More than 40 MILLION Brits alerted to switch on forgotten anti-theft mobile feature as phone snatching soars

MILLIONS of mobile users across the UK have been urged to switch on little-known anti-theft settings following a spate of phone snatches.
In London alone, two-thirds of thefts now relate to mobile phones, Met Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway told MPs today.

Police seized more than 1,000 stolen handsets and arrested 230 people in a single week earlier this year in a crackdown on the problem.
The Met Police has described it as a colossal £50million-a-year trade.
Often, phone thefts have more to do with raiding people's bank accounts than value in the handset itself.
A victim recently revealed how they were caught out by crafty crooks who went on to spend hundreds.
Tech companies have developed a number of tools to help prevent such incidents.
Google has a few for Android users which detect the motion associated with a physical snatch.
When a snatch is detected your phone will lock so thieves can't go through all your banking apps and more.
Samsung, which uses Android on its phones, alerted more than 40million Samsung Account holders of its anti-theft features.
The firm says these features will now also be available to even more devices soon, having started with the launch of the Galaxy S25 series in February.
Among Samsung's own added efforts is Theft Protection, a multi-layered suite of features developed to safeguard personal data, even in high-risk situations such as robbery.
Google reveals clever trick to prevent thieves from emptying your accounts on the Android 15
"Samsung is deeply committed to working closely with the Home Office on the issue of mobile phone theft and related crimes and we're in constant collaboration with our partners across the industry, to look at new and existing solutions to help combat this complex issue and ultimately help improve the safety of mobile phone users," said Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience (MX) VP of Product and Marketing, UK&I at Samsung.
"Our recent One UI 7 update built further on existing protections with new anti-theft features such as identity check, biometric authentication and security delay, all featured in our latest Galaxy S25 series.
"These features have now also been rolled out into a range of models across our devices and further updates will follow.
"We must do everything we can to ensure the safety and security of our customers when they are using their mobile devices and we will continue to work hard to ensure our customers are aware of the wide range of security features available to them."

Missing woman last seen near Hyde Park three months ago spotted in London pub

A woman who was reported missing in March has mysteriously reappeared in a London pub three months after she was last seen. Portia Vincent-Kirby, from Finchley, vanished en route to Victoria Station after an evening with friends in Hyde Park on February 21. She was then spotted out of the blue in the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel on May 14, but has not been seen since. Her bank cards and passport have not been used since March 3, and her phone has also not pinged since this then. Pictures from the pub show Portia smiling and wearing a faux fur cossack hat. She is described as slim with blue eyes and shoulder-length dyed blonde hair. The 33-year-old is also known to often wear baseball caps. Portia's devastated family are appealing for more information about where she might be. Metro spoke to her brother, Max, in March after her family reported her missing. He criticised the police over their approach to her being missing and urged them to be more proactive with her case. He told Metro: 'It took two weeks after she was reported missing just for them to release a picture of her. 'We have heard very little from them, it's been left to us to find her. All we have been told is her bank cards haven't been used – which isn't good.' More Trending In an updated statement from police last night, her mum, Janina, said: 'We are all very worried as Portia is very vulnerable. Portia has not been in contact with or seen by any family or friends since February. 'We appeal to the public for anyone to please come forward if they know anything about her or her whereabouts. We also appeal to Portia directly, please get in touch with any of your family or friends.' PC Harjinder Kang, from the Met's north west missing persons unit, added: 'We are growing increasingly concerned for Portia's safety, as this behaviour is out of character for her. We urge anyone who may have seen her to contact police. 'Officers have been carrying out a number of enquiries in an effort to trace her and we are now turning to the public for help. Please get in touch if you can help us locate Portia.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Housing plan in tiny Welsh village finally gets go-ahead after 5 years

Housing plan in tiny Welsh village finally gets go-ahead after 5 years Five letters of objection raised concerns including drainage, traffic generation, housing need, flooding and it being a linear development Hayscastle Cross in Pembrokeshire (Image: Google ) A housing scheme in a Pembrokeshire village, first proposed five years ago, has finally been given the green light. An application was submitted for the construction of one dwelling, with additional outline permission for two more on land east of Ty Gwyn in Hayscastle Cross, near Haverfordwest. ‌ The proposal was recommended for approval at the June meeting of Pembrokeshire Council's planning committee, despite being contrary to the authority's development plan, due to a small part of it being outside the settlement boundary. ‌ The scheme includes a contribution to affordable housing, set at 10 per cent of the development value for Hayscastle Cross, amounting to £15,262.50. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . Contributions towards affordable housing in the county can range from as low as 5% in Fishguard and Pembroke Dock to as high as 25% in towns like Narberth. However, the proposal did not go unchallenged, with five letters of objection. Article continues below These raised concerns about drainage, traffic generation, housing need, flooding and the linear nature of the development. Despite these objections, an officer report concluded: "The proposal would result in residential development over a small area of the countryside location in conflict with the requirements [of policies]. "However, the minimal area of land involved and the ability it provides to facilitate development of the site are material considerations which outweigh the identified policy conflicts." ‌ At the meeting, Andrew Vaughan-Harries of Hayston Developments & Planning Ltd expressed his surprise at the lengthy process since the application's submission five years ago, citing "a lot of hurdles" including the Covid-19 pandemic, phosphate concerns, and proximity to a nearby SSSI. He argued that the development, with its £15,000 contribution to affordable housing, would "enhance this little bit of Haycastle Cross". Councillor Brian Hall moved the application, while new committee chair Cllr Mark Carter, representing a nearby ward, remarked: "This to me, is just a natural progression of the village which has expanded over the years; it's just joining the rest of the row."
