
The sunny side of renting chickens
While many people idly muse about backyard farming, for those not ready to take the plunge permanently, there's a solution: renting a henhouse, complete with egg-laying birds.
'I really want to try it out and see whether I like it or not,' said the Los Angeles-area resident as she took delivery of two chickens and all the equipment they need to live a happy egg-laying life.
'Some people I know have chickens at home, but it's a lot of work for them – they had to adjust the whole garden themselves. So I think renting a chicken is a good start.'
Hiring hens began to gain ground in the United States around a decade ago in Pennsylvania when a farming couple set up 'Rent The Chicken'.

Since then, the project has expanded to more than 40 cities across North America, with local farmers setting up their own offshoots.
The service saw an uptick in interest during the Covid-19 lockdowns, when people were stuck at home.
But it has skyrocketed in recent months as consumers recoil over the soaring cost of eggs, thanks to a bird flu pandemic that has seen the wholesale culling of egg-laying birds.
'Especially this year, we have had a much higher interest, I would say, three to four times as much as we were seeing this time last year,' said Victoria Lee, who serves the Los Angeles region from her farm in Agua Dulce.
Some Americans have been forking over more than US$10 for a dozen eggs, up to three times their usual price, with supermarkets putting daily limits on the number of cartons a shopper can buy.

The eyewatering costs were a regular feature of last year's presidential campaign, with candidate Donald Trump pledging to lower grocery bills when he got to the White House.
But prices have continued to climb, and in March, eggs were 60% more expensive than a year earlier, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.
Lee is quick to point out, however, that raising chickens at home is not cheaper than buying eggs at the store.
Instead, it's a question of quality.
'By the time they get to the grocery store, (eggs) are on average 48-60 days old,' she said.
'As eggs sit, no matter the quality at the start of that countdown, over time, the protein in the eggs begins to break down.'

Backyard eggs, in contrast, are only as old as however long it takes the owner to pick them up off the henhouse floor.
'Rent the Chicken' offers different options that range from around US$500 to over US$1,000 for six months, depending on location and number of birds desired.
Packages include the birds, food, waterers and feeders, additional treats and a chicken care guide. But it is the included coop that is most striking – a sort of mini house with what looks like a patio, completely protected by fences.
It's also movable, thanks to wheels on the bottom.
'Every day, our renters will lift this up ... and move it forward ... with the chickens having access to fresh grass each day.

'They're getting the experience of being on wide-open pasture with that new stimulation, new bugs to look for, new grass to dig through, while still being safe in a predator-proof coop.'
The convenience is what made the package attractive to Kim, a university professor living in La Crescenta, near Los Angeles, and when her new coop arrived, she was absolutely thrilled.
'Free eggs!' Lee exclaimed while unloading the new backyard tenants and handing over a complimentary dozen laid the previous week.
A client with two chickens can expect up to 14 eggs per week, Lee explains.
Kim, whose son is an athlete who eats a lot of eggs, says although the supply crisis prompted her to rent the chickens, it's 'bigger than that'.
'I really wanted to have something for the kids, also to learn as a way of life, and to compare the taste of the eggs,' she said. — AFP

