New Zealand Votes Hato Hone St John As One Of The Most Trusted Charities For 2025

Scoop25-05-2025

Hato Hone St John is excited to have been recognised as one of New Zealand's Most Trusted Charities in the Reader's Digest annual Trusted Brand Awards for the 12th time.
Hato Hone St John Chief Executive, Peter Bradley, says the recognition is deeply moving and a reflection of the trust New Zealanders place in the organisation during life's most critical moments.
'Being named one of New Zealand's Most Trusted Charities is incredibly humbling. It's not something we take for granted – it's a powerful reminder of the responsibility we continue to carry after 140 years of St John being alongside New Zealand communities.'
In the past year, Hato Hone St John received almost 700,000 emergency ambulance calls to 111, transported and/or treated over 500,000 patients, taught over 90,000 students life-saving skills through First Aid training, provided in-home support for 60,000 people with medical alarms, and assisted the overall public health system with almost 90,000 trips carried out by Waka Ora Health Shuttles and over 80,000 transfers scheduled by Patient Transfer Services.
Mr Bradley attributes the organisation's ability to maintain recognition as a Most Trusted Charity as testimony to the care its staff and over 8,000 volunteers show towards all New Zealanders every day.
'This honour belongs to every one of our people – our staff, volunteers and supporters who show up with compassion, skill, and commitment, often in the most challenging circumstances.
"Our emergency ambulance services, community health programmes, and broader initiatives are all about strengthening the resilience of our communities. This recognition from the New Zealand public is a profound honour – it reflects the trust and connection we strive to build every day with our communities.'
The Most Trusted Brands is an annual independent survey conducted globally, now 25 years old in New Zealand. The work is commissioned by Reader's Digest and carried out by Catalyst Research who, this year, polled a representative sample of 1,750 Kiwis. They voted on 496 brands in 67 categories of products and services on a scale of 1-10 for trust and awareness.
Notes:
Hato Hone St John provides emergency ambulance services to 90 percent of New Zealanders and covers 97 percent of the country's geographical area.
Hato Hone St John is made up of a mix of full-time paid staff and volunteers.
Along with the emergency ambulance service, Hato Hone St John operates a significant number of community health programmes and other activities which help build community resilience. They include Waka Ora Health Shuttles, Caring Caller, St John Youth, and St John in Schools.
Hato Hone St John also delivers event health services, medical alarm services, first aid training, and operates retail stores across the country.

Woman attacked by dog at Auckland Botanic Gardens

Auckland Botanic Gardens. Photo: Supplied A woman required an ambulance after she was attacked by a dog at Auckland Botanic Gardens on Monday. A St John spokesperson said they were notified of an animal incident at the gardens about 9:30am. "One ambulance responded and transported one patient, in a minor condition, to Bakerfield Medical Centre." Auckland Council licensing and compliance general manager Rob Irvine told RNZ the botanic garden's staff came to the woman's aid after she was injured by a roaming dog in an on-leash area of the park. "We understand that staff administered first aid on site while an ambulance and Animal Management were notified. "We're currently investigating the incident, including reviewing CCTV footage. He said the incident was a reminder to all dog owners to ensure their dogs were not off-leash or roaming in dedicated on-leash areas. "If you see a roaming dog or need to report a dog attack on a person or animal, report it immediately and our Animal Management Officers will be on-site as soon as possible." Roaming dogs can be reported to the council on 09 301 0101 and dog attacks can be reported on 0800 462 685. He asked anyone who witnessed the incident on Monday to call Animal Management. Meanwhile, a woman shared on social media that her mother was the victim of the attack. She claimed after the dog bit her mum's arm unprovoked, its owners did not stay with her as she lay on the concrete path bleeding out. Movember & New Zealand Rugby Launch Ahead Of The Game To Build Mental Fitness & Resilience In Young Players Via Sport

Movember, in partnership with New Zealand Rugby, has launched Ahead of the Game – a proven, evidence-based programme that harnesses the power of sport to improve mental fitness and wellbeing among rangatahi. Supported by an initial $1 million investment from Movember, the programme will reach young people aged 12 to 18, along with the parents, coaches and volunteers who support them, aiming to build resilience, increase mental health literacy and reduce stigma around seeking help. 'Young people are facing more pressures than ever – and boys in particular often struggle in silence,' said Tom Mulvaney, psychologist and Movember Director of Young Men's Health Australasia. 'This programme gives young players the language and confidence to open up and support each other – and shows them that their community has their back. Young men have some of the worst rates of severe mental health – and this programme looks to get ahead of that, building coping skills and changing the game at a critical age.' This initiative was launched on Friday at St Peter's College in Auckland, alongside Blues and All Blacks player Harry Plummer and representatives from both Movember and NZ Rugby. After a successful pilot reaching over 100 teenage rugby players across six schools, the programme will now be scaled nationally through NZ Rugby's Mental Health initiative Mind Set Engage. The 2025 rollout will begin in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Hawke's Bay, with plans to expand to all regions over the coming years. 'The programme has been proven to boost mental health literacy, help-seeking intentions, and the confidence to support others – which is particularly beneficial for young people,' said Dr Nathan Price, New Zealand Rugby's Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing. 'Providing young players with the tools to support their own wellbeing and feel more comfortable asking for help is a great way we can support our rugby community.' Movember has invested nearly $1 million to bring Ahead of the Game to life in New Zealand over the next three years, building on its success in Australia, the UK and Ireland. This launch lays the foundation for long-term community impact, with a strong focus on supporting young people's mental fitness and resilience. Movember is seeking to grow a network of partners who share a commitment to youth mental health to expand the programme's reach. Movember is already working with delivery partners including Youthline, Attitude NZ, Challenge 2000 and Wowbeing, with the programme positioned to scale sustainably and drive change at both a local and national level. ' We're proud to be delivering this world-class programme to young Kiwis — and we're actively seeking partners to help scale its reach and long-term impact,' said Michelle Terry, CEO of Movember. 'This is just the beginning of what we hope will become a game-changing movement for young men's mental health.' 'Rugby is more than a game – it's a community, and that community has a responsibility to look after its people. This partnership with Movember reflects our deep commitment to the wellbeing of our rangatahi. By giving young players the tools to navigate life's challenges and look out for each other, we're helping to build stronger teams and stronger futures,' said Mark Robinson, CEO of New Zealand Rugby.
