Heart and Stroke Foundation hosts free screening
SHOPPERS at Montclair Mall received more than a dose of retail therapy on April 30, when the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) brought its free community health screening programme to the centre in a bid to raise awareness of cardiovascular health.

The outreach formed part of the foundation's mission to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in South Africa through education, screening and referral. Sister Juandre Watson from the HSFSA said the public welcomed the initiative.
The free services offered included blood pressure screenings, blood glucose and cholesterol tests and body mass index assessments. Additionally, medical examinations and women's health screening were offered to identify other risk factors that may lead to heart disease or stroke.
'We were pleased to have seen so many clients and were able to refer quite a number of these clients for high-risk values. We also provided advice on healthy behaviours that ensure long-term good health,' said Watson.
The HSFSA continues to advocate early detection and lifestyle change to combat heart disease, one of the globe's largest killers. The organisation encourages the public to attend similar screenings and take early action towards a healthier tomorrow.

Sapphire Coast photographers visit ocean rescue facility in Rocky Bay [Pics]
THE Sapphire Coast Camera Club ventured off to Rocky Bay to visit NPO, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), on May 17. The exciting and informative outing saw the shutter-happy photographers learn about what NSRI does, how the organisation operates, and what its focus is on. It carries out rescue operations, educates communities and works to prevent drownings. It works on a volunteer-basis and volunteers are on call 24/7. NSRI is reliant on donations and sponsorships. Wynand Grobler, chairperson of the camera club, said, 'The camera club met the NSRI members at Station 39, Rocky Bay, where they taught us about what they do and showed videos of past rescues. Thereafter, we were able to watch their boat go out. It was an eye-opener to see what they can do and to think that all the NSRI members are all volunteers. We were able to make some good photographs. It was a fun day for us all.' For the early-risers in the club, it was a perfect start, capturing a spectacular sunrise from the beach. Thereafter the group met with Helen Wienand and station commander Kevin Fourie for an in-depth tour of the rescue base, the vessels and safety equipment. NSRI guest speaker Helen Wienand said, 'The close-up views afforded the photographers with plenty of opportunity for creative shots, however, the highlight of the morning was watching the crew ready the Jetrib for training. The visitors were treated to a full display of the Jetribs' capabilities in the surf, resulting in fabulous action photos. It is always special for our volunteers to have an opportunity to meet and interact with the residents who live near the rescue base and support us. We invite clubs and societies to reach out and visit us at our NSRI rescue stations and see what we do.' Woman delivers bundle of joy at baby shower in uMhlanga
A CELEBRATORY baby shower for a mother-to-be took an unexpected turn on Friday evening in uMhlanga after she went into labour. Paramedics from KZN VIP Medical responded to the incident at a restaurant at a popular mall on Lagoon Drive to find that the woman's family as well as staff and bystanders had helped deliver the baby girl weighing 3kg. The delivery process was completed by paramedics – when they arrived on scene the baby was still attached by the umbilical chord. Also read: Glen Hills baby home appeals for donations 'Reports indicated that a woman had gone into labour during a baby shower celebration hosted by her family. Our medics found that the baby had already been delivered. Maternity care protocols were initiated to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and child,' explained KZN VIP Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Naidoo. 'We are pleased to report that a healthy baby girl was born, and both mother and baby were stable. They were transported to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation and care,' he said. Naidoo commended the paramedics for their swift response to the incident. It is believed the mother was from Mtunzini and was celebrating with family in uMhlanga.