Myanmar border closure cripples Thai exports worth billions

The closure, reportedly ordered to seize control of trade revenues, has brought the flow of large goods to a halt and is threatening trade worth an estimated 130 billion baht (US$4 billion). On Aug 18, 2025, officials in Myawaddy, Kayin State, opposite Thailand's Mae Sot district, unexpectedly shut the border crossing to all large vehicles and commercial goods. The move came without any prior warning to Thai authorities, including customs officials in Mae Sot. According to reports, the order originated from the capital, Naypyidaw, as part of a crackdown aimed at redirecting border trade profits to the central government. For years, a significant portion of this revenue has benefitted various ethnic armed groups, including the Border Guard Force (BGF), the dominant military force in the area. Myanmar's government is now seeking to re-establish control and increase its own income. While the main trade bridge remains closed, the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge is still operating for pedestrians and small-scale local trade. However, the Second Bridge is the primary route for large-scale imports and exports, and its closure has caused significant disruption for shipping companies, hauliers and merchants. In response to the crisis, the Tak Chamber of Commerce held an emergency meeting on Monday (Aug 18) to discuss the impact of the closure. The meeting proposed that Thailand's Ministry of Commerce urgently negotiate with the Myanmar government to find a solution. The situation is further complicated by new, stricter measures from Thai authorities. From Aug 20, the Governor of Tak province has mandated that exporters provide two days' advance notice for all goods, which will then be inspected by military, administrative and customs officials. Business owners fear this will create further delays and potential damage to goods, raising concerns that the entire border trade system could be 'paralysed'. Official data from Mae Sot Customs reveals the severity of the export slump. The value of Thai exports to Myanmar via this channel has plummeted from nearly 50 billion baht per quarter to just over 10 billion baht. Recent figures show the volatile nature of the border economy. For the 2025 fiscal year (Oct 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025), total trade value reached 138.6 billion baht, a 78.94 per cent increase from 2024. However, this growth was driven by a staggering 142.34 per cent rise in imports, primarily antimony ore. Over the same period, the value of exports actually fell by 21.34 per cent. Top exports from Thailand include mobile phones and accessories, motorcycles, and palm oil, while imports from Myanmar are dominated by antimony ore, followed by dry and fresh chilies. Data from Mae Sot Customs also highlights the challenge of unofficial trade, with 68.71 per cent of imports and 61.85 per cent of exports conducted through 'unapproved channels' during the current fiscal year. Can the rich continue to prop up US consumer spending?:
ORLANDO: US consumer spending's surprising resilience is the main reason the economy has not only avoided recession, but continued to grow at a solid clip. The big question now is whether American households can keep that going, especially with higher, tariff-fueled prices coming down the pike. In the US, "the consumer" is king. Consumer spending accounts for around 70 per cent of total economic output, so changes in people's propensity to spend have a direct, outsized influence on the health of the economy. But "the consumer" is, of course, actually millions of people. And when you split them into groups based on income and wealth, it becomes clear that total spending disproportionately comes from the rich. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said earlier this year that the richest 10 per cent of Americans, those earning at least US$250,000 a year, now account for half of all consumer spending. That's a record. Thirty years ago, the richest 10 per cent accounted for 36 per cent of all consumer spending. A Boston Fed paper last week backed up Zandi's findings, concluding that the strength of aggregate consumer spending in the last three years is due to high-income earners. But the authors suggest high-income consumers have a reasonable cushion because they haven't maxed out their credit cards. While the lower-income and middle-income cohorts both saw their credit card debt soar past pre-pandemic totals in the last few years, wealthier Americans' credit card debt remains below the 2019 high and well below the level implied by the pre-pandemic trend. So, if necessary, they still have room to borrow to fund their spending. EARNING POWER Spending across the income deciles could also be supported by enhanced earning power. While some indicators show that the US labour market may be softening, annual average earnings growth still rose in July to 3.9 per cent, meaning real wage growth is running at a 1.3 per cent annual pace, depending on what slice of inflation you use. Real annual wage growth has been between 1.0 per cent and 1.8 per cent for over two years, above the average for the decade leading into the COVID-19 health crisis. And overall workers' income may be growing at an even faster rate, according to economists at Bank of America. They calculate that aggregate labor income – number of jobs multiplied by wages multiplied by number of hours worked - increased 5.5 per cent in July on a six-month annualized basis. Most of that growth was driven by higher wages. With household delinquency rates, excluding student loans, cooling off this year, strength in labor income should continue to support consumer spending, they argue. This, in turn, should help the US avoid the recessionary spiral of lower spending begetting layoffs, begetting even lower spending, begetting more job cuts. This is one of the reasons BofA economists retain their out-of-consensus call that the Federal Reserve won't cut interest rates at all this year. FLASHING AMBER? Others are less confident. Zandi at Moody's Analytics warns that a correction on Wall Street would hit the rich hard via the negative wealth effects, "and, given how weak the economy is, push it into recession." The concentration of equity ownership at the top of the US wealth ladder is extreme - the richest 1 per cent in the country owns 50 per cent of stock market assets and the top 10 per cent holds around 90 per cent. Some measures of household spending are already flashing amber. Inflation-adjusted spending as measured by personal consumption expenditures flatlined in the first half of this year. Yet figures on Friday showed that retail sales rose 0.5 per cent in July after an upwardly revised 0.9 per cent gain in June. But then there are tariffs. Companies, not consumers, have borne the brunt of these levies so far. Economists at Goldman Sachs estimate that consumers absorbed only 22 per cent of tariff costs through June, but they reckon that figure could rise to 67 per cent in the months ahead if the Trump administration's expected tariffs are implemented. So there are grounds for both caution and optimism. Much will depend on whether the rich draw in their horns.
