On the block: 20 acres in New Town for residential and commercial use
2
Kolkata: Bengal govt will unlock around 20 acres – the size of 20 football fields – in New Town Action Area II and III for residential, commercial and mixed-use purposes. HIDCO will allot the land parcels on a freehold basis through e-auction next month.
Two plots of 4.1 acre each in Action Area II and three plots measuring 7.3 acres, 3.2 acres, and 0.6 acres in Action Area III have been identified for development. The starting bid price for the largest land parcel of 7.3 acre has been fixed at Rs 292.2 crore while that for the smallest of 0.6 acre has been kept at Rs 26 crore.
Govt officials said New Town was being developed with a planned population of 10 lakh. With Action Area I and parts of Action Area II already developed, the focus was now on the rest of Action Area II and Action Area III.

The average cost of plots earmarked for mixed-use in Rajarhat-New Town is Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore per acre depending on its position and proximity to the main arterial roads. It was decided a few years back that all plots in the township would be sold only through commercial bidding.
"New Town is planned on about 7,598 acres of land on the north-eastern fringes of Kolkata and is fast emerging as one of the country's fastest-growing planned cities.

It is situated 10 km from Kolkata's central business district, adjacent to Salt Lake and close to the airport. Around 12,000 dwelling units have already been constructed in the township, and another 16,000 units are coming up. The township is expected to have around two lakh dwelling units catering to housing needs in the near future," an official said.
Welcoming the decision, New Town Citizens Welfare Fraternity secretary Samir Gupta said, "The more residential and commercial housing comes up, the better it will be for the township's overall development.
The authorities should also look to improve civic infrastructure, especially in Action Area III, and should consider exploring the monorail option, which was proposed earlier to connect Action Area III with Biswa Bangla Sarani.
"
Samaresh Das of New Town forum said, "So far, most development in New Town has happened in Action Area I. It is good that more housing will come up with a focus on Action Area III, where IT giants are setting up their offices. This will help in the all-round development of the township."

Indian stock markets end week lower amid trade deal concerns, profit booking
The Indian equity markets closed lower for the week as investors turned cautious ahead of the crucial July 9 US-India trade deadline and the start of the corporate earnings season, experts said on Saturday. Both benchmark indices -- the Sensex and the Nifty -- slipped 0.7 per cent each on a weekly basis, as broader market sentiment remained clouded by global uncertainty and profit booking after the recent rally. The Nifty ended the week at 25,461, while the Sensex closed at 83,432.89. The indices had started the week with a strong breakout, but the momentum faded amid concerns over a possible delay in finalising trade agreements. However, reports suggesting an interim deal between India and the US helped limit the downside in the latter half of the week. According to Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking Limited, the pullback was largely driven by investors booking profits following recent gains. 'The cautious tone was evident with the looming trade deadline. However, optimism around a potential agreement between India and the US acted as a cushion,' he noted. India's fiscal health remained strong, supported by a robust Rs 2.69 lakh crore dividend transfer from the RBI, which helped contain the fiscal deficit at just 0.8 per cent of the annual target. June GST collections also remained firm, rising 6.2 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 1.84 lakh crore. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said, 'The week saw some consolidation after sharp gains in previous sessions. Global cues remained mixed, and investors preferred to stay on the sidelines ahead of the US tariff decision." 'FIIs turned cautious due to high valuations, but support from DIIs kept the market from falling sharply,' Nair mentioned. From a sectoral perspective, defensive sectors like IT and healthcare outperformed, supported by stock-specific action and stable demand. Meanwhile, rate-sensitive sectors such as banking, auto, and realty witnessed pressure from profit booking. FMCG stocks also edged lower. Defence stocks, however, saw strong buying after the government cleared several high-value contracts. Technically, the market entered a consolidation phase. Bajaj Broking Research noted that the Nifty has formed a small bear candle with a higher high and low on the weekly chart, signalling consolidation amid stock specific action after the recent strong upward move. 'Key support levels are seen around 25,150–25,200, coinciding with the 20-day exponential moving average, while resistance is expected near the 25,600–25,740 zone,' according to Angel One. 'A breakout above this range could trigger the next leg of the rally,' the brokerage added.

Punjab: Mann govt to pass law against sacrilege in assembly session
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], July 5 (ANI): The Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government on Saturday decided to introduce and pass a law against sacrilege during a special session of the state legislative assembly scheduled for July 10 and 11. This move marks a major step toward fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Punjab for stricter laws to address sacrilege cases in the state. The announcement came from the state government, describing the upcoming assembly session as 'historic for Punjab.' Officials confirmed that the government will present a new legislation aimed at curbing acts of sacrilege and ensuring strict punishment for those involved in hurting religious sentiments. The official added that the Mann government will fulfil the demand of the people of Punjab. Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann, along with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, on Tuesday announced the launch of the 'Fast Track Punjab Portal'. The portal aims to simplify the process of starting new businesses, setting up projects, and expanding industries in the state. Addressing a gathering in Mohali, Kejriwal said the initiative is unprecedented in India and reflects his government's distinct policy approach, which is different from the prevailing national politics. 'When Bhagwant Mann and I visited Punjab, we met traders and received their proposals. After listening and understanding their concerns, we made this decision. We want traders who left Punjab to return and work here. Our intent is clear, and that's why we are making this announcement. Our government's policy is entirely different from the current politics of the country,' Kejriwal said. He stressed the need for a business-friendly environment in which industrialists can focus 90 per cent of their time on business growth rather than running around government offices. Describing the portal as a historic step, Kejriwal said, 'No government in any state has made such announcements until today. Starting a new business, setting up a project, or expanding an industry in Punjab has now become extremely easy. Just apply on the Invest Punjab Portal, and all approvals will be granted within 45 days. For projects up to Rs. 125 crore, approvals will be given in just three days. No running around, no delays, no corruption. Punjab is ready for your industry's new journey.' (ANI)
