Eddie Howe admits he is not in ‘full control' of Alexander Isak's future

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted that he is not in 'full control' over Alexander Isak's future. Isak has been heavily linked with Liverpool after it was reported the 25-year-old was keen to explore a move away from Newcastle. Advertisement The Sweden striker still has three years left on his contract at Newcastle, who he joined in the summer of 2022 from Spanish side Real Sociedad, but has been absent from the club's pre-season tour of the Far East. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says Alexander Isak's future is out of his hands (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'He is still our player. He's contracted to us,' Howe said at a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. 'My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. Advertisement 'We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year.' Liverpool are expected to step up in their interest in Isak – who scored 23 goals last season as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League – with their Colombia forward Luis Diaz on the brink of joining Bayern Munich.

PREVIEW Visa, Mastercard set for higher profits on solid spending trends

July 29 (Reuters) - Visa (V.N), opens new tab and Mastercard (MA.N), opens new tab are expected to report higher quarterly profits this week on steady consumer spending, and analysts will scrutinize how demand for travel and discretionary purchases is shaping up in the face of tariff uncertainty. The results from the world's biggest payment processors will help flesh out the broader financial outlook that major banks such as JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), opens new tab and Wells Fargo (WFC.N), opens new tab presented earlier this month, signaling a resilient consumer. "Visa and Mastercard remain top ideas, particularly in an uncertain macro environment, given their broad-based exposure to discretionary and non-discretionary spend, geographic reach, and proven ability to stabilize their expense increase in downturns," Oppenheimer analysts said in a note. Billions of people worldwide use Visa and Mastercard for their everyday spending and other purchases, making the card networks better equipped to weather downturns. They also have more expense flexibility to support profit growth. In recent years, the companies have diversified their business model by building out value-added services such as threat intelligence and fraud reduction. Still, some analysts expect a potential spending slowdown in the back half of 2025. Cross-border travel, a high-margin business for payments companies, has come under some pressure due to trade tensions and geopolitical risks. Slower travel from Canada to the U.S. and fresh tensions in the Middle East in June have raised concerns over a potential drag on growth. Analysts will also examine whether elevated volumes are being driven by a pull-forward in spending, as consumers pre-purchase goods they expect to get costlier after tariffs are imposed. In the second quarter, total card spending volumes modestly increased across bank issuers. Across credit and debit cards, Bank of America (BAC.N), opens new tab showed an increase of 110 basis points, while JPMorgan Chase showed a 40 bps rise, according to data compiled by RBC Capital Markets. "On balance and relative to expectations, data seems neutral for the networks and acquirers, considering overall spending trends appear at least stable compared to last quarter's growth, which we think should be good enough considering the macroeconomic volatility since last quarter's earnings," J.P. Morgan analysts said in a note. Investors will also zero in on the forecast around stablecoins. While both the card giants plan to launch products linked to the cryptocurrency, the recent passing of the Genius Act has raised some concern that stablecoins could eliminate the need for payment intermediaries in the long term. Visa, the larger of the two by market value, will announce quarterly results after markets close on Tuesday, while Mastercard will report on Thursday. American Express (AXP.N), opens new tab surpassed quarterly profit expectations earlier this month, helped by resilient spending by its affluent customer base. Visa and Mastercard shares have gained nearly 13% and 8% year-to-date as of Friday's close, respectively, while the benchmark S&P 500 index (.SPX), opens new tab has gained 8.6%. Adam says Rangers squad 'not ready yet' as he backs loan move for Moore

Charlie Adam insists that Rangers fans are right to be optimistic about the season ahead, but hebelieves that Russell Martin still has work to do to get his squad ready to compete for trophies this season. The new head coach got his reign off to a flying start with a 2-0 win over Panathinaikos in Glasgow last week, but they still have to come through a tough test in Athens on Wednesday to keep their Champions League dream alive. Seven new signings have been brought in to Ibrox this summer, and Tottenham teenager Mikey Moore is the latest name to be linked with a loan move. Martin stressed last week that his squad would look different at the end of August and Adam, who played for Rangers between 2003 and 2009, believes the next few weeks will be crucial off the park. Speaking at a William Hill SPFL season launch event, he said: 'This squad's not ready yet. 'There will be another three or four players added by the end of the window, and that's where you'll then start to judge it. Unfortunately, the games come quickly in terms of Europe. 'Like Russell said before, this squad will be totally different from now than it will be at the end of the window. 'He'll have to navigate his way through these games at the moment to get performances, but also get results because ultimately they want to be in the Champions League, and that's obviously where everybody wants to play. 'If they can get through this Panathinaikos game, then it will give them more money to spend on different types of players and be able to recruit better quality players.' When asked if Rangers fans should be optimistic about the season ahead, Adam said: 'Absolutely, absolutely. There's a plan, there's a strategy inside the football club at the moment that's aligned, and that's important when new investors come in. 'But there's a lot of building work in terms of bringing Kevin Thelwell in, who I know from Everton. He's done some good business within a tough period at Everton through the financial problems that they had. 'He's got good experience in English football, he's got good contacts abroad from where he's worked as well. 'Dan Purdy's coming in as head of recruitment, which is good. And they've brought a manager in who has the style and the right personality to be a Rangers manager. So I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.' Moore: 'He's a young player who has burst onto the scene at Spurs, can score a goal, and is a talented player, he's coming from a big club, it's a big loan move for his first opportunity to come and play. 'He's a talented player, who Tottenham obviously rate, and he's been through the England setup, so he's a talented player who will help the group.' Adam believes his former Stoke team-mate Jack Butland will be a key player in Athens on Wednesday. 'The conditions will be different, it'll be hot and it'll be humid so again Rangers will look to try and keep the ball if they can,' he said. 'Of course Panathinaikos can cause you problems. There were moments in the first leg that were nervy but they come through that period and they need their goalkeeper. 'He looks like he's back to good form and he's got confidence. I know him, I've played with him so it's good to see him playing well again and they're going to need him in the second leg. 'So if Rangers could start the game well and maybe nick a goal early it would really settle the game down, but again they're all tough games away from home.'
