Elevated corridor above Inner Ring Road on the cards to decongest Delhi: Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the key aim is to decongest traffic jams and provide a smooth vehicular movement along one of Delhi's busiest arterial roads.
A meeting in this regard was held last week, where the minister directed the department to appoint a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
'Looking at the increasing traffic load on the Ring Road, we plan to construct this elevated corridor over the existing road. Some parcels of land will be acquired, and ramps and loops will be built to connect the elevated road with arterial routes,' said the minister.
Officials said that the inner ring road is 55 km long, starting from Shalimar Bagh in North Delhi to Azadpur. This is a vital commuter link that witnesses severe congestion during peak hours. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to span around 80 kilometres when ramps, loops, and additional connecting roads are included, offering improved connectivity and easing traffic flow at several known bottlenecks, said officials.
PWD officials have also been instructed to expedite the consultant selection process to evaluate the technical and feasibility aspects of the project.
'Once the DPR is completed, the department will move toward execution, subject to approvals and funding,' said the minister.
The initiative forms part of the Delhi government's broader plan to address persistent traffic snarls at multiple choke points across the capital, many of which are located along the Ring Road corridor.
'An expert committee formed earlier to examine traffic issues across the city is scheduled to meet this week to review the corridor proposal and suggest further steps. This project is a step toward a long-term solution for Delhi's traffic woes,' officials said.

CM: Submit revised estimated cost for Barapullah elevated road project
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta has asked the public works department to submit the revised estimated cost for the Barapullah elevated road project to get it approved by lieutenant governor VK Saxena. The department has already spent nearly Rs 1,239 crore on the project against the sanctioned amount of Rs 1,260 crore, while a portion of the road measuring 690 metres is yet to be built. The overall cost of the 3.5-km road, connecting Sarai Kale Khan in the west of the Yamuna with Mayur Vihar in the east, is expected to exceed the sanctioned amount. The additional chief secretary of the finance department observed at the meeting of the expenditure and finance committee last week that approval was being sought only for the arbitration award of Rs 175 crore, due to the delay in completing the project. Though the elevated road was to be completed by Oct 17, 2017, the project was delayed because govt failed to acquire a portion of land owned by private individuals. The case went into arbitration, leading to an award of Rs 120 crore in favour of the contractor. The amount eventually increased to Rs 175 crore, with interest and goods and services tax added to it. To enforce the award, the contractor filed a petition in Delhi High Court . Following the court's directions, PWD paid an amount of Rs 170 crore to the contractor. Gupta has asked the department to seek legal opinion on whether the arbitration order can be challenged now. The committee also deliberated that an inquiry was needed to ascertain the loss to the govt exchequer due to payment of arbitration awards without seeking the opinion of the law department and fixing responsibility for the erring officials. The chief minister last week ordered an inquiry by the anti-corruption branch for approval and acceptance of arbitration awards by authorities "not competent to accept" and delay in execution of the project.

Goa govt absorbed expenditure of Rs 65cr under zero water bill scheme
Porvorim: During the period for which the PWD implemented the Zero Water Bill Scheme, from Sep 1, 2021, to April 30, 2025, it issued 41.9 lakh zero bills to domestic consumers. The total bill amount of Rs 65.5 crore was waived under the scheme, stated the reply tabled in the assembly by chief minister Pramod Sawant to a question by Velim MLA Cruz Silva. Goa govt officially ended its zero-bill scheme on May 1. The scheme allowed the drinking water bill to be waived for families who limited their usage to less than 16,000 litres of water per month. The idea behind the scheme was to encourage the judicious use of drinking water resources. However, the CM said that earlier this year, the scheme of free water to consumers had to be stopped due to the misuse of water to wash cars or sustain gardens. He said govt is already supplying treated water to consumers by bearing a loss of Rs 16 per litre. Sawant said that the total water demand for domestic, commercial, and industrial uses is 695MLD — with system losses being factored in. The CM told the House that the highest demand for water at 146.5MLD is in Salcete taluka, followed by 123MLD in Bardez, and 94MLD in Tiswadi. The CM said these problems are attended to within the shortest possible time. 'In such eventualities, tanker supply is resorted to as a short-term measure. However, as a long-term measure, govt is investing in upgrading and modernising water treatment facilities, distribution networks, and storage systems,' he said.
