There's a 'new' centre-back at Liverpool and he looks special. Right now everyone is desperate for the Reds to add at least another defender to their ranks. For most of the summer, Arne Slot has had to field makeshift centre-back, most notably Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. With Jarell Quansah having departed, and Joe Gomez injured, Liverpool have had to compete with just two senior centre-backs in their ranks. This is something that is simply not sustainable. Liverpool need more options and depth in order to be able to challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League. The hope is that Richard Hughes will accelerate a move for one of the club's targets. Whether that is Marc Guehi or Giovanni Leoni remains to be seen. In the meantime though, pre-season has unleashed a 'new' centre-back at the club as well, who looked special in the role when being asked to play there. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range We're talking about Trey Nyoni here. Liverpool signed him as a holding midfielder back in 2023, but he had played as a centre-back before in his academy days. At Liverpool, even at academy level, we haven't seen him play there. He's been deployed as a midfielder, which is clearly his preferred position. However, it was interesting to see him being fielded as a centre-back against Athletic Bilbao on Monday night. Initially, there was a bit of trepidation whether he would be able to cope with the demands of the role, however, Nyoni quashed any doubts aside from the first minute. He put in a commanding centre-back performance, making the most clearances in the match (4) and winning a couple of aerial duels as well. Despite his slender frame he dealt with the physical challenges of the role really well, and he read situations astutely, making four interceptions and a brilliant intervention when Bilbao were clean through on goal and had only him and Freddie Woodman to beat, making it a two on two but really a two on one defensive situation for Nyoni. The way he dealt with the challenge gives food for thought for Slot. In this Liverpool team right now there already are a plethora of midfielders, making the pathway into the first team a difficult one for Nyoni. But what if he can now also not only provide an option in midfield but in defence as well? What if he can become Liverpool's 'new' centre-back? Based on the evidence of this one game, it certainly seems like an option and if that's the case the pathway for him to get more minutes in the first team opens up straightaway. Obviously, Liverpool would need another centre-back option, someone like Guehi. However, Nyoni has definitely proven he can provide depth there, and in turn become one of the 'new' centre-backs Liverpool are desperately lacking.

In a recent report, L'Equipe claimed that Liverpool are eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola this summer. It has been mentioned that the Reds are showing interest in recruiting the French attacker this off-season. Barcola's Excellent Record In French Football Barcola had a productive campaign at the French club after he produced a run of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 22-year-old banged in 21 goals and picked up 21 assists in 64 matches for PSG last season in all competitions. The Lyon-born talent gave a good account of himself in the opponent's half as he averaged 3.05 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He kept 51.4% of his attempts on target. Barcola was even accurate when distributing possession, based on his pass success rate of 81.7% in top-flight football (stats via His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2028. Therefore, Liverpool would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting the French attacker this off-season. (Photo by) What Will Barcola Bring To Liverpool? Barcola is a great dribbler with the ball and can make a few driving runs with it out on the flanks. He has got the eye to play some killer passes on the offensive end of the field and can strike the ball with venom from long range. The French talent is primarily a left-winger but can also operate as a right-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if needed. However, there are some concerns over whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Reds manage to sign him in this transfer window. Barcola would bring plenty of goals and assists to Liverpool boss Arne Slot's defence. He is good enough to nail down a regular starting place at Anfield as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in England. At 22, Barcola has the potential to be a generational talent at the Merseyside club. Furthermore, he would serve as an ideal replacement for Luis Diaz, who joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer. Thus, Slot should focus on getting a deal over the line for Barcola before the end of this transfer period.

LIV Golf: Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood among notable names facing potential relegation
For the last four seasons, LIV Golf has served, in part, as the greatest late-career victory lap in sports history. Fortysomething golf legends whose best days came in the late 2000s and early 2010s earned tens of millions for three days' worth of work a dozen or so times a year, regardless of how well they performed. But it's a new era in LIV Golf, and that means the avalanche of cash without conditions is ending. With two individual tournaments remaining, including this weekend's Chicago event, some notable names are right on LIV's cut line … and this year, LIV Golf apparently really, really plans to cut them loose. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The LIV Golf tour includes 56 players, and at the end of the season, anyone ranked below 48th is 'relegated.' (That's LIV's term, although unlike in, say, English Premier League soccer, there's no lower LIV tour for 'relegated' players.) Relegated players will lose their full-time slot for the 2026 season, though they will have the opportunity to play their way back onto the tour. It all sounds properly meritocratic, unlike the no-cut format of LIV's weekly events. But last year, Bubba Watson and Branden Grace both ended the season below the cut line … and yet somehow managed to stay on rosters for this season. Both are safe this season because of some top-5 finishes, but the fact that they're still in the mix at all given the supposed finality of the 'cut zone' is enough to raise questions. This year, though, there apparently may not be the same wiggle room. Notable players below the cut line include Ian Poulter, Mito Pereira and wild card Anthony Kim, while Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson are ranked 46th and 47th, respectively. The Telegraph reported that players have been informed that there will be no Bubba-esque leniency this year; cut means cut. It's likely no coincidence that this hard line comes as LIV Golf is reapplying for Official World Golf Ranking points. The intractability of LIV's player movement — if there's no cut and no chance of losing your playing slot, there's no risk — was a key reason for the OWGR's rejection of LIV's prior application for ranking points. The OWGR provides a pathway for players to play their way into the majors; LIV players have no such pathway on the LIV tour. (LIV Golf did not answer Yahoo Sports inquiries about the new cut-line stance or its relationship to the OWGR application, but provided a breakdown of players at risk.) Poulter and several other notable names are believed to be in the final year of their initial LIV contracts, which apparently paid them tens of millions of dollars — LIV does not disclose contract specifics — and have made several million more in tournament purses since joining the league in 2022. If they are cut from LIV, Poulter, Stenson, Westwood and others could potentially return to play on the DP World Tour, providing they pay the fines — some in the million-dollar range — that the tour has levied on them. That might be the only way that the European notables, once locks for the Ryder Cup captaincy slot, could work their way back into establishment golf's good graces.
