Tamil Nadu govt forms three-member committee to oversee Periyar University operations
The decision was made after a special meeting of the university's syndicate committee, held in response to the leadership vacuum created by the end of Prof Jegannathan's extended term on May 19.
The newly-formed committee is headed by E Sundaravalli, director of Collegiate Education, who will function as the in-charge vice-chancellor. Prof Subramani, director of the Kalaignar Research Centre, and Dr Jayanthi, principal of Shakti Kailash Women's College, are part of the panel.
It may be noted that Prof Jegannathan had appointed Dr T Periasamy, head of the Tamil department as the in-charge V-C, without consulting the university syndicate a few days ago.

The Madurai meet comes amid TVK's aggressive membership drive and Vijay's plans to tour the state extensively. Political observers say the conference could serve as a launchpad for TVK's full-scale campaign, marking the beginning of a head-to-head battle with Tamil Nadu's established political heavyweights.

CHENNAI: Award-winning Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu's recent reported remarks on 'Lord Ram' having "lost" his mind post his separation from Sita has stirred a controversy, with the BJP branding him a "fool." The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) condemned the remarks as "vulgar." The remarks were made at an event in the city recently, where Vairamuthu received an award named after Tamil poet Kamban, and in light of the killing of Vali. With the comments kicking up a row, Vairamuthu took to his social media page, claiming neither Valmiki forgave Lord Ram nor did Vali. The analogy refers to 'Lord Ram' killing Kishkinta King Vali during his duel with brother Sukreeva. To aid Sukreeva, 'Lord Ram' apparently targets Vali from behind, which some interpret as 'hiding' while releasing the arrow at Vali. Talking about this, Vairamuthu said he remarked that neither Valmiki, nor Vali forgave 'Lord Ram' for this incident, "nor was the world ready" to do so.
