Tamil Nadu govt forms three-member committee to oversee Periyar University operations
The decision was made after a special meeting of the university's syndicate committee, held in response to the leadership vacuum created by the end of Prof Jegannathan's extended term on May 19.
The newly-formed committee is headed by E Sundaravalli, director of Collegiate Education, who will function as the in-charge vice-chancellor. Prof Subramani, director of the Kalaignar Research Centre, and Dr Jayanthi, principal of Shakti Kailash Women's College, are part of the panel.
It may be noted that Prof Jegannathan had appointed Dr T Periasamy, head of the Tamil department as the in-charge V-C, without consulting the university syndicate a few days ago.

Actor-Politician Vijay Targets DMK, BJP Ahead Of Madurai Conference
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay has written a stirring letter to his party cadre, calling on them to prepare for the party's second state conference in Madurai on August 21. In his message, Vijay framed the event as a decisive step in TVK's mission to "fight and win against our political (DMK) and ideological (BJP) enemies" and to prove that the party is "the principal force in Tamil Nadu politics." The actor-politician, who has taken the political plunge at the peak of his film career, unlike other Tamil cinema icons after MG Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa, projects himself as a formidable challenger in the state's political landscape. While stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, and Kamal Haasan could not translate their popularity into electoral victory, Vijay is banking on his massive fan base and strategic grassroots mobilization to break the pattern. Vijay, however has not been critical of the AIADMK, triggering speculation that he could leave a window of opportunity open to join hands with the dravidian party closer to elections if there is a churn. At a recent meet launching the party's membership enrolment app, Vijay invoked the legacy of DMK Founder CN Annadurai. He urged his career to put to work Annadurai's grassroots connect philosophy of "go to people, live and learn from them and plan with them." He asked the TVK cadre to work tirelessly from village to village, street to street and house to house. The Madurai meet comes amid TVK's aggressive membership drive and Vijay's plans to tour the state extensively. Political observers say the conference could serve as a launchpad for TVK's full-scale campaign, marking the beginning of a head-to-head battle with Tamil Nadu's established political heavyweights.

Tamil lyrisict Vairamuthu's remarks on 'Lord Ram' stokes row, Sangh Parivar lashes out
CHENNAI: Award-winning Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu's recent reported remarks on 'Lord Ram' having "lost" his mind post his separation from Sita has stirred a controversy, with the BJP branding him a "fool." The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) condemned the remarks as "vulgar." The remarks were made at an event in the city recently, where Vairamuthu received an award named after Tamil poet Kamban, and in light of the killing of Vali. With the comments kicking up a row, Vairamuthu took to his social media page, claiming neither Valmiki forgave Lord Ram nor did Vali. The analogy refers to 'Lord Ram' killing Kishkinta King Vali during his duel with brother Sukreeva. To aid Sukreeva, 'Lord Ram' apparently targets Vali from behind, which some interpret as 'hiding' while releasing the arrow at Vali. Talking about this, Vairamuthu said he remarked that neither Valmiki, nor Vali forgave 'Lord Ram' for this incident, "nor was the world ready" to do so.

Synopsis Vairamuthu's recent remarks, suggesting Lord Ram was mentally unstable after separating from Sita, have ignited controversy. The Tamil lyricist's comments at a Kambar Kazhagam event drew criticism from the BJP, adding to his history of contentious religious statements. This incident follows past accusations and controversies surrounding Vairamuthu, including sexual harassment allegations. ANI Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu Renowned Tamil lyricist and poet Vairamuthu has sparked fresh controversy after claiming that Lord Ram was 'out of his mind' following his separation from wife at a recent Kambar Kazhagam event in Chennai, Vairamuthu referred to the episode in the Ramayana where Ram killed Vaali from hiding. 'Valmiki, Vaali, and the entire world did not forgive him, but poet Kamban (who translated the Ramayana into Tamil) did,' Vairamuthu said. 'Kamban reasoned that Ram was out of his mind due to his separation from Sita. As per IPC Section 84, a person who is out of his mind is not punishable. Kamban may not have known the law, but he understood society.'The comments drew sharp criticism from Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran, who called the statement 'anti-Hindu' and questioned why the ruling DMK, which claims to uphold secularism, did not denounce Vairamuthu's is not the first time Vairamuthu has been accused of making provocative religious remarks. Years earlier, he faced backlash for describing the Tamil saint-poet Andal as a 'devadasi.' Similarly, Tamil Nadu has witnessed previous controversies over Lord Ram, including former CM M. Karunanidhi's jibe during the Ram Sethu project debate, when he asked, 'In which engineering college did Ram study?'A towering figure in Tamil literature and cinema, Vairamuthu has had a career spanning over four decades. According to his Wikipedia page, he has penned more than 7,500 songs and poems for films, earning seven National Awards — the most by any Indian lyricist.
