxman argued in his latest legislation that the $TRUMP currency is 'corruption, plain and simple.' $TRUMP coin is described as a cryptocurrency supporting the Trump administration and its 'conservative followers and Patriots,' according to In May, Trump held a contest for coin buyers, awarding the top 220 holders of the meme coin the opportunity to go to a dinner at Trump's Washington-area golf club. The top 25 holders also got to attend a reception as well, according to the Associated Press. Waxman argued that as the coin gains momentum, Trump then benefits financially either directly through ownership of large reserves or indirectly via related entities and promotional deals. Then, Trump pushes to roll back federal oversight of crypto markets, and in doing so, Waxman wrote that it shields Trump's own schemes from 'scrutiny.' The legislation aims to prohibit elected officials from profiting off cryptocurrency while in office. This would include launching, promoting or trading coins where they hold a personal financial interest. Waxman added that public service must 'never be a get-rich-quick scheme.' 'Chow mein is back, baby': Fall River's Oriental Chow Mein factory up and running again
FALL RIVER — While no easy feat for Fall Riverites, you made it through no-chow-mein May. Pat yourselves on the back and celebrate at your favorite local chow mein go-to because this week the region has been blessed with an early Christmas miracle: the temporary noodle drought is finally over, and Oriental Chow Mein Co. has reopened. The noodle machine at the city's landmark Oriental Chow Mein had been out of operation since early May, sending Fall River-area restaurants into a brief panic as they pulled chow mein dishes off their menu with the loss of their noodle supplier. Fall River chow mein factory: No more noodles until further notice But rabid fans — forced to get by without Oriental's famous at-home Hoo-Mee Chow Mein mix — can breathe easy now. The machine got back up and running June 3, and Oriental Chow Mein Co.'s 42 Eighth St. facility has been a flurry of activity since. On the morning of June 5, a steady flow of customers were in and out of the shop, seeking the only cure for their chow mein withdrawals leaving the business with bags of noodles in hand. According to Nelson Wong, whose family has run Oriental for nearly eight decades, restaurants have also been running them ragged with orders as patrons not-so-patiently await the return of the iconic chow mein sandwich, a dish made famous in Fall River and now popular well beyond. 'Last hurrah': Why customers loved the iconic Fall River restaurant Mee Sum Roger's Family Restaurant in Somerset shared via a June 4 post, 'Breaking news…….. Chow Mein is back, baby! Come & get it!!!!!!' which caught the eye of 500 happy customers on Facebook and counting. They were one of many restaurants forced to temporarily drop their well-known chow mein sandwich from their menu. Others, such as Mr. Chen at their 210 Rhode Island Ave., Fall River, have experimented with making their own noodles in house in the interim. This recent shutdown marks the second noodle crisis Oriental Chow Mein fans have faced. In 2009, a fire at the Eighth Street factory forced them to close for six months. Those currently stocking up in the event of another unforeseen noodle shortage were offered some words of advice from Wong. 'Keep them in the freezer. That's the best place to keep it,' he said on June 5. This article originally appeared on The Herald News: Oriental Chow Mein open: Fall River noodle factory back after closure
