BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — Rafael Pinzon had 27 points in Bryant's 78-71 victory over Binghamton on Saturday.
Pinzon shot 9 for 18 (4 for 9 from 3-point range) and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line for the Bulldogs (15-10, 9-1 America East Conference). Earl Timberlake scored 13 points while shooting 4 of 12 from the field and 5 for 6 from the line and added nine rebounds and seven assists. Connor Withers shot 3 of 12 from the field, including 2 for 8 from 3-point range, and went 3 for 4 from the line to finish with 11 points.
The Bearcats (12-13, 4-6) were led in scoring by Tymu Chenery, who finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Evan Ashe added 17 points for Binghamton. Gavin Walsh also had 10 points and eight rebounds.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen said Thursday he does not intend to play either of his top two quarterbacks, Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson, in Saturday's preseason finale at Cincinnati. Steichen also does not intend to play many starters. The announcement comes two days after Steichen said Jones will be the starting quarterback for Indy's Sept. 7 season opener against the Miami Dolphins. 'I think he's one play away from going into an actual game and don't want to take the risk there in that situation,' Steichen said when asked about Richardson. 'We've got a lot of our threes and fours playing in this game.' NFL coaches generally don't play starters in the final preseason game, which is why Jones will sit out. Richardson also has been susceptible to injuries, starting only 15 of 34 games in his first two NFL seasons after being selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft. He also was benched for two games last season after pulling himself out of a game because he was tired. Steichen also announced four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard will not play Saturday. Indy signed Howard on Monday. Howard did not play in the league last season, but worked with Indy's new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo his first two seasons with the Dolphins. ___

Boilermakers end quarterback competition by naming Ryan Brown the starter for next week's opener
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue coach Barry Odom ended the suspense Thursday, naming Ryan Browne his starting quarterback for the Aug. 31 season opener against Ball State. Browne is the only quarterback on the depth chart who was with Purdue last season, but he also had the shortest amount of time to learn Odom's playbook. Browne transferred to North Carolina in the spring before changing his mind and returning to Purdue. Browne battled three transfers — Evans Chuba, Malachi Singleton and Bennett Meredith. Chuba played previously at Washington State, Singleton competed at Arkansas and Meredith attended Arizona State. But Browne emerged as the winner. 'Ryan will be the starter and now the job for everybody else around the quarterback, is to play at a high level to make it easier on the quarterback,' the first-year coach said. 'You've got to be able to catch, you've got to be able to protect, we've got to be great in our play calls and we're excited about where the offense is headed.' Browne has appeared in nine games over his first two seasons at Purdue, making eight appearances last season when he also started the first two games of his career. He's completed 55 of 92 passes for a completion percentage of 59.8% with 636 yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions. He also has 71 carries for 240 yards. Purdue won its opener last season then lost its final 11 games, and next week will try to break the second-longest losing streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kent State has lost 21 in a row. But the biggest factor in choosing Browne was consistency. 'He did a great job and got a lot better,' offensive coordinator Josh Henson said. 'The guy's intangibles are phenomenal, especially only being a part of the team for three or four months and the relationship he's developed with the team. He's vocal about it, he's intense about it and, to me, that's one of the best parts about him and who he is as a leader.'

Canadian government will not appeal sexual assault acquittal of 5 hockey players, lawyer says
LONDON, Ontario (AP) — A lawyer for one of five former world junior hockey players acquitted of sexual assault charges last month says the Canadian government will not appeal the judge's ruling. Daniel Brown, who represents Alex Formenton, said in an email Thursday he had been informed of that decision. Formenton, Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote were all acquitted of sexual assault. McLeod was also acquitted of a separate charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault. The defense deemed the ruling a 'resounding vindication,' while the complainant's lawyer called it devastating. Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia found the complainant's testimony was not credible or reliable and that there were 'troubling aspects' in how she delivered some of her evidence about the 2018 encounter. The judge said the complainant tended to blame others for inconsistencies in her narrative and exaggerated her level of intoxication that night. The NHL said at the time of the ruling the players — none of whom is currently on an NHL roster or has an active contract — remained ineligible to play in the league while it reviews the judge's findings, adding in a statement that the allegations in the case were disturbing, even if not determined to be criminal. The Players' Association said the five should have the opportunity to return to the ice, adding that the league's eligibility ruling was 'inconsistent' with discipline procedures in the collective bargaining agreement. ___
