Everyone with an app on their Android phone put on red alert
A worrying new Android threat has been discovered that millions must not ignore.
Everyone who loves using Android must be on high alert and take care before installing any new apps onto their devices. It seems cyber crooks are, once again, trying to attack this hugely popular platform and not heeding the advice could leave smartphones rammed with annoying adverts that are impossible to remove.
The team at Malwarebytes has raised the latest alert after discovering the so-called "Kaleidoscope" bug. Over 100 applications are thought to have this threat tucked inside, and millions have already downloaded them.
The attack works by online thieves releasing fake versions of real apps found on the Google Play Store. Once installed, they look like the real deal and even have the same app ID as official versions.
Sadly, if a user is tricked into downloading them - usually via unofficial app stores - they then face a screen with unskippable adverts.
Due to the way the attack works, the advertiser never knows anything is wrong, and the users can't use their device without getting annoyed.
It's a lose-lose for companies and consumers as firms are paying for the adverts to be shown and the phone owner gets a screen full of messages.
As Malwarebytes explains, "Advertisers believe they are paying for ads shown in the 'legitimate' app, while users who download versions from third-party app stores are bombarded with the same ads—but they can't skip them. Because both apps use the same app ID, advertisers never know the difference."

To keep your devices free from ad fraud related malware:
• Get your apps from the Google Play store whenever you can.
• Be careful about the permissions you allow a new app. Does it really need those permissions for what it's supposed to do? In this case the 'Display over other apps' should raise a red flag.
• Dubious ad sites often request permission to display notifications. Allowing this will increase the number of ads as they push them to the device's notification bar.
• Use up-to-date and active security software on your Android.

Among Samsung's own added efforts is Theft Protection, a multi-layered suite of features developed to safeguard personal data, even in high-risk situations such as robbery. The update that came into effect June 1 targets devices over a decade old. Enhancements in WhatsApp's system compatibility mean certain aged smartphones will be incapable of supporting the app, attributed to safety concerns. The implementation was initially scheduled for May but got deferred to June. iPhones that were released before 2015 and are unable to update beyond iOS 15.1 are affected by this change. For Android handsets, the requisite operating system is now Android OS 5.0, which debuted in 2014. On the brink of these changes, WhatsApp had been sending out notices advising users to "update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." These warnings were issued to any iPhones that were not running on at least iOS 15.1, reports the Liverpool Echo. Older iPhone models such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, alongside preceding versions, fall out of line with iOS 18 and will thereby find themselves unable to host updates or maintain WhatsApp functioning. As of June 1, the popular messaging app stopped working on certain smartphones. Whatsapp is a popular messaging service used by millions of people in the UK. Whether it's to message your pals about a catch up or to talk to colleagues about work, WhatsApp has quickly become many peoples go to messaging service. However, as of June 1, the popular app no longer works on phones that are more than 10-years-old. This is due to changes in WhatApp's compatibility with operating systems. As a result, older smartphones will no longer have access to the app due to security concerns. The major change was set to take place in May but was pushed back to June. Now iPhones that were released in 2014 or earlier and cannot upgrade to iOS 15.1 will no longer be able to use the app, reports the Liverpool Echo. In terms of Android devices, the minimum requirement is Android OS 5.0, which was released way back in 2014 - over 11 years ago. However, users weren't surprised that the app was disappearing, as WhatsApp sent notifications warning its users that they need to "update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." This was sent to users who are running anything older than iOS 15.1 on their iPhones. In terms of Apple smartphones, those using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus will no longer be able to message through the Meta app. This is due to the devices not being compatible with iOS 18. For Android, phones like Samsung's Galaxy S III, the HTC One X, and the Sony Xperia Z will no longer be able to use WhatsApp. According to 9to5Mac, Meta has revealed on its FAQ page that the reason behind the decision to remove support of this app on older phones is because they do not have the latest updates or functionality required to run WhatsApp. Even Apple has disregarded these older models as over a year ago the tech brand declared that the iPhone 6 was "obsolete". This means that the company no longer repairs or services the device, and third-party service providers can no longer order parts for the product. While WhatsApp may have disappeared off legacy phones, the messaging service is becoming a more impressive service for those who still have access.
