Mondo Duplantis raises his pole vault world record to 6.29 meters in Budapest
Mondo Duplantis raised his pole vault world record to 6.29 meters at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial meet in Budapest on Tuesday.
The Olympic and world champion added a centimeter at his second attempt to the previous record mark which he set in June at a Diamond League meet in front of home fans in Stockholm.
It was the 13th pole vault world record for the 25-year-old Swede and the third this year.
The Louisiana-born Duplantis competes for his mother's native Sweden.
It was another statement win in Budapest for Duplantis, who retained his world title in the Hungarian capital in 2023 by clearing 6.10.
At the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting on Tuesday, Duplantis cleared 6.11 at his second attempt and then successfully targeted the world record also with his second try.

(AP) -- The Los Angeles Angels turned the eighth triple play in team history Tuesday night, with shortstop Zach Neto getting two putouts and an assist off a line drive by Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani. Miguel Rojas was on second and Dalton Rushing was on first for the Dodgers in the sixth inning when Ohtani hit a drive right up the middle past reliever Brock Burke. Neto caught Ohtani's liner and stepped on second base in stride to get Rojas. Neto quickly threw to first, where Nolan Schanuel tagged out Rushing as the Dodgers rookie attempted to sneak back. Rushing stepped awkwardly on first base and fell hard to the dirt after getting tagged, staying down for a long moment. The Angels' triple play was their first since Aug. 18, 2023. It also preserved a 5-5 tie in the latest edition of the Freeway Series. The Angels have won the first four games this season against the Dodgers.

Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis bettered his pole vault world record by a centimeter on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 meters at the athletics meet in Budapest. Sweden's Duplantis broke the world record for the 13th time as he soared over the bar at the second attempt to improve on his 6.28 m from Stockholm in June. It was the 25-year-old's third record of 2025, having also cleared 6.27 m in Clermont-Ferrand in February. Duplantis notched up his 33rd competition victory, clearing 6.11 m on his first attempt to finish ahead of Greece's Emmanouil Karalis (6.02 m) and Australia's Kurtis Marschall (5.83 m). On his second attempt at 6.29 m, Duplantis touched the bar with one leg and his stomach, but it held, and the jump was validated. Since Ukrainian Sergey Bubka became the first athlete to clear 6 meters on July 13, 1985 in Paris, the world record has been broken 26 times, including 12 times by Bubka, 13 times by Duplantis and once by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie. The US-born Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020 with 6.17m. Duplantis is favorite for a third consecutive outdoor world title in a month's time in Tokyo. On the track, Jamaican sprinter Bryan Levell laid down a marker for those championships by posting the third quickest time this year to win the men's 200m. The 21-year-old, who reached the semifinals at last year's Olympics, headed into the race with a season's best of 20.10 seconds.
