Wrexham AFC's Kerry Evans releases book about her life

Leader Live28-06-2025
Many people will recognise Kerry Evans from the hugely-successful Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
She has been the Disability Liaison Officer at Wrexham AFC for over a decade by now and has become a powerful force for change through that role.
So much so, that a book all about her journey so far in life has been published.
Kerry's autobiography 'Stronger Than You Think' will be available to buy from Amazon as of August 12.
From surviving a near-fatal brain bleed to creating accessible spaces for fans and helping to transform the club she loves, Kerry's journey shows us that no matter what life throws our way, we are all stronger than we think.
Speaking to The Leader, she says that conversations with her late nan and Wrexham AFC co-chairman Rob McElhenney ultimately convinced her to put her life onto pages.
Kerry said: "The book came about as my late Nan used to say if I ever wrote a book no one would ever believe it to be true, because so much has happened in my life.
"Then, at the first promotion from the National league I chatted to Rob McElhenny and said all I want to do in my role is inspire people and his reply was that I inspire hundreds of people including him.
"Which then got me thinking if it was possible to write a book then my job would be fulfilled if just one person felt they too could achieve from being inspired by my story."

Kerry added: "It then grew from there. I am so immensely proud now having it completed and seeing the front cover was a real wow moment, making it feel very real.
"It's been a very long hard journey at times, but I really want to hopefully leave people with the belief, if I've been able to achieve, they too can achieve."
The summary of Kerry's autobiography, published by BiteBack Publishing, reads; "Born with cerebral palsy, something she worked hard to overcome and forge ahead with her life, Kerry then suffered a bleed on the brain, which left her with no feeling on the right side nor the ability to walk.
"Such a setback could have destroyed her. Initially, she lost confidence and felt worthless. But then Wrexham Football Club came into her life, and she was transformed. And then Hollywood came calling.
TOP STORIES
"As disability liaison officer at Wrexham, Kerry was one of only six staff members who worked at the club prior to the Hollywood takeover and is therefore uniquely qualified to speak about how life at the club has changed.
"She has witnessed at first hand the incredible story of how two Hollywood stars fell in love with a small football club in north Wales and transformed not only the fortunes of the team but also those of the community surrounding it.
"But this is not just the story of the Hollywood takeover at Wrexham – this is the story of how one woman's indomitable spirit enabled her to overcome adversity and spend her life helping others."

Michelle Yeoh sees ‘Ne Zha 2' movie as homage to Chinese mythology

LOS ANGELES, Aug 20 (Reuters) - For Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh, it is time for Hollywood to focus more on Asian mythological characters like the ones showcased in the Chinese film 'Ne Zha 2,' which has become the highest-grossing animated film in history worldwide. "They're warriors and demigods,' Yeoh, who voices the role of Ne Zha's mom for the film's English dub, told Reuters. 'I guess it's like Zeus, you know, and Thor, but these are ours. And I think that's very important because when you learn about another culture's myths, you have a nice, deeper understanding, and it teaches you to embrace something that is different,' the 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' actor added. 'Ne Zha 2," distributed by A24, follows the events of the first film, 1999's "Ne Zha." In the new film, the souls of Nezha and Aobing work to regain their physical bodies and protect their families. The original film grossed over $700 million worldwide. The English dubbed version of the fantasy film directed by Yu Yang and based on Xu Zhonglin's 16th-century novel called 'Investiture of the Gods,' arrives in U.S. theaters on Friday. The sequel, originally in Mandarin, made waves when it overtook Pixar's "Inside Out 2" in February to become the highest-grossing animated film globally in history, according to data from ticketing platform Maoyan. "Ne Zha 2" has amassed a total box office of 12.3 billion yuan ($1.69 billion) including pre-sales and overseas earnings, making it the eighth highest grossing box office film globally in history. While Yeoh emphasizes the cultural richness of the film, she wants audiences of all walks of life to understand that the most important thing is that it's 'a beautiful story.' 'I think we should stop seeing it as, 'Oh it's a Chinese film,'' she added. The 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actor recalled watching the movie for the first time and not being able to tear her eyes away from the screen. 'You're going up to the heavens. You're going down to the bottom of the seas. You see the dragons. You see all these kind of things, and just for that two hours - be transported,' Yeoh said.

