Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more
Apples, lemons, and most oranges - fruits that are almost entirely imported here - are going to cost 5 percent more come July.
The reason? The government is expanding the sales and services tax (SST) to cover more "non-essential" goods and services, and imported fruits are on that list.
Local fruits, however, will remain tax-free, as will a slew of other food staples.
Other food items that will be taxed include salmon, cod, truffle mushrooms, and king crab.

Appeals court hits pause on Yusoff v Anwar
The Court of Appeal has granted a temporary stay of proceedings in the sexual assault civil suit brought against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim by Yusoff Rawther.
This is pending a decision on Anwar's bid to get a full stay on the case.
The trial was supposed to commence next week before Anwar got the temporary stay on Tuesday.
HIGHLIGHTS
No opt-out for MCMC data gathering
There is no option for mobile users to opt out of an ongoing pilot project involving the collection of anonymised mobile phone data for official statistical purposes.
The MCMC cited legal provisions that allow them to collect anonymised data for infrastructure improvement.
They added that mobile phone data is not classified as personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, as it reportedly can't be used to identify or trace individuals, either directly or indirectly.

FMM urges govt to delay SST expansion, warns of cost and inflation risks
THE Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has urged the government to defer the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) set to take effect on July 1, 2025, warning that the move is too soon, too broad, and risks pushing up costs and inflation. 'The untimely implementation of the expanded scope of taxes will exert inflationary pressure… businesses already grappling with rising costs may have no choice but to pass these additional burdens on to consumers,' said FMM president Tan Sri Datuk Soh Thian Lai. The new sales tax orders will subject 4,806 tariff lines to a 5% tax, including machinery, equipment, and technical tools used in manufacturing. Only 359 Harmonised System (HS) codes remain exempt or zero-rated – meaning about 97% of goods will be taxed. FMM warned that taxing capital goods like machinery will raise investment costs and delay industrial upgrades. Although no penalties will be imposed until Dec 31, businesses have under three weeks to adjust systems and pricing. The expanded 8% service tax now covers leasing, construction, education, healthcare, and financial services. FMM estimates this could increase annual costs by RM24,000 to RM60,000 per rented premise. 'Clearer guidelines and a broader exemption list are urgently needed,' said Soh, adding that manufacturers offering mixed goods and services face implementation uncertainty. FMM also reiterated its call to reinstate GST, calling it a more transparent and efficient tax model that avoids the cascading cost effect of SST. 'Instead of widening a narrow and cascading tax system… GST offers a more efficient, transparent and broad-based solution,' Soh said. –TMR

Govt Mulls Setting Up TVET Commission
The government is actively considering the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission to support the sector's rapid development and reforms. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter will be assessed promptly given the surge in student enrolment and the expanding range of training programmes. 'I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs,' he said. Anwar added that he and the Ministry of Finance will evaluate the adequacy of current facilities and explore better synergy among government-linked companies, private players, and existing TVET institutions. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for improved starting salaries for TVET graduates, reflecting their strong employability rate. 'Previously, we set the minimum wage at RM1,700. But if a group like TVET graduates achieves up to 98 per cent employability, RM1,700 is not enough. For TVET graduates, if possible, we want to raise the starting salary to as much as RM3,000,' he said. To support the ongoing development of the sector, Anwar announced an additional RM40 million allocation for the National TVET Council, along with RM10 million specifically for Melaka to strengthen TVET entrepreneurship initiatives. The announcement was made during the launch of National TVET Day 2025 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. Present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and several other federal and state leaders. Related
