Court shown footage of alleged Hainault sword attacker unboxing samurai weapon
Police have released video footage of the alleged killer of a 14-year-old boy unboxing a samurai sword and calling the weapon "freaking sexy". Marcus Monzo, 37, denies murdering teenager Daniel Anjorin and attempting to kill four others during a 20-minute rampage in Hainault, east London, on 30 April last year. Jurors at the Old Bailey have been shown a four-minute video clip from 4 April, which was recovered from his iPhone after his arrest. The Spanish-Brazilian national, from Newham in east London, appears to be reviewing a sword he says was "handmade in Japan" and "took more than a month to reach me". Dressed in a yellow hoodie, black shorts, toe socks and flipflops, and wearing headphones, he is standing on black mats next to a ginger cat he calls the "Wizard". A martial arts-style punching bag and another sword on a skateboard can be seen in the background. "This just came through… Ninja stuff," he says before opening a long box containing a sword. "So I'm sort of obliged to do some ninja stuff with the Wizard." Monzo also says "freaking sexy" and "ooh" as he lunges and makes different moves with the sheathed sword. The court has previously heard Monzo was a "talented martial artist". Prosecutors said he "killed and skinned" his cat before driving his grey Ford Transit van at speed into pedestrian Donato Iwule. He then struck him in the neck with the same weapon used to kill Daniel, who suffered "essentially a near-decapitation", the jury was earlier told. PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield was also repeatedly struck with the 60cm blade, before Monzo entered a nearby house and attacked a couple inside, then struck another police officer, it is alleged. Monzo has pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing an offensive weapon - a katana sword and a tanto katana sword. He denies charges of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. But prosecutors say his psychotic state was self-induced and does not meet the threshold for diminished responsibility. The trial continues.

Alleged sword attacker ‘smiled' after slashing man in the neck, court hears
An alleged sword attacker smiled after slashing a pedestrian in the neck during a 'brutal string of attacks' that left a 14-year-old boy dead, the Old Bailey has heard. Marcus Arduini Monzo, 37, is on trial accused of murdering schoolboy Daniel Anjorin and attempting to kill four others during a 20-minute rampage in Hainault, north-east London, on April 30 last year. He denies the charges. On Monday, jurors were shown CCTV of the first alleged attack, which showed Monzo's grey Ford Transit mounting the pavement and hitting Donato Iwule, a Co-op security guard on his way to work. Footage captured Mr Iwule screaming in agony as he was struck by the van before it collided with a house. Monzo is then seen exiting the vehicle and walking after him while brandishing a sword. Giving evidence, Mr Iwule said: 'I thought I was dying.' He told the court he tried to escape into a nearby garden but was struck on his knee, face and shoulder and knocked to the ground. He said Monzo got out of the van, pulled a sword from a cover 'right in front of my face' and threw the cover aside. 'I said 'I don't know you'… I said it multiple times,' Mr Iwule told prosecutor Tom Little KC. 'He said 'I don't care – I'm going to kill you'.' Mr Iwule said he tried to defend himself and raised his arms but Monzo swung the sword, catching him on the neck. 'I saw blood coming out of my neck,' he said. 'I pressed my thumb to not bleed out… I shouted 'God is greatest' in Arabic – because I'm Muslim. 'When that happened, he was smiling like it was something that he was happy about.' Mr Iwule said Monzo became distracted and he jumped over a fence to escape, later shouting at a schoolboy, believed to be Daniel, to go back inside. Under cross-examination, Mr Iwule said he was standing upright when he was struck and could clearly hear Monzo say he was going to kill him. Last week jurors heard how Monzo had skinned and deboned his own cat before carrying out the alleged attacks, and was under the influence of cannabis that may have led to drug-induced psychosis. However, the prosecution says this does not amount to diminished responsibility. Mitchell Hayes, a witness who was also on his way to work at the Co-op, said he saw the van 'going faster, slowing down, going faster' before the collision. He said he later heard screaming, saw the driver walk around the van and then get back in and reverse away, appearing to hold what looked like a sword. Mr Hayes said he stayed with Mr Iwule, who was holding his neck and bleeding, for 10 to 15 minutes before becoming aware of another incident nearby. He said another colleague, Nathan Hutchinson, began shouting that the attacker had a sword and they saw a body on the other side of the road. 'He was running around with it like a maniac,' Mr Hayes said of the man he believed to be Monzo. Monzo has admitted possessing two swords but denies murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. The trial continues.

Udall neighbors rattled after park restrooms set on fire — twice
UDALL, Kan. (KSNW) — You could smell it before you saw it — the charred remains of the city park restrooms, torched and melted from the inside out. Udall Police Chief Erik King is calling it arson and says it's unlike anything he's dealt with in town before. The damage is estimated at around $10,000. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood 'This is where the trash can was right here in this corner,' King told KSN. 'Melted the alarms, melted the drains, melted the light switches.' Police say it happened Thursday around 4:30 in the afternoon. Then, just hours later, it happened again. 'The same person returned and, at about 8:40 at night, lit the boy's bathroom on fire, and that caused significant damage,' King said. 'It was on fire for 20 minutes before the alarm company notified us.' He says the timing couldn't be worse, with the Fourth of July just around the corner. Neighbors say the smoke drew their attention before they knew what was happening. 'I was doing yardwork and I had the boys, and a lady from out of town came up to the fence and asked if I had seen a person walking around,' said Skylar Kistler, who lives next to the park. That's when she noticed the smoke coming from the bathroom. 'It kind of made us, I guess, feel protective, like a little more protective, like kind of upset that anybody would do that,' she said. Her husband Tylor says the damage is personal. 'I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of nice to have a park like this with a splashpad, and you know everything here for the boys right in our backyard, and it's just kind of bad. This is a good building, and it's terrible,' he said. Chief King says the person believed to be responsible has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention. In the meantime, the city is bringing in port-a-potties, and repairs could take up to two months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