How Disney actor Alyson Stoner survived stalkers, starvation and sexualisation after revealing horrifying rape by 'well-adored colleague'

Alyson Stoner has revealed the sexualisation they received as a child star, as well as starvation and a foiled kidnap plot in their new memoir after sharing their horrific rape ordeal. The Disney star, now 32, who came out as queer in 2018 and uses they/them pronouns, shot to fame when they were just six years old. Alyson is known for their roles in beloved family movie Franchise Cheaper By The Dozen, as well as Camp Rock, the Step Up movies and cameos across other Disney programmes. However, behind the screens, Alyson encountered situations no child should ever, including rape, sexualisation and stalkers, which has been recounted in their new memoir Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything. With them becoming a household names thanks to their nostalgic roles, it resulted in Alyson falling victim to a horrific kidnap plot, The Guardian reports. Their team had sent them out to meet what they thought was a terminally ill fan in a touching gesture, however, it soon became apparent it was a foiled plot to abduct the actor. When it came to grueling auditions, by the time Alyson hit puberty, they realised how they were being sexualised when meeting top executives. Stoner explains: 'For a young female body in particular, what I noticed was this sudden expectation that you will know how to sexualise your portrayals. 'That was just such a bizarre and horrific experience, to be in room after room with adult casting directors, knowing that I, at 13 or 14, am expected to seduce them.' Throughout their childhood in the limelight, they revealed how those around them insisted they stay shaded from the sun, avoid their pale skin 'getting darker'. However, Hollywood's obsession with the 'perfect' body image eventually took its toll on Alyson in their mid-teens as they hit breaking point. The actor revealed how they undertook a punishing intense workout regime, coupled with a strict calorie deficit which eventually led to their menstrual cycle stopping at 17. It was then that Alyson sought professional help, however, those around them advised them not to enter rehab as they reminded them of their rapidly expiration as a child star in the industry. 'I knew I needed to hit certain milestones by 18 to be able to transition successfully into adulthood in entertainment, and I was creeping up on that date,' they said. It comes after they shared how they went to a 'weight loss camp' for a role in the Hunger Games that Jennifer Lawrence eventually bagged. Opening up about the rejection from auditions or shows that never made it to air, Alyson penned: 'When you are the product, it's like, well, what's wrong with me? It had a deep impact on my self-esteem. 'The rejection hurt terribly, but then when I became chosen, my self-esteem was still tied up with that. Either way, you're not cultivating a core sense of worth. It's tied to so many things beyond your control. 'The unique aspect of [the entertainment industry] is that this is a daily experience that a child is going through, while disrupting every other area of their health and development along the way.' Alyson also recounted in her book how they were raped after a wellness event by a man who was allegedly 'well-adored in the community.' 'The world blurred as my mind completely disconnected from my body,' Stoner, who starred alongside Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato in the Camp Rock film franchise, wrote in their memoir, per Us Weekly. 'The last image I saw was a poster on the wall of a ravenous feline leaping for its prey. Then I blacked out and he raped me.' During that time, Stoner had taken a hiatus from acting and was transitioning away from content creation. The former child star had started working towards becoming a full-time mental health professional and advocate for current child actors and influencers. The Disney alum said the alleged sexual assault occurred after they ran into the colleague at an unnamed wellness event. The two allegedly ended up alone together after Stoner accepted the colleague's invitation to learn more about his products. Stoner did not reveal their alleged attacker's name in their memoir before detailing how he allegedly treated them like 'an inanimate object.' 'He opened the door to a room on the first floor of an apartment building,' they wrote before remembering the thought that crossed their mind at the time. 'Is this his lab or his residence? It was common for entrepreneurs and creatives to have live-work spaces, but this looked nothing like the setup from the photos he showed me.' Alyson still works as an actor now, and recently returned to Disney animated series Phineas and Ferb following its reboot by the media giant.
