Xiaomi posts record Q1 revenue of ₹1.32 lakh crore, net profit jumps 64.5%
Xiaomi reported record-breaking first-quarter results, with revenue hitting ₹1,31,890 crore and adjusted net profit soaring 64.5% year-over-year to ₹12,680 crore, marking the company's strongest quarterly performance to date.
The consumer electronics manufacturer exceeded market expectations with a 47.4% revenue increase compared to Q1 2024, driven by robust growth across all business segments. This marks the second consecutive quarter where Xiaomi's revenue has topped ₹1.2 lakh crore.
Xiaomi reclaimed the top smartphone position in mainland China after a decade, capturing 18.8% market share. Global smartphone shipments reached 41.8 million units, generating ₹59,961 crore in revenue. The company's premiumization strategy showed results, with average smartphone selling prices reaching a record ₹14,372.
The Internet of Things (IoT) division delivered exceptional growth, with revenue surging 58.7% to ₹38,276 crore. Home appliance sales drove this expansion, with air conditioner shipments exceeding 1.1 million units (up 65%) and washing machine deliveries doubling year-over-year to 740,000 units.

Housing societies raise redevelopment and maintenance issues in feedack to draft rules
Pune: The proposed uniformity in maintenance charges, transfer of share procedures, and quorum requirements for redevelopment meetings were among the key concerned raised by housing societies over the draft rules framed under the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960, officials said. The draft rules, which have been pending since the Act was amended in 2019, were published on April 15, following which state govt invited feedback by May 15. The cooperation department received more than 300 objections and suggestions, an official told TOI on Saturday. Deepak Taware, cooperation commissioner and registrar of housing societies, said that all comments are being reviewed section-wise. "After finalising the remarks, I will submit the compiled feedback to the cooperation department. It will then be forwarded to the law and judiciary department for final approval," he said. Among the major proposals in the draft rules, state has recommended doubling society registration fees from Rs2,500 to Rs5,000 and giving legal recognition to online meetings. The rules also cap the interest on delayed maintenance payments at 12% per annum (simple interest), down from 21%, offering relief to residents struggling with arrears. The reforms seek to overhaul financial governance by mandating multiple dedicated funds — reserve, sinking, major repairs, education and training, and welfare funds. The draft also formalises society name reservations under rule 106 C-2 and simplifies the process of filling casual vacancies in managing committees without requiring election authority clearance. The provisions related to succession and nominee membership have also been streamlined in the draft rules. Transfers based on registered family settlement deeds will now be accepted, and nominees can be admitted as provisional members after the original member's death — moves expected to significantly reduce litigation. For redevelopment, the borrowing limit for societies has been raised to 10 times the approved land value, instead of 10 times the society's own funds. The developer selection process will need to be video-recorded in the presence of at least 51% of members. "There were some objections to the above provisions," another cooperation department official said. Housing federations have welcomed the draft rules but stressed the need for swift implementation. "The Act without rules is like a machine without fuel. We have waited five years for these guidelines," said a member of a housing society. "The delay has created administrative confusion and left societies vulnerable to legal ambiguity." Sujata Apte, president of a housing society in Viman Nagar, said while several long-pending demands have been addressed in the draft, time is of the essence. "Societies are stuck on issues like redevelopment and member nominations. These rules will bring clarity and consistency. We hope that govt clears them by June, as promised," she said. Rajan Mhatre, a member from a housing society in Mumbai, said the draft reflects the ground realities faced by thousands of societies. "The reduced interest cap on arrears and clarity on succession will help prevent disputes. But unless these are enacted, they remain only good intentions on paper." The final rules are likely to be cleared by state cabinet in June, paving the way for the long-pending implementation of the amended Act, officials said.

Bombay High Court holds businessman's arrest in Rs 67 cr case illegal, orders his release
Representative image MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court vacation bench on Friday declared the arrest of Anchor Group director Hemang Shah , 50, by Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as illegal, citing failure by police to produce him before a magistrate in 24 hours. The court ordered his immediate release from Arthur Road Jail. The vacation bench, comprising Justices Gauri Godse and Somasekhar Sundaresan, noted that chat messages between the wives of the two brothers supported Hemang Shah's claim that his arrest and continued custody were intended to recover the settlement amount in mediation between family members. The arrest was based on allegations of defrauding his elder brother, Mehul Shah, of Rs 67 crore. Hemang Shah petitioned the HC, arguing that his arrest was illegal since he was not produced before a magistrate within 24 hours as required by law. He was detained at Delhi airport at 5.30 pm on May 17 and produced in court only at 10.45 pm on May 18. The dispute, being resolved before a mediator, is between Hemang on one side and his brother and their father on the other. The FIR was filed during mediation, and Hemang, scheduled to fly to Muscat from Delhi on May 17, was apprehended at the airport due to the LOC. Police stated they arrested him on May 18 after the immigration department handed him over at 4.30 am, and then he was brought to Mumbai. Senior counsel for the elder brother-the complainant-argued that the immigration officers cannot be considered police officers, and hence his custody after being "accosted" at the airport was not an "arrest" by cops. The EOW's arrest memo states he was arrested on May 18 at 7.30 pm. The HC bench said, "In our view, the act of the Immigration Officers to accost the petitioner or detain him on 17th May 2025 at 1730 hours is the act of arrest, and therefore the period of 24 hours as contemplated under Section 58 of BNS and Article 22(2) of the Constitution of India shall begin on 17th May 2025 at 1730 hours."
