A masterly synthesis of old & new: Review: Perth Festival, Ora Singers
St John's Kirk, Perth
The opening concert of this year's Perth Festival of the Arts was a festival debut for the Ora Singers, 18 unaccompanied voices under the direction of Suzi Digby, but the choir made such varied use of the fine acoustic of St John's Kirk they might have been based there.
The programme, which drew an excellent first night audience for this year's event, was the now-familiar mix of Renaissance polyphony and contemporary responses to such early music, framed by the Miserere settings of Allegri and Sir James MacMillan. The former began the programme in a transept of the building with most of the choir then processing around the audience while an unseen quartet of voices answered them.

That mirroring technique also ran through the programme, an Ave Marie by Victoria followed by Mark Simpson's, which is full of arresting chords and interesting rhythms and showcased the bedrock of lower male voices that is a real strength of this ensemble.
Among the more familiar Marian Latin words, two settings of the Song of Solomon's Sicut Lilium, from Renaissance France (Antoine Brumel) and by John Barber were more unusual offerings, and they were preceded by Francis Poulenc, whose voice was, as always, singularly distinctive.
Another outlier was the recent commission in the programme, An End Without End by Electra Perivolaris, who is based on the Isle of Arran and was mentored in Ayrshire by MacMillan. Her setting of 17th century Scots poet William Drummond was more fragmentary in style, using solo voices, duet, trio and quartet as well as larger ensemble.

Digby's direction of these details was light-touch, while she was very old-school in her conducting of works like Palestrina's Assumpta est Maria, which was all the better for her rigorous time-keeping. David Bednall's setting of the same text was another highlight, with ear-catching syncopations and a rich choral climax.
The MacMillan, however, could be the only choice to end the concert, its masterly synthesis of old and new in a class of its own, and the point at the evening when the six sopranos of the Ora Singers demonstrated a sectional solidity not always evident earlier.

Beyoncé at London Tottenham Hotspur Stadium: full list of banned items and the bag policy
If last year was the summer of the Eras tour, this summer is definitely for the Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. We are mere days away from Beyoncé's return to London for a whopping six nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Queen Bey last graced London stages in 2023 for her Renaissance tour, and Cowboy Carter is set to be just as big and just as glam, although quite a bit more country. We've already revealed our predicted setlist and the seating plan, but before you even get into the venue you'll need to get past security. 🪩 Time Out's full guide to Beyoncé at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 🎶 The ultimate guide to Beyoncé in London: Cowboy Carter Tour timings, dates, set list and everything you need to know. For obvious reasons, stadiums have pretty strict rules around bags and what you can have in them. Some stuff is common sense – best to leave your explosives and sharp objects at home – but what you might not know is that there is a specific size of bag you have stay within, sort of like boarding a plane except you won't get charged £80 if it's oversized, you'll just get turned away. Here's everything you need to know about Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium's bag policy to make sure your Cowboy Carter experience goes smoothly. What's the bag policy for the Cowboy Carter tour? Each person is allowed one small, personal bag, which must be A4 or smaller. Certain exemptions can be made for medical equipment, but you'll have to let the stadium know ahead of time by filling in their bag exemption form, which you can find here. Backpacks will likely be oversized. Instead, the venue recommends a clear carrier bag, a drawstring bag, or a laptop sleeve. On their website, Spurs do recommend their own club branded bags, but other brands are permitted too. You will also be allowed small clutches or handbags. The stadium states that 'all permissible bags will be carefully searched… those choosing to bring a bag to the stadium, which meets the above criteria, should be aware that they will be delayed whilst their bag is searched by our security team'. What size bag can I bring into the stadium? A4, the maximum size of bag you can bring to the concert, is 21cm long and 30cm high. Your bag has to be this size without being folded, and any bags which do not adhere to policy can be confiscated and not returned. Beyoncé Tottenham Hotspur Stadium banned items As we mentioned before, anything sharp or explosive is generally a no-go. That said, there are a few banned items you might not have considered. Here is a non-exhaustive list of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium's prohibited items: Bags which do not adhere to the specified Bag Policy (medical exemptions apply) High Visibility Clothing Bottles of any kind, glass vessels, cans, flasks Food Liquids of any kind (including water and alcohol. The stadium has multiple water fountains throughout) Laptop sleeves larger than 37cm x 31cm in size and any laptop bags Flares, smoke cannisters, air horns, laser devices Unlicensed musical instruments and other devices capable of causing a disturbance or nuisance Darts, frisbees (and similar items) Dangerous or hazardous items Illegal substances Fireworks, explosives or ammunition Knives, blades, firearms and weapons of any kind Scooters, skateboards and other skates Flags, Signs or banners that do not meet our Flag and Banner Policy Flagpoles greater than 1m in length Spray paint, large industrial style 'permanent' marker pens Transmitting devices Professional cameras (including cameras with interchangeable lenses) and recording devices Unauthorised fliers, illegal merchandise items, illegal charity collection utensils Motorbike helmets Animals (except service dogs and assistance dogs) Prams and pushchairs Umbrellas are allowed as long as they are smaller than 1m in length. As a general rule, if you have any doubt, air on the side of caution and leave it at home.

But the episode was recorded on May 5, the day before Archie's birthday. Meghan says in the podcast: "Where did the time go?" The pair spoke about Tina's first Headliners hair salon in Texas in 1990. The Duchess said: "I remember me with all my hair growing up, oh my gosh. "My mum would have to drop me off at the hair salon and I would sit there for three to four hours for them to press and curl my hair, and that was at the age of 13." Meghan also spoke about her A-list pal Tyler Perry, who offered the Sussexes a private refuge during their move to the US. It comes after the Duchess was spotted with Prince Harry at Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour at SoFi Stadium on May 9. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen dancing in a luxury suite worth thousands of dollars at the singer's Cowboy Carter tour in LA. Harry, 40, was standing and bopping his head awkwardly while the Duchess repeatedly threw her hands in the air as Beyonce belted out Texas Hold'Em. He wore a khaki hat, jacket and black T-shirt for the cowboy-themed show while Meghan, 43, wore a royal blue dress. A separate official photo posted on Beyonce's official tour website showed the couple smiling with their arms around each other. The Duchess of Sussex also went to Beyoncé's Renaissance tour in California in 2023 along with Harry, her mother Doria Ragland and Suits co-star Abigail Spencer. While Meghan and Doria could be seen beaming and raising their arms during the concert, an unsmiling Prince Harry had his arms stuffed in his pockets. Meghan first publicly met Beyoncé and Jay-Z in London in 2019. They met at the premiere of Disney's remake of The Lion King, in which the pop star was the voice of Nala. Meghan and Harry have crossed paths a number of times with Beyonce. In 2019, the singer received a Brit Award standing in front of a regal portrait of the Duchess of Sussex wearing a crown and jewels. Beyonce and Jay-Z explained the decision, saying: 'In honour of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.' Meghan's makeup artist Daniel Martin revealed how she responded to the news, when he appeared on CBS News. He recalled: 'I sent her a pic. I think it was a screen grab of the two of them in front of the portrait. 'I think all I wrote was, 'Girl.' She wrote me back like the big eye emoji.' Meanwhile, Beyonce previously praised Meghan after her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, which blasted 'racist' Britain, the Royal Family and the press, while highlighting Meghan's mental health struggles. Beyonce wrote on her website: 'Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership. We are all strengthened and inspired by you.'
