Israel denies Trump's announcement of new hostage deaths

The Israeli mediator in charge of hostages, Gal Hirsch, stated Wednesday that the number of people still alive and held captive in Gaza after being kidnapped during the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, remains unchanged, contradicting statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"Currently, 59 hostages are held by the terrorist organization Hamas. Twenty-four of them are on the list of living hostages. Thirty-five of them are on the list of hostages whose death has been officially confirmed," he wrote on X.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump reported three additional deaths among the hostages still held in Gaza and indicated that only 21 were still alive.
"We want to try to save as many hostages as possible," he continued. "This is a terrible situation."
These statements deviated from the assessment provided by the Israeli military which stated that, of the 251 people abducted on Oct.7, 2023, 58 are still held in Gaza, and 34 of them are dead.
Hamas also holds the body of an Israeli soldier killed in a previous war in Gaza in 2014.
Expected from May 13 to 16 in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded the return of the hostages.

Israeli military official says Hezbollah must be disarmed across Lebanon

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 August 2025, 12:43 An Israeli military official has said that 'there is a chance to create a better situation in Lebanon and Syria if it does not get wasted due to hatred.' 'The dismantling of Hezbollah's weapons must involve entire Lebanon and not only the South,' the official said, according to Al-Arabiya's Al-Hadath channel. 'Our previous policy of 'buying calm' with Hezbollah has failed and the October (2023) events proved that,' the official added. He also noted that 'Hezbollah ignored the calls of (Iran's) Quds Force for responding militarily (against Israel) during the war (of Israel) against Iran.'

Iran's president mocks Netanyahu over pledge of help in water crisis

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has mocked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's offer to help with Iran's water crisis. Pezeshkian said Wednesday on X that Israel has denied Palestinians access to water and food, so can't be trusted. "A regime that deprives people of Gaza from water and food says it will bring water to Iran? A MIRAGE, NOTHING MORE," he said. Pezeshkian also said during a Cabinet meeting in Tehran that "those with a deceptive appearance are falsely claiming compassion for the people of Iran. "First look at the difficult situation of Gaza and (their) defenseless people, especially children who are struggling ... because of hunger, lack of access to potable water and medicine, because of a siege by the brutal regime." Netanyahu addressed Iranians in a video message on Tuesday, pledging that Israel would help solve the country's severe water shortages once Iran is "free" from the current government, according to Israeli media, including The Jerusalem Post. The remarks represent a transformation from a state of a war to political spats. In June, Israel carried out waves of airstrikes on Iran, killing nearly 1,100 people, including many military commanders. Retaliatory Iranian strikes killed 28 people in Israel. On Sunday, Pezeshkian told a group off officials that "we do not have water, we do not have water under our feet and we do not have water behind our dams, so you tell me what do we do? Someone comes and tells me what do I have to do?" He said that "we are in a serious and unimaginable crisis," and added that his administration is in touch with experts who are trying to find a solution to the problem. Experts say years of drought and water mismanagement led to the crisis.

Yesterday, General Yahya Saree, announced that the Yemeni Air Force had carried out a special military operation targeting five vital military targets in occupied Palestine. This operation was in response to the genocide in Gaza and the recent Israeli aggression on the port of Hodeidah. The Yemeni Armed Forces continue their operations in support of the Gaza Strip, stressing that their cessation is linked to the cessation of Israeli aggression against the Strip.
