EVs and CNG vehicles to replace old garbage fleet in Coimbatore

The Hindu28-07-2025
Coimbatore Corporation has initiated the gradual replacement of its conventional waste collection vehicles with electric and compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered alternatives. This transition is part of the civic body's broader strategy to modernise solid waste management operations and reduce vehicular emissions across the city.
A total of 25 electric vehicles (EVs) and 25 CNG vehicles have been procured by the Corporation. Of these, 15 EVs have recently been inducted into service, and the remaining units are expected to be deployed within the next month. According to officials, the new EVs offer an extended operational range of 1,000 to 1,200 hours per full charge and are capable of transporting up to 1.5 tonnes of waste, more than double the 800-kg capacity of the existing vehicles. 'The vehicles require seven to eight hours for a complete charge. With the increased load capacity, we are able to carry out waste removal more efficiently,' a senior Corporation official said.
In parallel, the Corporation is in the planning stage of establishing a 250 metric tonne capacity bio-CNG plant at the Vellalore dump yard. 'If the project materialises, we intend to process segregated organic waste to generate bio-CNG. We are also considering applicable subsidies under waste-to-energy schemes,' the official added.
The Corporation currently operates 110 three-wheeled vehicles and 815 waste collection trucks. Around 100 of these are awaiting fitness certification, and vehicles over 15 years old are being phased out. 'We are planning to procure an additional 250 vehicles as part of our fleet renewal programme. These will gradually replace ageing vehicles and help improve operational efficiency,' the official said.

Construction of sports centre at Anna Nagar makes good progress

Work on constructing a sports centre at Anna Nagar in Tiruchi is progressing at a brisk pace, with the authorities expecting to complete it within a few months. Following requests from residents, the civic body proposed developing sports infrastructure to promote sports and recreational activities in the city. The facility is being established on a 2.3-acre land belonging to Tiruchi Corporation near Uzhavar Santhai at Anna Nagar in Ward 28. A sum of ₹5.51 crore was sanctioned under the State Finance Commission Grant and the Corporation Funds to develop the sports complex. A tender was floated in November 2024, and the construction of the sports centre commenced in January. 'Most of the civil works have been completed, and work on setting up the indoor stadium and courts is underway. Over 50% of the work has been completed, and the pending works will be completed before November,' said a senior Corporation official. The new sports facility will feature an indoor badminton court, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a gazebo, recreational space, and a modern gym. Among civic amenities, the sports centre will have a kitchen-cum-dining hall with an in-house cook, an administrative block, separate accommodation, and changing rooms for sportspersons, sanitation complexes, CCTV cameras, and seating arrangements to view the sport. There would be parking facilities to accommodate 50 cars and two-wheelers. The sports complex will have training programmes for aspirants. The public will be offered a monthly membership programme to access the facility. Officials said the facility would boost the city's sports infrastructure and encourage a healthy lifestyle among citizens, particularly youth.

MTC inks pact with firms for launching CNG filling stations

Chennai: In a push towards alternative fuels, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has signed agreements with two gas distribution firms — Torrent Gas Chennai Pvt Ltd and THINK Gas — for setting up compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations at two bus depots. The CNG stations will be established at MTC's existing Ambattur depot and the proposed Varadharajapuram depot along the Outer Ring Road. Torrent Gas will oversee operations in Chennai and Tiruvallur, while THINK Gas will manage the Kancheepuram and Chengalpet regions. MTC plans to convert 240 diesel-run buses into CNG-powered vehicles. Over time, 1,000 additional buses will be converted. "Ambattur was chosen as our first location because it already has a pipeline network. Varadharajapuram, on the other hand, is right along the Outer Ring Road, making it logistically ideal," said T Prabhushankar, managing director of MTC. "Getting local clearances, right of way (RoW) permit, and district administrative approvals are the main challenges," he added. To make the switch financially viable, MTC has arrived at a favourable pricing plan. For the first three years, the fuel will be priced 6% lower than diesel's landed cost, which translates to around 85.2 when diesel is 90.65 a litre. A 4 per unit discount will follow for the rest of the agreement's duration. Torrent Gas did not respond to requests for comment.
