BJD, Cong stir against ‘rise' in crimes against women; BJP hits back
Bhubaneswar: Opposition
BJD
and Congress on Wednesday staged separate demonstrations, protesting against alleged rise in crimes against women. Members of Youth Congress attempted to gherao chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi's residence, leading to a scuffle with police.
When cops stopped the Congress members on the AG Square-Raj Bhavan route, preventing their approach towards the CM's residence, the protesters hurled eggs and tomatoes.
"Law and order has collapsed in the state. The recent Gopalpur beach and Keonjhar gang rapes, and inhumane assault on two dalits in Ganjam speak volumes of the state's lawlessness. We demand the chief minister's resignation," said Ranjit Patra, president of Odisha Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC).
The party's national functionaries, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, earlier took to social media, slamming the state govt over the recent gang rape and dalit assault cases.
BJD's youth and student wings organised protests outside various educational institutes across the state against the alleged increase in cases of crimes against women. BJD members alleged the state govt has failed to ensure safety of women.

"Today, Odisha has become the most unsafe place for women with incidents of rape, murder, kidnapping and other crimes soaring," BJD MLA and youth wing state president Byomakesh Ray said.
BJP hit back at the allegations and said the law and order situation during the tenures of Congress and BJD govts was worrisome and alarming. "Many sensational rape, murder and rape and murder cases occurred under the Congress and BJD govts.
While their govts sat silent, our govt is taking stern measures against criminals. Our govt has a zero tolerance policy against crimes and criminals," Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) state unit president Abhilash Panda said.
Odisha police data revealed that crimes against women decreased by 2.5% over 10 months from June 2024 to April 2025 compared to June 2023 to April 2024. Altogether 28,800 crimes against women were reported during June 2024 to April 2025, compared to 29,539 cases between June 2023 and April 2024, data showed.

Cong chief takes jibe at Tharoor over PM praise
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday took a swipe at party colleague Shashi Tharoor over the latter's recent praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that his party believed in 'country first' but it was 'Modi first and country later' for 'some people'. Kharge's remarks came days after Tharoor in a newspaper article on Monday said PM Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remained a 'prime asset' for India on the global stage but deserved greater backing. (ANI) Kharge's remarks came days after Tharoor in a newspaper article on Monday said PM Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remained a 'prime asset' for India on the global stage but deserved greater backing. 'I can't read English well. His (Tharoor's) language is very good, that's why we have made him a Congress Working Committee (party's apex body) member,' the Congress chief told reporters, when asked about Tharoor's article. Over the last few months, Tharoor has repeatedly defied party lines to back the PM Modi-led government on key policy issues. He has often drawn criticism from his party and jibes aimed at him by Congress leaders for his stand. In his article earlier this week, Tharoor said the diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor — India's military action on terror infrastructure in Pakistan in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives — was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. The Congress distanced itself from Tharoor's remarks, dubbing them as the party MP's personal opinion. However, Kharge's snipe at Tharoor, who had contested against the former in the Congress presidential polls in 2022, indicate the party will not tolerate such deviations from its senior lawmaker, who is also a former Union minister, CWC member and a chairman of the external affairs committee of Parliament. Kharge further recalled the Opposition's united support to the government and the armed forces in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. 'We (the Congress) said 'country first, party later'. Some people say 'Modi first, country later'. What can we do?' he added. Hours after Kharge's remarks, Tharoor put out a cryptic post on X. He posted a picture of a bird with the caption: 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one.'

‘Finally Wears A Suit…': Zelenskyy Sparks Meme Fest After Ditching Combat Look At NATO
Last Updated: Zelenskyy appeared wearing a black suit-style jacket and shirt at the royal dinner hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima at the royal palace in Den Bosch. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sparked a meme fest on social media platforms after he appeared at the NATO summit in The Hague wearing a black suit-style jacket and shirt- a noticeable departure from his wartime wardrobe. Often seen at major events in his military-style outfit, the Ukrainian leader marked a subtle shift in visual tone from his usual combat gear to something more diplomatically formal, months after he was publicly ridiculed during a tense Oval Office meeting with US President Donald Trump for not wearing a suit. Zelenskyy appeared wearing a black suit-style jacket and shirt at the royal dinner hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima at the royal palace in Den Bosch. The formal dinner was attended by heads of state and top defence delegations, among others. Recent photos and videos of the Ukrainian leader wearing a tailored black suit quickly went viral, prompting a resurgence of debate about the symbolic meaning of clothing. 'Zelensky is capable of wearing a suit. Not at the White House or the Congress, but for his benefactors in Europe," a netizen commented. Another one quipped, 'Zelensky finally wears a suit at the Hague so he can ask Trump for more money." One user even pointed out that Ukraine President was 'withholding the tie." Zelenskyy, visibly annoyed, responded sharply, 'I will wear costume after this war finishes. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better." (In Ukrainian, 'kostyum" refers to a suit.) Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Zelenskyy has been seen in military-style gear- sweatshirts, field jackets, cargo pants- to project solidarity with troops on the front lines. Even during diplomatic visits abroad, including meetings with Pope Francis and world leaders like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelenskyy has kept to that dress code. Ecuador's most notorious drug lord, Interpol-wanted gang leader ‘Fito' recaptured after year-long manhunt
Ecuador's most notorious drug lord 'Fito' recaptured after year-long manhunt ( Image credit: AP) Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced on Wednesday the recapture of José Adolfo Macías, alias 'Fito,' the country's most wanted fugitive and leader of the criminal gang 'Los Choneros'. Macías was apprehended in his hometown of Manta, in what authorities described as a covert basement hideout beneath a kitchen counter. At the time of his escape, Macías was serving a 34-year sentence for homicide and drug trafficking. His disappearance triggered a violent ripple across Ecuador, pushing the government to declare an internal armed conflict and classify Los Choneros alongside 21 other criminal groups as terrorist organizations. Interpol issued an international arrest warrant shortly after his escape, which baffled authorities. Officials only discovered he was missing when a military unit arrived to transfer him to a higher-security facility, only to find his prison cell empty. The circumstances surrounding his flight remain under investigation. Macías' capture comes just days after another prison escape made headlines, this time involving Federico Gómez, alias 'Fede,' leader of the rival gang Las Aguilas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The timing has once again spotlighted Ecuador's deepening security crisis. The US government has been closely watching Macías and Los Choneros. In February 2024, the Treasury Department sanctioned both, citing their violent activities and transnational drug trafficking operations. A seven-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn accuses Macías of smuggling thousands of pounds of cocaine into the United States, as well as conspiracy and firearms trafficking. According to the indictment, Los Choneros maintained a vast distribution network, funneling cocaine from South America through Central America and Mexico into the US, with support from powerful Mexican cartels. The gang is also accused of using operatives in the US to illegally purchase firearms and ammunition and smuggle them into Ecuador. US Attorney John Durham previously described Macías as the head of a 'network of assassins and traffickers.' Despite being behind bars for much of his reign, Macías maintained influence and even notoriety, releasing videos flanked by armed men, throwing prison parties, and flaunting access to contraband luxuries. Now back in custody, Macías may soon be extradited to the United States. President Noboa confirmed Ecuador is awaiting a response from US officials regarding the request.
